Betty Ann Hardeman Rucker (1939-2010)

Betty Ann Hardeman Rucker, 70, of Summit, Ky., died Wednesday evening, Jan. 6, 2010, at her residence.

She was born Feb. 23, 1939, in Lewis County, Ky., a daughter of Myrtle Hutchinson Hardeman of Summit and the late Charles Hardeman.

She was also preceded in death by husbands Donald Lee Davis in 1968 and Wilbur A. Rucker in 1989; a stepson, Shawn Rucker; a brother, Glendall Hardeman; a brother-in-law, Stuart Nolen; and a nephew, Tony Hardeman.

She was a retired registered nurse in the surgical department at King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was a member of Summit Missionary Baptist Church, where she volunteered in the Clothes Closet. She was a graduate of the UK Nursing Program and a member of the Boyd County Homemakers. She loved reading, gardening and being outdoors. She gave tirelessly of herself in taking care of her family and friends whenever the needs arose.

Additional survivors include sons Sam (Rosanna) Davis of Summit and Bryan Scott (Monique) Davis of Little Rock, Wash.; stepson Michael Rucker; brothers Bob (Lois) Hardeman of Kentucky, Charles (Patti) Hardeman of Illinois, Larry (Trish) Hardeman of Indiana and Roger (Carolyn) Hardeman, Bill (Wanda) Hardeman, Jack (Kaye) Hardeman, Keith (Tammy) Hardeman and Delbert (Doris) Hardeman, all of Kentucky; sisters Sheila (Stan) Terry of Kentucky, Bonnie Nolen of Ohio and Dawn Hardeman of Kentucky; and a special angel and grandson, Samuel Damian Davis. She is also survived by many, many nieces, nephews and special friends who were very dear to her.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Kevin Meenach. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery in Lewis County.

Gene Wright (1935-2010)

Gene C. Wright, 74, of Rush, after a lengthy illness departed the presence of his loving family to be eternally present with our Lord and Savior, passing Tuesday evening, Jan. 5, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Wright was born Aug. 4, 1935, in Harmony Junction, Pa., a son of the late John Edward and Sarah Caldwell Wright.

Gene was former president and co-owner of Kentucky Electric Supply in Ashland and retired owner/operator of Electrical Switchgear and Supply Corp. Gene was a gentleman farmer and enjoyed horseback riding, camping and fishing at the beach. He served our great nation in the U.S. Army and was a member of Grassland United Methodist Church.

Gene leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years, Joan (Stitt) Wright; a son, Bruce Wright and his wife, Cindy, of Rush; two daughters, Valerie Porter and her husband, Mark, of Flatwoods and Pam Dales and her husband, Herb, of Newark, Ohio; brothers John (Sandy) Wright of Florham Park, N.J., and Richard Wright of Dunnellon, Fla.; three granddaughters, Allison Porter, Shelby Wright and Lexi Wright; four grandsons, Corey Heaberlin, Jesse Porter, David Porter and Andrew Porter and a soon-to- arrive fifth grandson, Gene Kyler Dales.

A funeral service to honor Gene Wright will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Kilgore and Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Gary Arrington will offer a message and eulogy. Final rest will be in Rose Hill Burial Park following military grave rites. The Wright family will receive friends after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

David Collins (1957-2010)

David Collins, 52, of Ashland, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Collins was born June 25, 1957, in Salinas, Calif., a son of Colbert and Doris Goble Collins of Lloyd, Ky.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Joshua Mollett of Ashland; three brothers, Daniel Collins of Greenup, Ky., Dwight Collins of Ashland and Chris Collins of New Jersey; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland, Ky. Burial will be in Kirby Flats Cemetery in Ashland.

Harold D. Rosenbaum, M.D.

Harold D. Rosenbaum, M.D., 88, of Lexington, Ky., husband of Doris Fooks Rosenbaum and chairman emeritus of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, passed away Jan. 3, 2010.

He was born in Fairplay, Ky., to the late George Leslie and Maude May Rosenbaum.

