John H. “Jack” Fugeman
Jack Fugeman, 95, of Ashland, passed away Jan. 13, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center after a hospital stay for a fall.
Jack was born, raised and lived in Ashland his entire life except for his time in the U.S. 9th Army during World War II. He entered Europe on Utah beach weeks after D-Day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He played football for the Tomcats and graduated from Ashland High School in 1932. He traveled to all 120 Kentucky counties, all 50 states and six continents and was always ready for the next adventure with family or friends.
Jack and his sister owned and operated Ashland Sales Hardware on Greenup Avenue. He worked at Patton Lumber for 30 years before he became part owner of the lumber yard. Jack then became president and CEO of Catlettsburg Federal Savings & Loan until 1990, when he served as board chairman until the merger with Peoples Bank Corp.
During his life and career in Ashland, Jack served on the board of the Ashland City Pool. He was a Knights of Columbus 4th degree and a member of Toastmasters Inc., the Eagles club, the Elks lodge, United Way of Boyd County and the Rotary club. He was a life member of the VFW and Forty & Eight-Voiture National. Jack was very active in the American Legion and was a life member of Clarence Fields Post 76, post commander, Kentucky Department commander and a regional representative.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Inez Henderschot Fugeman; his siblings, Francis Frank Hendershot, Andrew Michael, Emily Katherine (Nolte) and William Leonard. He was married for 39 years to Bernice (Keys) Fugeman, who died in 1983.
He is survived by his son, Patrick, and his wife, Marianne, of Hockessin, Del.; his granddaughter, Heidi Fugeman Lindelof, and her husband, Damon; his great-grandson, Van Holden of Studio City, Calif.; his grandson, Jordan Patrick, who attends RIT University; and his special companion, Garnet Damico of Ashland.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22 at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at Holy Family Church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
A luncheon will be at the American Legion hall on 20th Street.

Harry Truman Fuller (1948-2010)
Harry T. Fuller, 61, of 104051/2 Mayo Trail, Catlettsburg, Ky., passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Fuller was born Dec. 7, 1948, in Ironton, Ohio, son of the late Andrew Jackson and Clara Fannin Fuller.
Harry was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post 93 in Kenova, W.Va.
He loved playing bingo and scrapping metal.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews whom he often talked about as well as a vast number of friends, especially, Jesse Silver, with whom he lived for many years.
As well as his parents, Harry is preceded by eight brothers, Andrew Fuller Jr., Ray Fuller, Robert C. Fuller and Robert E. Fuller, who died in infancy, Jay Fuller, Teddy “Nick” Fuller, Roy Fuller and William “Bill” Fuller; and a sister, Louise Fuller Branham.
Mr. Fuller donated his body to the Marshall University School of Medicine for medical research.
A memorial visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 at Potter’s House of Worship, 6417 U.S. 60, Ashland, Ky.

Charles Hampton (1923-2010)
Charles W. Hampton, 86, of Catlettsburg, Ky., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, in Carter County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Wade and Ada Howard Hampton. Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as an automobile body repairman, owning and operating Charlie’s Body Shop until his retirement in 1995. He attended 13th Street Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a son, David Allen Hampton; and brothers Tebe Hampton, John Hampton, Tillon Hampton, Edward Hampton and Orville Hampton.
His survivors include his wife of 61 years, Wilma Bowling Hampton of Catlettsburg; two daughters, Judy (David) Lauhon of Catlettsburg and Karen (Jim) Smallwood of Argillite; three sisters, Ruby McGee of Harrisburg, Pa., Agnes Edgerton, of Spring Hill, Fla., and Betty Scarberry of Orlando, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Irene Hampton of Staffordsville, Ky.; a brother, Raymond (Olive) Hampton of Wyandotte, Mich.; five grandchildren, Micah (Dawna) Lauhon and Leah Lauhon, both of Catlettsburg, Annie Smallwood of Argillite, James (Kelly) Smallwood of Washington Court House, Ohio, and Kelly (Brandon) Starling of Sacramento, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren, Haleigh, Hannah and Hope Smallwood and Ryan Starling and Kirstie Boyd.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg by Pastor Bill Parker. Burial will be in Bowling Cemetery on Whites Creek in Catlettsburg.

