John David Wilburn 1943-2012

ASHLAND — John David Wilburn, 69, of Ashland, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 13, 1943, at Fultz in Carter County, a son of the late Lymon and Mary Riggs Wilburn.

John was a retired Army veteran of 21 years, serving three years in Vietnam as a combat medic. He was a physician assistant with an associate degree from Baylor University. He retired from the VA Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C., treating veterans with post traumatic stress disorder from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. He was an avid sports fan and a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Glen Elwood Wilburn and Lymon “Punky” Wilburn Jr.

His survivors include his wife of more than 42 years, Sharon Kiser Wilburn of Ashland; a daughter, Johna (Mike) Vertrees of Elizabethtown; a son, Greg Wilburn of Louisville; two sisters, Suzanne Whitt of Huber Heights, Ohio, and Margret Nolen of Grayson; a brother, James Paul Wilburn of Grayson; two grandchildren, DeAndra (Dwight) Mills and Michael Vertrees; a great-grandson, Evan Robert Mills; his constant companions, Sophie and Wendy; and numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.

 The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by the Rev. Mark Kloha, minister. Burial with military honors will be in Ison Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 6 and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1320 Bath Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
