Phyllis Lynn Spurr, DO

FLATWOODS — Dr. Spurr, 53, of Flatwoods, formerly of Carrollton, died in  Ashland Community Hospice on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, after a lengthy illness.  

Dr. Spurr was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Germany for most of her enlisted time. She achieved the rank of sergeant and was a Russian linguist specialist. She was present when the Berlin Wall was demolished.  

She graduated from Carroll County High School in 1977 and graduated from NKU in 2004 with a bachelor of science in microbiology, biology and psychology. She then graduated from Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009, with her doctorate degree and worked at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Eileen Rowelett Spurr Moore and Jerry Moore; two brothers, Michael Spurr (Donna) and Archie Brian Spurr (Patti); and a sister, Susan Spurr Clark; as well as a loving caregiver, Kimberly Martin of Flatwoods. She is also survived by four nephews and one niece,  Benjamin Spurr (Heather), Michael Spurr (Patricia), Stephen Spurr and Tommy Spurr, all of Carrollton, and Sara Spurr Frey (Matt) of New York. She is also survived by a step-niece, Mary Elizabeth Yantz of Bedford. Also surviving are three uncles, Gary Rowelett (Margaret Ann) and Dennis Rowelett of Madison, Ind., and Tommy Spurr (Teresa) of Milton, Ky.; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Archie Spurr, as well as her grandparents and an infant niece.  

She loved to act in plays, loved to sing, dance, sew, read and travel. She loved and lived life to it’s fullest every day. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.  

A memorial service will be at a later date in Carrollton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Foundation, Saint Christopher Drive, Ashland, KY 41101.

Steen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