Eileen McCain Adams (1946-2010)
Eileen McCain Adams, 63, of Charlotte, N.C., died Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at her residence.
Services will be private.
She was born Dec. 15, 1946, in Portsmouth, Ohio, a daughter of the late Everett and Kathleen Storck McCain. Eileen was a 1964 graduate of Russell High School and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was an American Red Cross donor and had previously been employed with Sunbank Trust for 28 years.
In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar.
She is survived by four sisters, Sara (Jim) Prince, Jenelda (Rich) Frantz, Barbara Klaiber and Kay Hampton, and a brother, David (June) McCain. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

John David Young (1947-2010)
John David Young, 62, of Worthington, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Young was born Oct. 4, 1947, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Wilford and Olive Savage Young. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Rider.
He retired from the C&O; Railroad after 20 years as an engineer. He was a member of the locomotive and engineers union, Ashland American Legion Post 76 and the Hobo Club Ludlow Bronley in Covington, Ky. He was a United States Army veteran and a Kentucky colonel.
Surviving are two sisters, Connie Helton and Joyce Bailey, both of Worthington; a granddaughter; and six nieces and nephews.

Vincent Ray Kimmel (1964-2010)
Vincent Ray Kimmel, 45, of Grayson, Ky., passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in Sunset Nursing Center in Coal Grove, Ohio.
Mr. Kimmel was born June 29, 1964, in Morehead, Ky., to the late Larry Clay Kimmel Sr. and Anna Lois Morrison-Kimmel. He worked most recently as a welder in the construction industry.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his mother, Anna Lois Morrison-Kimmel; a daughter, Cristina Horne, and a son, Jerry Kimmel, both of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Jacob Scott Horne, Zachary Ryan Horne, Dakota Wayne Kimmel and Jonathan Kimmel, all of Dayton; two brothers, Larry Kimmel Jr. and David A. Kimmel, both of Grayson; two sisters, Joann Stevens and Anita Kimmel, both of Grayson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends who will all miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 21, 2010, at Reedville Christian Baptist Church in Reedville, Ky., with words of comfort and encouragement by Pastor Bryan Whitt.

Robert “Paul” Underwood (1940-2010)
Robert “Paul” Underwood, 69, of Grayson, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, in Grayson.
He was born Aug. 29, 1940, in Carter County, a son of the late John Edward and Lula Jane Wilburn Underwood.
He was the owner of H&U; Horizontal Boring for 30 Years, the owner of Grayson Speed and Custom Shop, a retired construction worker and a member of Iron Hill Church of Christ.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Underwood was preceded in death by a son, Robert Mitchell Underwood; a grandson, Mitchell Paul Underwood; and an infant brother, Finley Earl Underwood.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn Sue Bond Underwood; a son, John Edward (Michelle) Underwood of Olive Hill; a daughter-in-law, Jean Ann Underwood Rose of Greenup; a grandson, Jonathan Michael of Olive Hill; four granddaughters, Samantha Sue and Brittney Renee, both of Greenup, and KaLeigh Michelle and Danielle Renee, both of Olive Hill; two brothers, Donald (Shirley) Underwood and Burl (Norma Jean) Underwood, all of Grayson; two sisters, Faye (Tim) Coleman of Grayson and Janet Renee (Eldie) Montgomery of Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Tim Stamper and Ryan Duncan. Burial will be in Boone-Grassy Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Kelsey, John Brooks, Don Underwood, Burl Underwood, Vincent Arnett and Tim Coleman.

Loretta Christine Kitchen Johnston (1938-2009)
Loretta Christine Kitchen Johnston, 71, of Grayson, went home to be the Lord on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in the Cleveland Clinic, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born May 18, 1938, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Orville and Hattie Huffman Kitchen.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Carl R. Johnston, in January 2005.
Loretta is survived by her children — daughters Carletta (Ronnie) Rose of Grayson and Lynne Jarvis of Summit; sons Steve Johnston and Shannon (Andrea) Johnston of Grayson; four grandchildren, Kim Rose and Ronnie R. (Regina) Rose, all of Grayson, and Laney (Scott) Jarvis McDowell and Kati Jarvis, both of Ashland; and four great-grandchildren, Marissia and Robbie Shaffer, Trent Rose and Chloe Riggs, all of Grayson.
Loretta will always be remembered by those who knew her best for her quick wit and wonderful, caring heart as she always tried to help those in need. She was former owner of the Shangri-La Restaurant in Grayson, where she served everything homemade with a smile and a sense of humor. She loved to garden, quilt and chat with all her many friends and pen pals. Her happiest moments were when she could fix big meals for her friends and family.
Loretta was a member of Oak Grove Church of Christ.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by pastors Tim Carper and Terry Harris. Burial will be in Kiser-McGinnis Cemetery.

