Jane D. Brown - 1918-2012

RACELAND — Ethelyn Jane Durrett Brown, 94, of Raceland, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

She was born June 27, 1918, in Russell, a daughter of the late James Cleveland Durrett and Ethel Beare Durrett. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward R. Brown; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Williams Leadingham; and a brother, James Lowell Durrett, who died at birth.

Left to mourn her passing are sons James Chester “JC” and Judy Brown of Flatwoods, Ed Ray and Patty Brown of Ona, W.Va., and David Michael and Tawana Brown of Worthington; daughters Linda Lee and Jerry Jones of Henderson, Nev.,  Jennifer Jane and Richard Caniff of Ironton, Ohio, and Vickie Lynn and Neal Honkonen of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Jane also leaves behind a sister, Mrs. Corinne Brown of Anna, Ill., and sisters-in-law Miss Chloetine Brown and Mrs. Juanita Brown.

During her lifetime, Jane graduated from Russell High School in 1938 and was fortunate enough to have attended Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky colleges. Then she began raising her family, which she considered the most important priority in her life. Cooking huge meals for the entire family to gather around was something she absolutely loved to do, along with playing cards with her grandchildren and making cross-stitch quilts for each of us, which we will treasure. After raising her family, she began her careers with the late L.H. “Pete” Nicholls and Judge Lewis Nicholls, attorneys-at-law in Greenup. She thoroughly enjoyed this type of work and loved all the people she met and worked with throughout the years. Jane was also formerly an active member of the Greenup Democratic Women’s Club and the MAC Club and was an honorary Kentucky colonel.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at Evans Funeral Home in Raceland. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at Temple Baptist Church in Flatwoods, where Jane was a member for many years and had reaffirmed her love for the Lord. Pastor Jim Pridemore will officiate. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Contributions in Jane’s memory may be sent to Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland or Temple Baptist Church in Flatwoods.
