William Webster Jr. (1951-2010)
William Byrd Webster Jr., known as "Chipper" to all of us, passed away on Jan. 20, 2010, at the age of 58 following a brief illness. Born on June 9, 1951, in Florence, S.C., and raised in Loris, S.C., Chipper lived in Atlanta for most of his life.
Although his life on Earth was much too short, his accomplishments were great. He was an Eagle Scout, as well as having received the "God and Country Award". He attended the University of South Carolina, Emory Dental School, then post graduate school at Emory University. He established his periodontal practice in 1982 in Marietta, Ga. As a professional, Dr. Webster's demeanor and philosophy earned confidence and respect from his patients and colleagues. As a husband, father and friend his love, values and character brought joy, laughter and acceptance to everyone who knew him.
Chipper is survived by his wife, Lee Ann, his children, Ashley Webster Arnold and William Zachary Webster, his grandchildren Banks and Maddie Arnold, his parents Jean and William B. Webster, Sr., and his sister Alston Coleman Monday.
A memorial service to celebrate Chipper's life will be on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. at St. Columba's Episcopal Church, 939 James Burgess Road, Suwannee, Ga.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or St. Columba's Episcopal Church.

Gartrell Chandler (1918-2010)
Harry Gartrell Chandler, 91, husband of Kathleen Chandler, of Grayson, formerly of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. He was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Ashland to the late Glen Chandler and the late Nellie Horn Chandler Brewer. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and retired as self employed builder/construction worker. He was a charter member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.
He also was preceded in death by two half sisters, Mildred Salyers and Margaret Porter.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Kathleen Adams Chandler of Grayson; three half brothers, Fred Brewer of Ashland, Robert Brewer of Marion, Ohio, and Charles Brewer of Catlettsburg; two half sisters, Helen Yoder of Ashland and Eileen Comer of Coal Grove; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Rose Hill Baptist Church by the Revs. Charles Stewart and Ronnie Mayes. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call Sunday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood.
Mabel Lorene Williams (1933-2010)
Mabel Lorene Williams, 76, of Ashland died Thursday Jan. 21, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was born March 17, 1933, in Boyd County, the daughter of the late George and Mary Click McCalvin. Her loving husband of 54 years, Glen Williams, survives. She was a charter member of Grandview Church of God and was a member of the Traveleers and sang in churches and on the radio for many years. She had worked at the Cinderella Dress Factory and was a devoted homemaker and caregiver.
She also was preceded in death by her brothers, Arthur McCalvin and two infant brothers; three sisters, Blanche Salyers, Emalene Roberts and Evelyn Ingles.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include two sons, Dana G. (Johnda) Williams of Ashland and Kevin D. (Debra) Williams of Columbia, S.C.; four brothers, Mitchell McCalvin, Delbert McCalvin, Albert McCalvin and Glen McCalvin; and three sisters Katherine Perfater, Judy Hutchinson and Edie Workman; four grandchildren, Dean Williams, Libby Williams, Carlie Williams and Calista Williams; and two step grandchildren, Cody Pennington and Colten Bryant.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel, by the Revs. Fred Workman and Albert McCalvin. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Francis William Sweet (1921-2010)
Francis William “Dick” Sweet, 91, of Louisville, formerly of Ashland, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. He was born Dec. 12, 1921, in Ashland, son of the late Jack Dillard and Della Mary Sweet. He was the husband of Mavis Alexander Sweet, who survives. He was retired from Allied Chemical and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Sandy Creek Golf Club.
He also was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Neal Frisbee.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Barbara Sweet; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tom Schoenbaechler; grandchildren, Kate Compton, Alex Sweet, Kelly Compton, Samantha Sweet, Katie Schoenbaechler, Greg Schoenbaechler, Jessica Broughton, Jamie Hosch and Taylor Broughton; and one sister, Della Burton.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Ashland. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland.
Pallbearers will be Richard Sweet, Richard Sweet Jr., Taylor Broughton, Tom Schoenbaechler and others to be named later.

