Robert “Bob” Hill 1934-2013

CARTER — Robert “Bob” Hill, 78, of Grayson, passed away Feb. 26, 2013, following an extended illness.

Bob was born Aug. 27, 1934, the only son of Andy and Ella Pope Hill of Leon. He was retired from Armco Steel, was an avid farmer and a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sally Jones Hill; a sister, Jean Sansom; a brother-in-law, Lawrence “Dick” Hay; and Lizzie Sexton, who cared for three generations of the family.

He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Hill Lawson (Gil) of Frankfort; a son, Rob Hill (Marsha) of Grayson; two grandsons, Zack Lawson of Florence and Eric Lawson of Frankfort; two granddaughters, Sarah Lawson of Lexington and Whitley Hill of Grayson; three sisters, Carmen Hay and Patty Fite (David) of Grayson and Susie Burnett (Ronald) of Ashland; an aunt, Ethel Justice of Grayson; several nieces and nephews; and the Jim Fannin family.

Bob dedicated much of his life to the betterment of his community. He was a member of numerous civic organizations and served as an officer in many of them throughout his lifetime. He was the chief of the Grayson Volunteer Fire Department, a former member of the Grayson City Council and past president of the Grayson Jaycees. He also was a member of the Carter County Fair Board and the Kentucky Cattle Association and delivered Meals on Wheels. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Robert C. Webb Conservation Camp and Cardinal Girl Scout Camp. Bob was of the Baptist faith and affiliated with several churches. He was a member of Lake Road Freewill Baptist Church and attended Wolf Creek Baptist. He helped build Rush Freewill Baptist and Lake Road Freewill Baptist churches. In recognition of lifelong service to his community, Bob was named a Kentucky colonel by two governors and was the 2012 recipient of the S.U. Pratt Community Service Award.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Mike Roberts. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be John Buck, Tally Harris, Kenny Brammell, Mike Hay, Brandon Fannin and Randy Stanley. Honorary pallbearers will be Clifford Buck, Jim Buck and Ralph Barker.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be sent to the Grayson Volunteer Fire Department or Grayson Meals on Wheels.
