DELAWARE COUNTY, OH —
Eddie Stapleton, 93, born Feb. 3, 1919, in Bruin, died July 16, 2012, in Genoa Township, Delaware County, Ohio, where he had been a resident since 2008.
He was the father of Dennis (Katie) Stapleton of Genoa Township, Steve (Linda) Stapleton of Beavercreek, Ohio, Larry (Patty) Stapleton of Wildwood, Ga., and Sue Ellen (Jim) Wilburn of Knoxville, Tenn. He lived in Washington Court House, Ohio, from 1961 to 2008 and owned Eddie’s Sohio on Dayton Avenue until an explosion closed the station in 1963. He then purchased North Street Market and operated it until its closing in 1975. He finished his working career at age 70 at Mac Tools Inc. In retirement, he was an active participant at Grace Community Church and just enjoyed helping others.
Prior to starting his working life, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1941, serving in the 37th Division, 2nd Battalion, 147th Infantry, Company A&F. He was overseas from April 1942 until May 1945, fighting in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and participating in battles on Guadalcanal, Bismark, Aechipelago and Iwo Jima, earning the rank of corporal. He received three Bronze Stars, the American Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Ribbon. He grew up in the hills of Elliott County, and was known to be fast footed. In fact, while in basic training in Shelby, Miss., he set the battalion record for completion of the obstacle course. After leaving the service, he married Lea Dale Green and lived in Wilmington, Ohio, working as a mechanic prior to moving to Washington Court House.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Ellen Johnson Stapleton; his brothers, Earl, Russell and Herschel; and a sister, Bertha (Lewis).
He is survived by a half brother, Paul, of Worthington and his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
