Ruth G. Russell (1929-2010)
Ruth G. Russell, 80, of Ashland, Ky., died Feb. 3, 2010, at her residence following a brief illness.
She was born April 18, 1929, in Louisville, Ky., and came to Ashland in 1945.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elza B. and Maxie Clevenger Ball; two loving husbands, Clifton Griffith in 1971 and Joe K. Russell in 1986; sons Kevin Griffith in 1976 and Steven Griffith in 2008; and a sister, Joy Bowling.
She was a former medical secretary for KDMC and Dr. Ashworth and a nanny and caregiver. She was instrumental in founding Community Hospice after the death of her son, Kevin, in 1976.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ashland for 55-plus years, where she was a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher and chairman of the prayer chain. More recently, she was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, David B. Griffith, and wife Lee of Versailles, Ky.; a stepson, Robert Russell, and wife Tawnee of Versailles; a daughter, Jennifer Griffith Sawyer of Berea, and her fiancé, Buzz Vaughn; sisters Hope Moore and husband Duran of Lexington, Grace Moore and husband Harold of Ashland, Nell Blemler of Massillon, Ohio, and Francie Shumate and husband Bill of Ashland; grandchildren Tyler, Matthew, Jennifer, Jacob, David and Lori; great-grandchildren Kevin, Mackenzie, Taylor and Noel; a lifelong friend, Doris Gallaher; and a special friend, Jim Melvin.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Ronnie Mayes and Dr. Harold Moore. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

She lived a wonderful life of spiritual integrity and vivacious good humor. Despite her many losses, she remained a testament of neverending faith and a symbol of strength and compassion to all who knew and adored her.

Cheryl Barndollar Brumfield (1959-2010)
Cheryl Barndollar Brumfield, 51, of Westwood, Ky., formerly of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Brumfield was born Jan. 1, 1959, in Russell, Ky., a daughter of the late Shirley Boyles Barndollar and the late Robert Alwin Barndollar. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Brumfield.
Surviving are a daughter, Carla Brumfield of Ashland, Ky.; two sons, Manford Thomas “Tommy” Brumfield of Ashland and Robert Joseph “Bobby” Brumfield of Manhattan, Kan.; three sisters, Brenda Brown of Shelby, Ohio, Betty Robinson of Flatwoods, Ky., and April Washburn of Bountiful, Utah; and a brother, Arthur Barndollar of Flatwoods.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky., by the Rev. Danny Brown. Burial will be in Boyles Cemetery in Alcorn, Ky.

Bonnie Jo Dickerson (1925-2010)
Bonnie Jo Dickerson, 84, of Worthington, Ky., affectionately known as Mrs. “D” by her students, lost her battle with cancer on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, John and Katie Staten of Russell, Ky.
She was born March 3, 1925, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of the late John E. and Thelma M. Kirk Harper.
She was also preceded in death by husbands Forrest C. “Walk” Staten and Thomas E. Dickerson.
She was an American history teacher for the Russell Independent School District with 30 years of service and taught at Russell High School. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russell, received the “Teachers That Make a Difference Award” from the University of Kentucky, taught Problems of American Life (a college level course) and started the award-winning High Q academic teams in 1979.
Additional survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, JoDee and Jack Gould of Milan, Mich.; a sister, Johnna “Tudy” Thompson of Ashland; four grandchildren, Sara Gould, Hanna Gould, Elizabeth (Jim) Flachsmann and Mistye Staten; stepgrandchildren Cheryl and Joe O’Connor of New Baltimore, Mich., Carol and Jeff Neal of San Diego, Calif., Tom and Tonya Riley of Warren, Mich., and Linda and Dave Skladonowski of Warren; three great-grandsons; a stepgrandson; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by her special Chihuahua, Pepe.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Elder Richard Sheffield and a eulogy read by Jim Lyon. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Pallbearers will be Jack Gould, James Flachsmann, Robert “Bo” Harte II, Robert Harte Sr., Joe O’Connor and Tom Riley.

Mary Lillian Gilley Turley (1923-2010)
Mary Lillian Gilley Turley, 86, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Feb. 3, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Turley was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Cheep, Ky., a daughter of the late William Wirt and Della McKenzie Gilley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene C. Turley; brothers Ronald, Raymond, William, Maurice and Garild Gilley; a sister, Gwen Gilley; and a granddaughter, Joi Lynn Bryson.
She was a homemaker and a member of Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods.
Surviving are sons Daniel Eugene (Carol) Turley of Greenup, Ky., and Brian Dee (Connie) Turley of Milan, Ohio; daughters Mary Ellen (Gary) Walters of Flatwoods and Deborah Mae (Claude) Atkins of Russell, Ky.; sisters Hannah Thompson and Ninette Amis, both of Flatwoods, and Marie Clark of Warren, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at Advance Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods by Pastor Phil Hogg, the Rev. Don Young and Vance Huston. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Linda Mae Early (1947-2010)
Linda Mae Early, 62, of Hanging Rock, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, in SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth, Ohio.
The Ironton, Ohio, native was born May 15, 1947, the daughter of the late Brooks and Bertha Mae Steele Johnson.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Early, whom she married on June 15, 1988.
Mrs. Early attended Rock Hill School and was a homemaker. She was a former nurse’s aide at Lawrence County General Hospital, Galion Community Hospital and several nursing homes for more than 23 years and a member of the Hensley Hollow Pentecostal Church of Christ in Flatwoods, Ky.
She enjoyed her family and church. Although she had no children of her own, she was like a mother and grandmother to her siblings and nieces and nephews. She was affectionately known as Granny Linda to her special great-niece, Alexis Justice.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma Dunlap and Mary Johnson.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four brothers, Johnnie (Agnes) Johnson of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Roy Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Phillip (Betty) Johnson of Galion, Ohio, and David (Rosalie) Johnson of Gurley, Ala.; and six sisters, Jean (Bill) Seabolt of Tarpan Springs, Fla., Sharon Jenkins of Coal Grove, Kathy (David) Fahrer of Mount Sterling, Ky., Pamela (Brian Bowman) Taylor of Sciotoville, Ohio, Lu (Johnny) Justice of Hanging Rock, Ohio, and Cindy (Cris) Chaney of Kitts Hill, Ohio.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, Ohio, with Pastor Rick Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Haverhill Cemetery.

Christy Michelle Johnston, 31, of Olive Hill, died Wednesday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.
She was born June 7, 1978, in Rowan County.
