Atha Juanita Riffe - 1924-2012

IRONTON — Atha Juanita Riffe, 88, formerly of Ironton, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, in Johnson City, Tenn.

The Kenova, W.Va., native was born July 1, 1924, the daughter of the late Alpha and Lorena Boggs Gilllenwater.

She was the widow of George Washington “Honeyboy” Riffe whom she married Aug. 28, 1955.

Atha attended Ironton City Schools and was a homemaker. She was a former volunteer at the Lawrence County Senior Citizen Center, was of the Pentecostal faith and had lived in the Ironton area most of her life.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Blain Franklin Gillenwater, Joseph Chester Gillenwater, Floyd Troy Gillenwater and Arnold Eugene Gillenwater; two sisters, Lora Ferrell and Virginia Ann Gillenwater; and one grandson.

Atha is survived by three sons, George F. Riffe of Tucson, Ariz., Willard Earl Riffe of Johnson City, Tenn., and Patton Franklin Riffe of Melbourne, Fla.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nieces, Vickie Hastings and Melody Schultz, both of Washington Court House and Ruth Ann Lewis of Xenia; and three nephews, Arnold Eugene Gillenwater Jr., Steve Gillenwater and Jeff Gillenwater, all of Washington Court House.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 28, 2012, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. 7th St., Ironton, OH 45638 with Brother Charles Langdon officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Ironton.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.
