LOUISA —
Arlen V. Burton, 4207 Ky. 32, Louisa, passed away Oct. 15 at the age of 81. He passed away peacefully in J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center near his home.
Arlen was born in Delmer on May 28, 1931, to the late Oscar C. Burton and the late Flonnie Smith Burton.
In addition to his parents, three brothers preceded him in death, Marlon, Glen and Bernard Burton.
He was formerly married to the late Barbara Norton Cruickshank. To that union were born two daughters, Sherry Burton Barker (husband William) of Louisville and Sonya Burton Wedge (husband Ronald) of Charleston, W.Va. He has five grandchildren, Sarah, Hayley and Will Barker and Mitchell and Madison Wedge. Other survivors include the following siblings: sisters Jewel (late Gene) Bramel of Erlanger, Montie (the late Rev. Leon) Wesley of Louisville, Lillian (Tom) Morrow of Fairfax, Va., and Christine (Ben) Shadoan of Greenville, S.C.
Arlen was a graduate of Nancy High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean Conflict to serve his country as a medical aidman and attained the rank of sergeant. Upon his return to the United States he enrolled and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He worked for the USDA Soil Conservation District as a district conservationist and retired with more than 25 years of service. He was a member of the Lawrence County Board of Supervisors with the Lawrence County Conservation District with 25 years of service, where he served as chairman for the past five years. He was a member of the Lawrence County Farm Bureau for more than 26 years and served as vice chairman for the past year. He was a volunteer at Eagle Ridge Golf Course, and was a former employee of the Lawrence County Board of Education, where he was a substitute teacher and bus driver. He was a member of the American Legion in Kenova, W.Va., and Louisa United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and had a love of the outdoors.
Visitation for Arlen V. Burton will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at Young Funeral Home in Louisa. A graveside service with full military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, where he will be laid to rest.
