Betty Jo Hensley Flannery (1929-2010)

Betty Jo Flannery, 80, of Westwood, widow of Matt Flannery, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a short illness.

She was born Nov. 14, 1929, in Olive Hill, Ky., a daughter of the late Benjamin and Julia Shelton Hensley.

She was a homemaker, dedicating her life to her family and friends. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was very active at the senior citizens center. Betty was a loving, caring, thoughtful person who left an impression on all who knew her. Always funny, fun and always positive, she was a delight to be around. The planet needs a lot more Bettys.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Matt Flannery; a son, Ronald Lee Flannery; and a daughter, Judith Ann Turman. She was also preceded by two sisters and six brothers.

Surviving are the following: a son, David (Robin) Flannery of Georgetown, Ky.; two daughters, Anita (Joe) Melvin of Trenton, Ohio, and Brenda (Tony) Hale of Summit; a son-in-law, Dan (Alana) Turman of Edwardsville, Ill.; a sister, Mornin Hall of Titusville, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Chris (Jennifer) Turman (whom she helped raise) of Westwood, Jaime (Robert) Brown of Grayson, Shawn (Bethanie) Hale of Catlettsburg, Josh (Lauren) Melvin of Trenton, Dustin (Lisa) Hale of Cannonsburg, Jodi Melvin of Trenton, Billy Flannery of Georgetown and Ben Flannery of Georgetown; and her six precious great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Preston Family Funeral Home by the Rev. Tim Holmes. Burial will be in Flannery Cemetery in Olive Hill, Ky.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Betty will be missed by a multitude of family and friends.

Denver D. “Opa” Robinette (1924-2010)

Denver D. “Opa” Robinette of Ashland, Ky., passed away in King’s Daughters Medical Center on Monday morning Jan. 18, 2010.

Mr. Robinette was 85 years of age, born April 20, 1924, in Catlettsburg, a son of the late Nelson Pem and Johnnie Petry Robinette.

Denver leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Leopoldine “Paula” Robinette, whom he met during World War II in Linz, Austria, on the Danube. They have three wonderful children, Frank Nelson and Sherry Robinette, Monte Siegfried and Delorese Robinette and Denise Nora and Curtis Yates. They were the loves of his life. His grandchildren are Tracey Robinette, David and Erica Robinette, Eric and Amy Robinette, Sieggy and Kim Robinette, Curtis and Angela Yates, Robin and Jon Church, Randy Mosley and Cindy Maynard. His great-grandchildren are Taylor Robinette, Elijah Robinette, Samuel and Erin Robinette, Jacob Yates, Jayci Yates, Austyn Church, Ryleigh Church, Sierra Robinette, April Mosley, Whitney Childers and Monica Damron. His great-great-grandchildren are Autumn Wallace and Gracie Hanshaw. Opa also leaves a host of friends with whom he was their rock and fortress.

He proudly served his country during WWII in France, Germany, Austria and England. Denver was staff sergeant in the U.S. Army 66th Infantry Division European Theater with four months and 13 days of frontline combat. His awards include the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge and others. He served a total of five years and seven months.

He retired from Allied Chemical in South Point, Ohio, after 30 years as a control operator. Denver faithfully attended Moore Street Tabernacle and loved serving the Lord at various jobs. He was recognized as the church’s first deacon and a lifetime board member.

Denver and family took many wonderful vacations at home and abroad.

Funeral services for Denver Opa Robinette will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Moore Street Tabernacle in Ashland. Pastor Danny Pancake will bring a personal message and eulogy. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens following a military graveside service. Grandsons will serve as casket bearers and Moore Street Tabernacle board members as honoraries.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg and an hour before services Thursday at the church.



Emily Louise Spurlock (1984-2010)

Emily Louise Spurlock, 25, of Ashland, Ky., died in King’s Daughters Medical Center on Jan. 17, 2010, surrounded by her loving friends and family following a sudden illness.

She was born May 27, 1984, a daughter of Robert Bryan and Elizabeth Chamoun Spurlock, also of Ashland. She was a 2002 graduate of Fairview High School and a member of Grassland Community Church. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Bryson Elias Hale, and her fiancé, Ryan Hale; a sister, Landrea Spurlock; and a brother, Clint Spurlock, all of Ashland. Her maternal grandparents are Louise and Chafik Chamoun of Clarksdale, Miss. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Richard and Ruby Spurlock. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland with Pastor David Herndon officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Anne Ward

Elizabeth Anne Ward of Bellefonte died Jan. 18, 2010, at her residence.

She was born in Louisa, Ky., the daughter of John Henry and Lucille Roberts Moss.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Ward, in 1995.

She formerly worked as an administrative assistant to the dean at Marshall University. She was a member of Holy Family Church, very active in OLBH Auxiliary as well as its golf tournaments, a charter member and aided in founding the Paramount Woman’s Association, a member of KET, involved with Foundation for the Tri-State and Community Kitchen, a former YWCA board member, participated in the Yeager Scholars Program at Marshall University, formerly active in the Bellefonte Garden Club, instrumental in the organization of the first Paramount Spring Gala in 1986, active in Holy Family Church and School and a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are three daughters, Jane Moore and husband Max of Knoxville, Tenn., Jean Anne Semke and husband Scott of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Julie Klein and husband Roger of Ashland, Ky.; and grandchildren Kassie Moore, Sarah Anne, Hannah, Carrie and Jack Semke and Ward and Will Klein.

