James Thompson (1921-2009)

James R. Thompson Jr., 88, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio.

Mr. Thompson was born April 4, 1921, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late James R. Thompson Sr. and Sarah Maddox Thompson. He served faithfully with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a foundry worker with Armco Steel.

Surviving are his loving wife of many years, Rebecca Wheeler Thompson; a sister, Jenny Ellison of South Point, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews, all to remember him fondly and miss him greatly.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Howard Thompson and John Thompson, and a sister, Beatrice Prince.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland, Ky., by Pastor Mike Blankenship.

Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg is in charge of arrangements.



Jack Christian (1934-2009)

Jack H. Christian, 75, of Raceland, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.

He was born Aug. 16, 1934, in Ashland, Ky., the son of the late James H. and Mary Frances Skeens Christian. He was a retired furniture shop foreman for the Federal Correctional Institution and a peacetime Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Myrna Gail McAllister Christian; and six brothers, Robert Christian, William Christian, Edward Christian, Milton Christian, Charles Christian and Glenn Christian.

He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Christian of Raceland; three sons, Mitch Christian and his wife, Debbie, of Ashland, Brian Christian of Raceland and Gordon Christian and his wife, Joan, of Worthington, Ky; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Christian and his wife, Ashley, Ayla Christian, Casey Christian, Carson Christian, Reagan Christian, April Christian and Darrell Christian; and a great grandchild, Lucius Christian.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Mike Rice. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave. Ashland, KY 41101 or a charity of choice.



Laura Haupt (1914-2009)

Laura Belle Harper Maddix Haupt of Hampton, Va., formerly of Ashland, died Monday.

Mrs. Haupt was born April 19, 1914, in Grahn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry H. Haupt.

A celebration of life will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton. Friends may call until 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Miller Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

Christine Turner (1925-2009)

Christine Francis Turner of Ashland died Sunday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Mrs. Turner was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Johnson County. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Albert Turner.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and until services Thursday at the funeral home.



Harold Penix

Harold W. Penix, 81, of Wurtland, died Tuesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Sally Roop (1922-2009)

Sally Nichols Gearhart Roop, 87, of Mansfield, Ohio, formerly of Olive Hill, died Saturday in Hospice House in Ashland, Ohio.

Mrs. Roop was born March 13, 1922, in Carter County.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.

Friends may call at the funeral home.

James Valandingham (1940-2009)

James Earl “Jimmy” Valandingham, 69, of Troy, Ohio, formerly of Olive Hill, died Saturday in Upper Valley Medical Center in Piqua, Ohio.

Mr. Valandingham was born March 6, 1940, in Carter County.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Carter County.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until services Thursday at the funeral home.

Tobe Lawson

Tobe Lawson, 69, of Garrett, died Monday in St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Lawson Cemetery in Langley.



Lillie Hensley

Lillie Bell Howes Hensley, 97, of Salyersville, died Monday.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville.

Milton Simmons

Milton Simmons, 79, of Sandy Hook, died Monday at his residence.

His wife, Susie Justice Simmons, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Elliott County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.



Floyd Case Jr. (1922-2009)

Floyd Case Jr., 86, of South Point, died Monday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

He was born Sept. 17, 1922, in Ironton.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Woodland Cemetery in Ironton. There will be no visitation.

Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Wilson (1948-2009)

Sarah M. Wilson, 60, of Ironton, died Saturday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

She was born Nov. 12, 1948.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Lawrence Furnace Cemetery.