Elizabeth Toro Hernandez Crabtree (1959-2009)
Elizabeth was a brave woman with relentless strength and courage, who battled cancer during the last three years of her life. She is now in a very safe place, Jehovah’s memory, awaiting the resurrection.
Elizabeth, a devoted Jehovah’s Witness, left Miami, Fla., and came to the Kentucky/Tri-State area 16 years ago to share the Truth with others. She and her husband, Mark Crabtree, helped organize various Spanish Congregation in efforts to bring the Spanish speaking communities an opportunity to establish a relationship with our Lord Jehovah.
Elizabeth was born Jan. 21, 1959, in New York City, and died Dec. 28, 2009.
She was the eldest child of Puerto Rican parents raised in Spanish Harlem and later moved to Bridgeport, Conn., where she met her first husband, the father of both of her children.
Elizabeth loved nature and preferred outdoor hobbies such as camping, hiking and fishing. She was a woman of strong character, afraid of few things and with a heart of gold. Many knew she would do anything to help out a family member or friend. Known by her family as Chinita, Elizabeth cared, protected and guided her younger sister loyally. She was a helpful caring daughter as well as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and cousin.
Elizabeth is held dearly in all our hearts. Happy birthday, Mamita. We love you!
Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 18 years and soul mate, Mark Crabtree; a mother who will cherish her memories always, Josefina Olmeda; two loving and dedicated sons who stood by her side at all times, David and Elion Hernandez; three caring stepchildren, Mark Alfred Ken Crabtree, Mari Anne Crabtree and Melissa Ai Maslak; three beautiful grandchildren who will remember her loving ways, Gavin Austin H. Smith, Ivany Virginia and Jonathan Hernandez; her sister and brother-in-law who will never forget her, Rosie Rivera-Aguiar and Manuel Aguiar; and three nieces and nephews who knew and loved her as Titi Bill, Ilaza, Ava and Matthew Aguiar.
Gary Charles Adams (1984-2010)
Gary Charles Adams, 25, of Waterloo, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010.
Gary Charles was born on Feb. 15, 1984, the youngest son of Faith Miller Adams of Waterloo and Darrell Adams of Ironton, Ohio.
He attended Symmes Valley High School, where he was an active FFA member, a 4-H member, a member of the Junior Fair Board and a member of the Viking football team. After graduating high school in 2002, Gary continued to donate his time to the football team for seven years. Gary also was the videographer for both the football and basketball teams.
Gary attended Shawnee State University, where he studied computer science and fine arts. Gary Charles was a proud employee of Marathon Petroleum Co., where he became a U.S. Coast Guard-certified tankerman. He was a lifelong member of McDaniels Crossroads Church.
Gary Charles had a special gift of making friends wherever he went, and he loved them all. Gary Charles was preceded in death by his grandfather and namesake, Gary Elden Miller; his grandmother, Bertha Adams; his great-grandparents, Jake Miller and Martha Meek; and his great-great-grandparents, Mart and Belva Miller.

Linda Kay Blevins See, 60, of Kenova, W.Va., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, in Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.
Mrs. See was born June 23, 1949, in Ironton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Charles Sidney “Sid” and Ida Lou Lowe Blevins.
Linda was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved sports and was a devoted Lawrence County football and basketball fan. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, and First Baptist Church in Raceland, Ky., and was a Raceland High School graduate.
Surviving are her loving husband of 44 years, Arlie Joe See; a daughter and her husband, Michele and David Combs of Louisa, Ky.; a grandson who was her pride and joy, Tyler Combs; a sister, Marilyn (Mike) Gumbert of Raceland; two brothers, Jerry M. “Sid” Blevins and the Rev. Charles W. (Regina) Blevins, both of Raceland; her mother-in-law, Nora See of Flatwoods, Ky.; her sister-in-law, Suzie (Roy) Fields of Flatwoods, Ky.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of other family and friends who loved and will miss her.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods by Brother Charles Murphy from Heritage Baptist Church in Houston.