A celebration of life Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Andrew Garner, the Rev. Monsignor Lawrence Luciana and Deacon Bob Maher. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Michael Dean Conley (1942-2010)

Michael Dean Conley, 67, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at his residence.

He was born June 3, 1942, in Johnson County, Ky., a son of the late Ollie Conley and Mae Collins Conley.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ollie Allen Conley.

He was a retired crane operator with AK Steel, where he was known to friends and co-workers at “Rotten Arm.”

Surviving are a son, Chad Conley of Florida; a daughter, Micah Jackson of Ashland; three grandchildren, Brenna Jackson of Ashland and Camron Conley and Tristen Davania, both of Florida; brothers Steve Conley and his wife, Jolinda, of Ashland and Ron Conley of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Judy McFarlane of Phoenix, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Paul McNurlin. Burial will be in Conley Cemetery in Johnson County.

James Edgar “Jim” Stevens (1940-2010)

James Edgar “Jim” Stevens, 69, of Olive Hill, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, Jan. 19, 2010, at his residence.

He was born April 9, 1940, in Elliott County, Ky., a son of the late Arlie and Emma Susan Whitt Stevens.

Jim was retired from Painters Local 1072, where he had worked many years. He was founder and former pastor of Providence Freewill Baptist Church in Olive Hill, had been a Christian for more than 36 years and a minister for 35 years. For the past 25 years, he owned Stevens and Fife Auto Sales in Olive Hill.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Randy Dewayne Stevens and Earnie Stevens; a daughter-in-law, Pam Stone Stevens; a granddaughter, Chelsea Stevens; and a brother-in-law, Edd Frazier.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marie Smith Stevens; sons and daughters-in-law Arlie and Betty Stevens, Jimmy and Terri Stevens, Allen and Kim Stevens, Billy Stevens, Kelly Dolen and Donna Stevens Sloas, all of Olive Hill, and Joe and Tina Stevens of Morehead, Ky.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Bob Barker and Michelle and D.J. Carroll, both of Olive Hill; 11 grandchildren, Allison and John Stephens, Julia and Adam Houk, Heather and Eric Hilderbrand, Cortney Barker, Stacie Barker, Damon Stevens, Amber Easterling, Abby Stevens, Randy A. Stevens, Carter Stevens and Jaycee Stevens; three great-grandchildren, Rylee Hilderbrand, Addison Houk and Kyser Stephens; a sister, Oma Frazier of Olive Hill; and two very special friends, Brother Bob Roar and Brother George Barker. He also leaves several other extended family members, church family, neighbors and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Providence Freewill Baptist Church in Olive Hill with Brother Bud Buckner, Brother Roger Greenhill and Brother Bobby Day officiating. Burial will be in Stevens Family Cemetery on Adkins Road in Olive Hill.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and all day Thursday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill and after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Sons and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

John R. Patrick (1934-2010)

John R. Patrick, 75, of Franklin Furnace, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

The Garrett, Ky., native was born Dec. 13, 1934, the son of the late George and Angie McQuire Patrick. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lyda Lorraine Arthur Patrick, whom he married Jan. 25, 1955.

Mr. Patrick attended Garrett schools and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former employee of Farm Best Dairies in Ashland and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin sons Edgar and Edward Patrick; two brothers, Pat Patrick and Jack Patrick; and a sister, Georgia Hanshaw.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Bonnie Patrick of Franklin Furnace; three daughters and sons-in-law, Deanna and Donald Pennington, Jonda and Dwight Otworth and Vickie Patrick and Mark Aliff, all of Franklin Furnace; seven grandchildren, Tracy Pennington, Heather Pennington, Trenton Otworth, Trevor Otworth, Travis Otworth, Traye Otworth and Troy Otworth; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Jeanie Patrick and James and Mona Patrick; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Josephine Scutchfield, Trudy and Bill Carter, and Dorothy and Curtis Daniels; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, Ohio, with the Rev. Cleo Watson and the Rev. Randy Patrick officiating. Burial with military graveside rites will be in Haverhill Cemetery.

William E. “June” Rucker, 66, formerly of Rush, died Sunday in Indiana.

John “Jack” Fugeman (1914-2010)

John H. “Jack” Fugeman, 95, of Ashland, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born May 24, 1914, in Ashland.

His wife, Bernice Keys Fugeman, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Loretta Kitchen Johnston, 71, of Grayson, died Monday in the Cleveland Clinic.

Nicholas Joe Adkins, 30, of Elkfork, died Monday in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

Leslie Tackett (1942-2010)

Leslie Tackett, 67, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, died Monday in Springfield, Ohio.

He was born Oct. 14, 1942, in Johnson County.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hammond Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Tackett Family Cemetery at Whitehouse.
