Delmar Ison (1929-2010)

Delmar Ison, 80, of Ashland, Ky., surrounded by his loving family, went to be with the Lord Jan. 8, 2010, from King’s Daughters Medical Center. He was born Jan. 30, 1929, in Elliott County, Ky., to the late Ezra and Nora Sparks Ison. He was a self-employed carpenter and was a Freewill Baptist.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Charlotte Douglas Ison of Ashland; a son, Rick Ison and wife Sharon of Rush; a daughter, Madonna Ratliff and husband Robert of Ashland; sisters, Shirley James, Jean Lutz and Evelyn Perrine; precious grandchildren, Madison Ratliff, Michael Ison and wife Amanda and Christy Goldsworthy Proctor and husband Aaron; and great-grandchildren, Kayla Goldsworthy and Dylan Ison.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harlan Ison, Gary Ison and Ron Mullins.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, by Rev. Ike Nicholson and Rev. Lance Campbell. Burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 10, 2010, at the funeral home chapel.

Pallbearers will be Rob Ratliff, Michael Ison, Rick Ison, Jim Griffith, Charles Johnson and Larry Rowe.

Don Phillip Morris (1938-2010)

Don Phillip Morris, 71, of Ashland, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at his residence. He was born June 27, 1938, in Louisa to the late Robert McKinley and Eulah Myrtle Bowen Morris. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Wells Morris of Ashland.

He retired as a sales manager from Kentucky Electric Steel and was a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the Moore Street Tabernacle.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Neal Bowen Morris and wife Nancy of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Vicky Watkins and husband Steve of Ashland; a brother, Buddy Gene Morris and wife Betty of Portsmouth; and a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Natole of New York.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Hassin Dwight Morris and Bobby Morris.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel by Dr. Dale E. Maddy. Burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home chapel.

Military services provided by the American Legion Post 93, Kenova, W.Va.

Clyde M. Newman (1922-2010)

Clyde M. Newman, 87, of Ashland, died Friday evening, Jan. 8, 2010, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital. He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Boyd County, Ky., to the late John Bernard and Mary Elizabeth Fannin Newman.

He was a retired pastor of Kenwood Baptist Church, former general manager of the Canteen Corporation and a U.S. Army veteran. His church and family were his life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Anna Katheryn Kouns Newman in 2006.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Picarello and husband Carmine of Westport, Conn.; two sons, James Newman and wife Cecilia of Ashland and Paul Newman and wife Linda of Ashland; 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at Preston Family Funeral Home by Rev. Joe Tatsak and Rev. Dallas Sutton. Burial will be in the Newman Cemetery.

John Walter Brown (1941-2010)

John Walter Brown, 68, of Greenup, Ky., passed away Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, at his home. He was born Nov. 22, 1941, in Greenup County to Elsie Adkins Logan of South Shore and the late Carl Brown. He was a custodian for 23 1/2 years at Greysbranch Elementary School.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joanne Nelson Brown; two sons, Johnny Charles (Beverly) Brown, of Ironton, Ohio and Jeffrey Wade (Jennifer) Brown, of Greenup; a daughter, Angela (Clinton) Gipson of Ashland, Ky.; 6 brothers, Carl Melvin Brown of Ariz., Virgil Brown of Md., David Brown of Ohio, Brady Brown of South Shore, Ky., Carlas Brown of Fla. and Greg Brown of Ky.; three sisters, Noretta Bessalene Potter of South Shore, Mary Darlene Potter of Maloneton, Ky. and Judy Brown of South Shore; three grandchildren, Summer Brown, Alisha Brown and Gabriel Gipson; and a great-great granddaughter, Skyler Brown.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Elder Ezra Burton. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery, Brushy Road, Greenup.

Mary Blanche Harmon (1937-2010)

Mary Blanche Harmon, 72, of Flatwoods, died Jan. 6, 2010, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods following an extended illness. She was born June 16, 1937, in Paintsville to the late Nolen and Ruby Dills Price. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Russell and was a retired food service employee with Russell Independent School System.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert E. Price and three infants, Harvey Burns Price, James Nolen Price and Jessie Lee Price.

Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia Smith and husband Chris of Winter Park, Fla.; and four sisters, Rosa Price of Flatwoods, Judy Tabor of Sharon, S.C., Faye Patrick of Flatwoods and Betty Castle of Flatwoods.

Keeping with Mary’s wishes, graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens by Rev. Ken Gowin and under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home. There will be no visitation.

Doris Ann Duffy (1946-2010)

Doris Ann Duffy, 63, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010. She was born in Ky. April 2, 1946, to Douglas and Mildred Van Hoose and spent her youth in Circleville, Ohio and was a graduate of Circleville High School. She then returned to Ky. where she married and raised her family and spent several years working and eventually owning her own business. Doris then met her current husband, Michael, and the two moved to the Columbus area in 1998.

Dorris was athletic and enjoyed tennis and golf. She and Michael loved sailing and SCUBA diving throughout the Caribbean. She also loved to play Bridge, a game she was able to enjoy almost daily. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, teaching them to play golf and cook. She was known to them as Granny D., and she loved to take them swimming and to visit the zoo. Doris was always pleasant, and even through her illness, never stopped smiling. She will be missed by her family for her helpful advice and comforting presence.

She was preceded in death by her father, Douglas Van Hoose; and a brother, Keith Van Hoose.

She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Michael Duffy; her mother, Mildred Van Hoose; children, Sherri Damron and Ryan Roberson; step-children, Shanna Carver, Ryan Duffy and Derek Duffy; 7 grandchildren and many other family members and friends.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Jack L. Rodway

Jack L. Rodway, 71, of Ashland, died Saturday in Bryant’s Health Care Center. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rodway.

Estil “EK” Justice (1927-2010)

Estil “EK” Justice, 82, of Pikeville, formerly of Greasy Creek, died Friday in the Pikeville Medical Center. He was born Oct. 20, 1927. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ona Justice.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville. Burial will be in the Annie E. Young Cemetery in Chloe.

Betty Wireman Salyer, 93, of Salyersville, died Friday.

Virgil Dean Billman (1942-2010)

Virgil Dean Billman, 68, of Vanceburg, died Friday in Meadoview Regional Medical Center in Maysville. He was born Jan. 1, 1942, in Lewis County.

Juanita June Messer Stevens, 82, of Morehead, died Friday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. She was born June 1, 1927. Her husband, Delbert Dell Stevens, preceded her in death.
