Glen Eugene Mathews 1928-2013

GREENUP — Glen Eugene Mathews, 84, of Worthington, passed away peacefully in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland with his caring family at his side.

He was born on Aug. 26, 1928, in Kanawha County, W.Va., to the late Charles W. and Sybil J. Chandler Mathews.

Glen retired in 1988 from C&O Railroad where he worked as an engineer, he also was a member of Bridges Christian Church and attended First Baptist Church of Russell. He was an avid bowler having played on leagues in Ironton and Ashland. Glen loved playing cards and was arguably the champion of the family “500 rummy” tournaments. Mr. Mathews served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy.

Besides his parents, Mr. Mathews was preceded in death in 2005 by his wife, Marilyn Mathews; and one brother, Charles William Mathews Jr.

He leaves behind to mourn a devoted and loving family including his lap dog “Otis” who was his best friend and buddy; his wife, Joan Balmoria Mathews of Worthington; one daughter, Amy L. Mathews Sparks and her husband, Ernie of Barboursville, W.Va.; two sons, Charles William Mathews of New Orleans, La., and Kent Eugene Mathews and his wife, Mary of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one stepson, Daniel Corum of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Helen Fisher of Winchester; five grandchildren, Zack, Ellen, Lindsay, Michael and Miranda; as well as one great-grandchild, Shannon; two nieces, Leslie Norton and Adra Fisher, both of Winchester; as well as a host of extended family members and friends, including his C&O Railroad buddies.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. Entombment will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens with military honors conducted by the VFW Post 8850 of Ironton.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
