Marie Williams (1924-2010)

On Jan. 7, 2010, surrounded by her family, Marie Kirk Williams, 85, of Ashland, Ky., ended a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and went to be with her Lord.

Born to the late Augustus and Minnie Kirk on Oct. 25, 1924, in Laura, Ky., she was raised in Martin County, Ky. She was married for many years to Jasper M. Williams and gave her all to six children, three children of her own, Cheryl Hall of Roseville, Mich., Tammy Steele (Brian) of Ashland and Pete Williams (former wife, Jennie), also of Ashland and three children who came with the marriage, Nancy Diamond of Lexington, Ky., Roger Williams of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, and Donald Williams of Ashland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Gladys Parsley, Ione Sartin and Odell Teeters as well as two brothers, Clyde Kirk and James C. Kirk.

She is survived by one sister, Opal Varney of Turkey Creek, Ky. She leaves behind 12 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren. After raising her family, she worked until retirement at Daniel’s Bakery in Ashland. She was a life-long member of the Church of the Brethren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Brian Steele. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Fielden Van Dickerson (1919-2010)

Fielden Van Dickerson, 90, of Ashland, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Westwood, Ky., the son of the late James and Anna Hall Dickerson.

He was a retired supervisor for the U.S. Corp of Engineers, a WWII Army veteran, receiving a Bronze Star and was a 55-year member of the Poage Masonic Lodge 325 F&AM.;

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Cora Elam Dickerson in 1981; and a brother, Millard Dickerson.

He is survived by two daughters, Helen Ruth Dickerson of Palm Springs, Calif., and Betty Hunt and her husband, Charles of Conroe, Texas; one grandson, Phillip Hunt; two great-granddaughters, Maeve Hunt and Sophia Hunt; and two nephews, Richard Dickerson of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Herbert Dickerson of St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. Mike Rice officiating. Burial will follow in Ashland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.



Evelyn Kaylor (1919-2010)

Evelyn Kaylor, 90, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday evening Jan. 6, 2010, at her home.

Evelyn was born Nov. 22, 1919, in Hinton, W.Va., daughter of the late Louis “High” Phillip and Ester Lee West Simmons. She enjoyed working at the C.H. Parsons Co. for many years, enjoyed sewing and loved reading her Bible.

“Nannie” leaves behind five grandchildren, Don Kaylor of Cocoa, Fla., Jacki (Chuck) Bishop of Ironton, Ohio, Rebecca (Clyde) Honacker of Columbus, Ohio, Regina Whitley of Cardington, Ohio, and Steven Kaylor of Columbus; and five great-grandchildren, Miranda Spillman, Michael Bishop, Bryanna Whitley, Nate Whitley and Patricia Lang. Also surviving are great-great-grandsons, Aaron Spillman, Dakota Spillman and Scottie Bishop and daughter-in-law, Patricia Kaylor. Evelyn was “Nanna” to many children, especially Patrick.

Mrs. Kaylor was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayman W. Kaylor in 1977; and two sons, Don Lee Kaylor and Thomas Scott Kaylor.

A funeral service for Evelyn Kaylor will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street, Catlettsburg. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Visitation for family and friends is at 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.



Thomas Bayless (1949-2010)

Thomas Bayless, 60, of Hesperia, Calif., formerly of Catlettsburg, Ky., went to be with our Heavenly Father, Jan. 3, 2010.

Thomas was born Oct. 31, 1949, in Ashland, Ky. He was the oldest son of Tom “June” and Ruby Bayless. He was a Vietnam veteran of the Navy and worked for San Bernardino County.

Mr. Bayless is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Delores; his children, Christine, Eugene, Scott and their spouses; six grandchildren, Desiree, Jasmine, Katrina, Brianna, Tommy and Samantha; brothers and sisters, George (Hazel) Bayless, Kathi (Bill) Adams, Gary (Margaret) Bayless, Jerry (Carol) Bayless and Linda Adkins; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, via the Internet at Touchstone Ministries in Catlettsburg on Louisa Street. Pastor Frank Hulett will officiate. Final rest will be in the Arlington Cemetery riverside.

Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until service time.

Mary Evelyn Mayse Lunsford (1930-2010)

Mary Evelyn Mayse Lunsford, age 79, of Worthington, Ky., died Jan. 7, 2010, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born April 3, 1930, in Raceland, Ky., a daughter of the late Siles Paul and Ruella Chinn Mayse. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Lunsford; brothers, Woodrow and Wetsel Mayse; and sisters, Elizabeth McBrayer, Buleah Melvin and Nell Coalgrove.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are a son, Jerry (Sue) Lunsford of Worthington; daughters, Sharon (Ray) Bowman of Worthington, Geraldine (Rick) Malone of South Point, Ohio, and Barbara (Donnie) Jacobs of Russell, Ky.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by Jack Edwards. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

John W. Brown (1941-2010)

John Walter Brown, 68, of Short Branch Road, Greenup, Ky., passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his home.

