Janet Ruth Bodo - 1924-2013

ASHLAND — Janet Ruth Bodo, daughter of the late Col. Chaplain George L. and Ruth Kastenhuber Youman, who are both interred in Chaplains Corner of Arlington National Cemetery, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born July 17, 1924, in Great Meadows, N.J.

She was a graduate of Ashland High School, Ashland Community College, Marshall University and the University of Houston. She was a 52-year member of Eastern Star, OES 404, South Point, Ohio, Chapter and was a Kentucky colonel. She was on the board of directors of Ashland Community College’s School of Nursing and also Morehead State University, Shawnee State University and Collins Career Center. She was an honorary member of Central Baptist Church and its Philippines Mission Church. She and her husband, Bill, were instrumental in the implementation of the memorial walk at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East in Greenup County.

Janet retired as a personnel manager with Ashland Oil Inc. Human Resources, and was very active with the Ashland Oil Retirees.

Janet was a world traveler and a great humanitarian; she never said the first unkind word. There would not be enough pages to cover her love for mankind, which was above and beyond. Janet loved God, and was a devoted wife to her husband and mother to their children. She loved her career with Ashland Oil and the girls she worked with.

Survivors include her loving husband, Victor Bill Bodo of Ashland; a daughter, Deborah Ann Cordle Kouns and husband James of Nicholasville; sons Brian Cordle and wife Marieanne of Ona, W.Va., David W. Cordle of Smithville, Va., and Ronald Cordle and wife Virginia of League City, Texas; stepdaughters Dr. Catherine C. Bodo Spencer of Greenville, S.C., and Monterrey, Mexico, Mary V. Bodo Evans and husband Ronald of Ashland and Lisa L. Bodo Saunders and husband Terri of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Ecumenical services will be at noon Monday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Monsignor Lawrence Luciana, Pastor Darrell Clark and Brother Richard Shields. An Eastern Star service will start the services. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be sons, grandsons and great-grandsons.

The family will receive friends after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A memorial luncheon will immediately follow services in the Central Baptist Church fellowship hall at 600 29th St. in Ashland. Everyone is invited.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Central Baptist Church Philippines Mission, 600 29th St., Ashland, KY 41101 or the Institute for Dyslexia Education in Appalachia After School Program, P.O. Box 22, Emmalena, KY 41740.
