Robert L. Coburn - 1926-2013

ASHLAND — Robert L. Coburn, 86, of Ashland, passed away Feb. 18, 2013, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility in Ashland.  

He was born July 10, 1926, to the late Homer and Gladys Ramey Coburn.  

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Marilee Moloney Coburn.

Bob graduated from Ashland High School in 1944 and was a U.S. Navy veteran who served on the USS Antietam in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1950. He was a retired teacher, coach and athletic director in the Ashland Independent School District for 28 years. He was a longtime member of Unity Baptist Church and Poage Lodge 325, F&AM, and also a member of the El Hasa Shrine, Scottish Rite and American Legion. He was a Kentucky colonel. His hobbies included travel, fishing, hunting and spending the winters in Florida. He was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and the University of Kentucky. By age 17 (1943) he had  traveled to all 48 states.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline A. Coburn of Ashland; a son, Robert L. Coburn II (Julie) of Ashland; a daughter, Gwendolyn Robertson (Larry) of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; stepdaughters Debbie Taylor (Gary) of Ashland and Karen Crawford (Brent) of Ashland; a stepson, Chuck Anderson (Tammy) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Floyd Paris. Masonic rites will be presented by Poage Lodge 325, F&AM.  

Visitation will be after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
