Laura B. Harper (Maddix) Haupt (1914-2009)
Laura B. Harper (Maddix) Haupt, a Hampton, Va., resident since 1995, formerly of Ashland, Ky., died on Monday, Sept. 14, 2009.
Mrs. Haupt was born April 19, 1914, in Grahn, Ky., the daughter of the late William Harper and Amanda Edna Binion Harper Maddix. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry H. Haupt; a stepson, Raymond Haupt; a stepdaughter, Vivian Heckert; her stepfather, Fred D. Maddix Sr.; two sisters, Tewatha M. (Tommie) Colley and Hazel M. Topping; and four brothers, Julius Clifford Maddix, Fred B. (Buddy-Sereek) Maddix Jr., William T. Maddix and James F. (Jack) Maddix.
Her survivors include two sisters, Geneva Christene Forrest of Poquoson, Va., and Mary E. (Libby) Kazarnowicz of Hampton; several stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to her caregiver, Mrs. Terri Brown, for her years of devoted and special care.
Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland by the Rev. Randy Skaggs.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice.

Iser W. “Windy” Blevins (1943-2009)
Iser Winfield “Windy” Blevins, 66, of Ashland. Ky., husband of Judy Harper Blevins, died Thursday morning, Sept. 17, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland following an extended illness.
Windy was born July 7, 1943, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Isaiah and Nanny Bradford Blevins.
He was a member of the Oakland Independent Baptist Church and retired from AK Steel Corp. Windy served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 through 1964 and was a member of the National Street Rod Association and the Good Guys Street Rod Club of Columbus, Ohio, where he received the Best Engineered Car award in 2005 and 2006.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a brother, Wes Blevins, and a sister, Alberta Faye Blevins.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Douglas Mark Blevins and wife Jan of Summit, Ky., and Brent Matthew Blevins and wife Darby of Ashland; three grandchildren, Kyle Matthew, Malia Brooke and Mark Ryan Blevins; a brother, Carl Lee Blevins of Argillite, Ky.; and three sisters, Sue Nichols of Columbus, Ind., Nola Scott of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Valerie Everman of Grayson, Ky.
Most of you know that next to his family and grandchildren, cars were the love of Windy’s life. He requested, in his later days, that his friends arrive with their beloved cars and trucks to his services, which will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Oakland Independent Baptist Church with Brother Phillip Knipp and Brother Mike Miller officiating. Burial will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Mount Olive Cemetery in McArthur, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland.

Zona Ellen Stambaugh (1919-2009)
Zona Ellen Stambaugh was born April 1, 1919, in Greenup County, Ky., in a one-room log cabin to William and Myrtle (Earwood) Hurst.
On Sept. 17, 2009, she passed away peacefully in her sleep at Ashland Terrace Retirement Community in Lexington, Ky., where she had resided for the last six years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Stambaugh.
She is survived by four children, Jerry (Sharon) Stambaugh, Carolyn Stambaugh (Gordon) Nichols, Carl Stambaugh and Lawrence (Dorothy) Stambaugh. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Zona was a longtime resident of Ashland, Ky., and an active member of Grace Nazarene Church. For many years, she worked in the trust department of Second National Bank and as a home health care provider. However, her most important job was as a Christian wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland is handling the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 18. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Burial with graveside rites will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Ruth Bentley (1923-2009)
Ruth Adams Bentley, 86, of South Shore, Ky., died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born May 18, 1923, in Letcher County, Ky., a daughter of the late Edward Adams and Laura Bentley Adams.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, quilting and traveling. She was also a member of South Shore Old Regular Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Ellis Bentley; children Carol (Frank) Martin of Lancaster, Ky., Yvonne (Bob) Woodard of Winchester, Ky., Phillip (Linda Dale) Bentley of South Shore, Jeffrey (Jean) Bentley of Union, Ky., Joyce Bentley of South Shore, Linda (John) Patterson of Troy, Ohio, and Ellis “Ed” (Brenda) Bentley Jr. of Mount Washington, Ky.; three sisters, Ann Gibson of Indianapolis, Ind., and Geneva Boodry and Claudette Timberlake, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Bentley; a son, Jerome Bentley; a brother, Jack Adams; and a sister, Edith Williams.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore by Paul Matthews. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in South Shore.

Nannie Fraley Adkins (1921-2009)
Nannie Fraley Adkins, 87, of Argillite, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mrs. Adkins was born Nov. 26, 1921, in Elliott County, Ky., a daughter of the late Adam and Cynthia Fraley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Adkins; a son, Richard Adkins; three sisters, Zella Barber, Virginia Slone and Freda Salyers; two brothers, Paris and Faris Fraley; and two grandsons, Rodney Adkins and Brian Salyers.
She was a homemaker who loved to sew, do “word-seeks” and work in her flowers. She was of the Nazarene faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis and Harold Salyers of Argillite and Joyce Bauman of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, John Fraley and Toby Fraley, both of Ashland, and Sonny Fraley of Summit, Ky.; two sisters, Alberta (Ronald) McDowell of Ceredo-Kenova, W.Va., and Jeanie Fraley of Ashland; 13 grandchildren, Rickey Adkins, Leigh Ann (Edward) Ashley, Timmy (Renee) Adkins, Beth Taylor, Tim Arthur, Rhonda (Tony) Craft, Carlos (Julie) Arthur, Michelle Jordan, Michael Fette, Ronni (Michael Harris) Bunting, Lloyd (Shelly) Salyers, Patty Salyers and Mark (Marla) Salyers; 22 great-grandchildren, Nicholas Ashley, Brooke Adkins, John Taylor, Jennifer and Ashley Craft,Tabitha, Paige, and Carlynn Arthur, Jessica, Taylor and Madison Fette, Dillion and Shindy Harris, Shane and Harley Salyers, Murranda and Savanna Adkins, Paul Pritchard, Caitlin McCleese and Maddison, Mason, Makenna and Matthew Salyers; and a great-great-grandson, Shaun Roberts.

Garrett William Hazlett
Garrett William Hazlett, living only a couple of hours, was born in King’s Daughters Medical Center on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009.
He was the son of Derrick and Amber Conley Hazlett of Grayson, Ky. His other survivors include paternal great-grandparents Bill and Roberta Hazlett of Rush, Ky., Joy and the late Don Kennedy of Hitchins, Ky., and Thurston Lawson of Grayson; maternal great-grandparents Gary and Sue Conley of Rush and Roscoe and Jennifer Rogers of Olive Hill, Ky.; maternal grandparents Tom and Sherri Miller of Stinson, Ky., and Rick Hazlett of Rush; maternal grandparents, Joelle and Greg Kiser of Olive Hill and Mike Conley of Rush; an aunt, Kelsi Miller of Stinson; three uncles, Steven Miller, Levi Kiser and Zach Kiser; and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his passing.
