Elizabeth Ann Edwards - 1953-2013

WASHINGTON, DC — Elizabeth Ann Edwards of Washington, D.C., passed away after a long battle with cancer on Jan. 22, 2013, at her home surrounded by loved ones.  

She was born April 30, 1953, in Portsmouth, Ohio, the daughter of the late Gilbert and Virginia (nee Johnson) Edwards. She was also predeceased by her brother, Brian, of Portsmouth.

Ms. Edwards is survived by her husband, Mark Conheady; a sister-in-law, Marianne Edwards (Brian) of Ashland; cousins Joseph Edwards and Sylvia Ledford, as well as Penni Lane of Nashville, Tenn.; an aunt and uncle, Lillian and Warren Edwards of Franklin, Ohio; and a niece, Anna Cheala Edwards of Portsmouth. Additionally, she is survived by an extensive and adoring chosen family across the globe.

Ms. Edwards was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, The Ohio State University, Lone Mountain College in San Francisco, Calif., and the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt.  

Before moving to Washington and working as an events online planner at the American Postal Workers Union, where she leaves many friends, Ms. Edwards had a wide-ranging and diverse professional life, including serving as a paralegal for Pacific Gas and Electric in San Francisco, a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal for four years, a teacher of English to speakers of other languages in Japan, India, Thailand, Finland, Egypt and Italy, and finally at the School for International Training in Brattleboro.

Ms. Edwards’ extraordinary life will be celebrated in gatherings in Washington, D.C., and Portsmouth. A memorial celebration was Feb. 1 in Washington, and a memorial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at Memorial Burial Park Chapel in Wheelersburg, Ohio, followed by a luncheon at 2:30 p.m. at Market Street Café in Portsmouth.
