Gladys Hannah Bryson - 1918-2012

SOUTH SHORE — Gladys Irene Hannah Bryson, 93, of South Shore, died Thursday, July 26, 2012 at home.

Mrs. Bryson was born Dec. 27, 1918, in Maloneton, where she lived the first 30 years of her life, a daughter of the late Charles Gabriel and Effie Nickells Hannah.

She was the owner-operator of A.H. Bryson & Sons General Store on Schultz Creek Road in South Shore. She and her husband James E. Bryson, the second-generation owner of the business, had operated the store together from 1960 until his death on March 13, 2002. From that date until being struck suddenly ill on June 24, 2012, she managed the day-to-day operations six days per week and was the primary cashier at the business. Mrs. Bryson was also the last postmaster of the old Letitia Post Office, serving in an interim capacity before the USPS discontinued it in 1969. As a 63-year resident of Schultz Creek, she loved its natural features and was passionate about its flowers and birds. She was a former Selby Shoe Factory employee, a gifted seamstress, and a 4-H sewing leader. She was a long-time member of the Allen Chapel Church of Christ and the Ladies Sunday School class there.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and one sister, Raymond Hannah, Earl Hannah, Ernest Hannah, Taft Hannah, Bill Hannah, Freda Hannah Collins, Ralph Curtis Hannah, Robert Hannah, Roy Hannah, and Elbert Hannah.

Surviving are her three children, Robert (Linda) Bryson of South Shore, Betty (Tom) Carr of Indianapolis, Ind., and Bonnie Bryson of South Shore; four grandchildren, Joe Bryson of South Shore, Sarah (Justin) Bryson Brashear of Portsmouth, Ohio, and Hannah and Rebecca Carr of Charlotte, N.C.; and one great-grandchild, Chloe Brashear.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore with Harold Dupuy officiating. Burial will be in Bryson Cemetery on Schultz Creek Road in South Shore.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
