Johnelle “Johnnie” Lakin - 1936-2013

ASHLAND — Johnelle “Johnnie” Lakin, 76, of Ashland, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 19, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born March 4, 1936, in Ashland, a daughter of the late William and Georgia Howell Craft. She was also preceded in death by her son, Chris Lakin, in 1984. After years of unanswered questions, the family finds comfort in knowing she was reunited with Christ and her soul is now at peace.

Johnnie attended Second Baptist Church and was a graduate of Ashland High School. She loved antiques, cooking and singing. In her younger years she was a folk singer for 20 years with Jean Thomas, who was known as the “Traipsin’ Woman.” She performed on the “Dave Garroway Show” and at Soldier Field, Renfro Valley and Jenny Wiley State Resort Park. She conducted the Jean Thomas “Traipsin’ Woman” Folk Festival, as well as many others.

She placed her family above all. She was a loving and devoted homemaker who was accepting of everyone and judgmental of no one. She grew up very poor and from that came a tough exterior but a very soft spirit. She was the protector of many and was always for the underdog.

Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Harold D. Lakin Jr. of Ashland; a son, Greg (Bernna) Lakin of Barboursville, W.Va.; a daughter, Debbie (John) Fraley of Catlettsburg; a brother, Larry “Buck” Craft of Oregon; sisters Sharon Handley of Flatwoods, Phyllis Thornbury of Ashland and Glada Kelly of Ashtabula, Ohio; grandchildren Scott (Jessie) Evans, Clinton Evans, Travis Lakin and Jarod Lakin; stepgrandchildren Karrie Vance and Michelle Crisp; great-grandchildren Alivia Evans, Wiley Evans and Lincoln Evans; stepgreat-grandchildren Trinity Crisp, Emma Vance and Kali Vance; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Ed Caudill. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.

Friends may call after noon Wednesday at the funeral home.

Contributions are suggested to Second Baptist Church, 4950 Williams Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Condolences may be sent to steenfuneralhome.com.