Mr. Brown was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of Elsie Adkins Logan of South Shore, Ky., and the late Carl Brown.

Mr. Brown was custodian for 23 1/2 years at Greysbranch Elementary School. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joanne Nelson Brown; two sons, Johnny Charles (Beverly) Brown of Ironton, Ohio, and Jeffrey Wade (Jennifer) Brown of Greenup; one daughter, Angela (Clinton) Gipson of Ashland, Ky.; two brothers, Carl Melvin Brown of Arizona and Virgil Brown of Maryland; two sisters, Noretta Bessalene Potter of South Shore and Mary Darlene Potter of Maloneton, Ky.; three grandchildren, Summer Brown, Alisha Brown and Gabriel Gipson; and one great-granddaughter, Skyler Brown.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Elder Ezra Burton. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery on Brushy Road, Greenup.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service Monday at the funeral home.



Leona Jane Adkins (1928-2010)

Leona Jane Adkins, 81, of Grayson, Ky., died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at her residence following a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 19, 1928, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Nannie Bush Carpenter.

She was a member of the Lindsey Methodist Church, Lindsey-Pactolus Homemakers and Lindsey-Pactolus Development.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Dale Adkins.

Her survivors include three daughters, Sue and husband, Ed Tackett, Carla and husband, Marvin “Gator” Prater and Cheryl Adkins, all of Grayson; one sister, Lucy Griffin of Melbourne, Fla.; five brothers, Ercle Carpenter of Wurtland, Ky., Elmer Carpenter of Columbus, Ohio, John Carpenter Jr., of Wurtland, Carl Carpenter of Kitts Hill, Ohio, and Wayne Carpenter of Wurtland; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010. at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Brother Tom Riffe officiating. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Sasha Rae Brown (1981-2010)

Sasha Rae Brown, of Grayson, died suddenly from injuries sustained following a car accident on Jan. 6, 2010.

Sasha was born May 13, 1981, to Tracy and Cheri Brown of Grayson.

She graduated from East Carter High School in 1999 and continued on to receive a BA degree in criminology from Morehead State University in 2003. She was a member of the First Church of Christ of Grayson.

Sasha was known for her deep respect and abiding love for all people and animals. In addition to her many cats and dogs that she loved and cared for as her own children, she also rescued everything from a litter of opossums to a baby bobcat.

In addition to her parents, Sasha is survived by a brother, Derek Lee Brown. Surviving also are her grandparents, Harry and Patty Brown of Grayson, Roberta Waggoner of Ashland, and William E. Waggoner of Grayson. Sasha also had a special boy that she dearly loved and cared for, Jace Jones.

In memory of her great love for animals, it is requested that in lieu of flowers, perhaps a donation to the Central Ky. Wildlife Rehab would be a more fitting memorial to Sasha at KyWildlife.org., Central Kentucky Wildlife Rehab, 2571 Ironworks Road, Lexington, KY 20324.

Sasha will be missed by a host of family, friends and pets.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan.10, 2010, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Kyle Burchett and Tim Nischan, officiating. Burial will be in the Everman Cemetery.

Belva Charlene Holbrook (1915-2010)

Angels escorted Belva Charlene Holbrook, 94, of Grayson, Ky., to her Heavenly home, on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation.

She was born June 2, 1915, in Jeriel, Ky., a daughter of the late John and Lillian Ratcliff Stamper.

She was a devout Christian for more than 50 years and a charter member of the Grayson Freewill Baptist Church. She was also a homemaker and loving Mother and Grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lev Holbrook; and one sister, Nell.

She is survived by two sons, Delmas Holbrook and his wife, Wilma of Grayson and William Randall (Buddy) Holbrook of Grayson; two daughters, Gay Flaugher of Grayson and Louise “Hootie” Carroll of Athens, Ala.; ten grandchildren, Patrick Holbrook, Cheryl Bradford, Tony Marshall, Beverly Walker, Brad Marshall, Glen Marshall, Jessica Evans, Jodi Carroll-Adkins, Jamie Carrie Carroll and Randall Scott Holbrook; 25 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her passing.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Lucian Watts. Burial will follow in the East Carter County Memory Gardens with grandsons and great-grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Delmar Ison (1929-2010)

Delmar Ison, 80, of Ashland, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Elliott County.

His wife, Charlotte Douglas Ison, survives.

Virgill Billman, 68, of Vanceburg, died Friday in Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.

His wife, Norma Blevins Billman, survives.

Larry Elam (1952-2010)

Larry Bruce Elam, 57, of Morehead, died Thursday in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

He was born July 12, 1952.

His wife, Sandra K. “Sandy” Sams Elam, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery.