He graduated from Berea College and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Rosenbaum was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a physician at the Fitzsimmons Military Base in Denver, Colo., during World War II. Following the war, while in private practice in Lexington, Dr. Rosenbaum performed the first heart catheterization done in Kentucky at St. Joseph Hospital. In 1960, Dr. Rosenbaum was appointed the first chairman of radiology at the Chandler Medical Center. Dr. Rosenbaum established the first professorship chair at the University of Kentucky Medical School with monies donated by his past residents in radiology. He retired from the university in 1993.

Dr. Rosenbaum was a member of Southern Hills United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees. He did volunteer work for the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts and Kentucky Breast Cancer Coalition and was a reader of textbooks for the visually impaired. In June, Doris and Harold would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

Dr. Rosenbaum was preceded in death by three brothers, Elwood Rosenbaum, Stanley Rosenbaum and Bert Rosenbaum, and two sisters, Violet Landry and Mattie Cecil Rosenbaum.

In addition to his wife, Doris, Dr. Rosenbaum is survived by six children, Robin Rosenbaum of Skokie, Ill, Nancy (Jerry) Jones of Danville, Ky., Paula (Matthew) Jones of Fort Ann, N.Y., Harold Rosenbaum Jr. of Pulaski, Tenn., Stanley D. Rosenbaum of Albany, N.Y., and Anthony Rosenbaum of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Amy Jones, Jeff Jones, John (Carolyne) Krupa, Daniel (Veneza) Juarez, Lisa (Ethan) Jackson, Lesley (Brett) Thompson and Ellen (Wes) Pate; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Barbara Rosenbaum, Frankie (Jim) Meeks and Helen (Ernest) Sims.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren who loved him dearly. The family would like to express appreciation to Dr. John Gurley, Dr. Thomas Von Unrug and the nursing staff in continuing care at St. Joseph Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Southern Hills United Methodist Church, 2356 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington by the Rev. Dennis Burrows and Dr. Bill Moore. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations on behalf of Dr. Rosenbaum may be made to the Doris and Harold Rosenbaum Scholarship Fund, CPO 2216, Berea College, Berea, KY 40404.

Albert B. Howe Jr.

Albert B. Howe Jr. died at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas.

Albert Howe was the first Kentucky resident to be inducted into the LaRosa Hall of Fame. He graduated from Newport High School in 1935, where he was a three-year starter at center on the football team and a four-year starter at forward on the basketball team. He captained the football and basketball teams his senior year when he led the basketball team to the state finals as an all-state forward.

After graduating from Newport High School, Mr. Howe went to Xavier University, where he played both football and basketball for four years. As a fitting result to a superb college athletic career at Xavier, he was the only 1939 recipient of Xavier University’s coveted “Legion of Honor” award.

Mr. Howe went on to coach basketball and football at Newport Catholic High School. Mr. Howe served four years in the Army during World War II, where he served in the China-Burma-India Theater.

Mr. Howe was elected sheriff of Campbell County in 1953 and again in 1969. He worked in public relations and sales for the Snodgrass Distributing Co. in Bellevue. He was a volunteer at St. Luke East Hospital in Fort Thomas and at Carmel Manor, where he also helped with their fundraising campaigns.

Mr. Howe was predeceased by his first wife, Peggy Howe, in 1978.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Schroder Howe, to whom he was married for 30 years; his daughter, Candy Meyers of Fort Thomas, Ky.; his sons, Berry Howe of Fort Thomas and Thomas Howe of Ashland, Ky.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Richard Howe of Cold Spring, Ky., and James R. Howe of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home in Fort Thomas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas. Entombment will be in St. Stephen Cemetery Mausoleum in Fort Thomas.

Marie K. Williams, 85, of Ashland, died Thursday in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.

Her husband, W.W. Kaylor, died in 1977.

Sarah Sturgill (1938-2010)

Sarah Sturgill, 71, of Greenup, died Wednesday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

She was born Feb. 20, 1938.

Her husband, Seymour Sturgill, preceded her in death.

She was born June 2, 1946. Her husband, William “Bill” Baldridge, survives.