Pam Peebles (1937-2010)
Pamela Field Molsberger Peebles, 72, of Ashland passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, following a brief illness. She was born March 3, 1937, in Ashland to the late Fredrick and Katherine Field Molsberger. Pam was a 1955 graduate of Ashland High School and was the coordinator of all the class of ’55 reunions and activities throughout the years. She was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Ashland.
She also was preceded in death by her husband Phil Peebles; two brothers, Joe and Fred Molsberger; and two sisters Betty Ball and Katherine Whitt.
Survivors include a son, Richard Peebles of Ashland; three daughters, Valerie Richardson of Ashland, Elizabeth Pelphrey and her husband Steve of Lexington and Katherine Scheser and her husband Mike of Louisville; four grandchildren Kyle Pelphrey, Derek Pelphrey, Chad Pelphrey and Lauren Richardson.
Pallbearers will be Steve Pelphrey, Kyle Pelphrey, Derek Pelphrey, Chad Pelphrey, Mike Scheser and Jeremy Molsberger.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church of Ashland, conducted by the Revs. Jennifer Johnson and Garrett Bugg. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood and one hour before the service on Sunday at the church.

Rebecca Thompson (1929-2010)
Rebecca Thompson, 80, of Kenton, Ohio, formerly of Ashland, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Hardin Hill Nursing Home in Kenton.
Mrs. Thompson was born Dec. 17, 1929, in Johnson County, daughter of the late Dennie and Nola Daniels Wheeler. She was a homemaker, of the Baptist faith and attended Oakland Avenue Baptist Church. Rebecca enjoyed sewing and crafts.
Surviving is one sister, Alice Mildred Wheeler of Kenton; two special nieces, Claudia Daniels of Ashland and Deborah Thompson of Forest, Ohio.
Also preceding in death is Becky’s husband, James R. Thompson Jr., and a brother Dennie Wheeler Jr.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Mike Blankenship will offer comforting words to family and friends. Final rest in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation for family and friends will be from noon Sunday until the service time.
Marchetta Ann Brawner Bowers (1935-2010)
Marchetta Ann Brawner Bowers, passed gracefully into her own dark night on Friday, January 22, 2010, surrounded by loved ones. Marchetta, born December 11, 1935, into a pioneer Carter County family, was a beautiful human being who touched and improved countless lives. Never rich in material possessions, she was wealthy indeed in spiritual values like love and compassion for others, values she shared freely with family, friends and strangers.
She was preceded in death by parents Maude and Jim Scott and brother Roy.
She is survived and missed by brother, Charles Murry Brawner; sister, Bobbie Jean Rovegno; sons, Charlie Dean and Tammie and James Randolph Bowers and Heather; daughters-in-law, Wendy and Betsy Bowers; grandchildren, Derick, Alison and Evan Bowers; “adopted” daughter, Michele Lenhard and husband, Mike; “adopted” grandkids, Samantha and Stephen Scales; special SPECIAL friend, Joan Bowers; loving former husband, Charles Bowers; and countless extended family members at Morning Pointe Assisted Living Facility in Russell.
Marchetta requests no flowers, instead suggests contributions in her name to Haitian earthquake survivors.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Christina St.Clair and Charles Bowers.
Private burial will take place in J.O.U.A.M. and Eagle Cemetery in Olive Hill.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until the service time Sunday at the funeral home.
John Boggs (1922-2010)
John Leslie “Blackie” Boggs, 87, of Grayson passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at his residence. He was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Hitchins, a son of the late Rand and Rebecca Murphy Boggs. He was a carpenter, farmer and a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army Air Force.
He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce L. Cains.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jewell Hay Boggs; one daughter, Carolyn Kay Boggs of Grayson; five sons, John F. (Diane) Boggs of Hitchins, George C. (Carolyn) Boggs of Grayson, Billy Joe (Joyce) Boggs of Willard, Marvin L. (Marsha) Boggs of Grayson and Timmy (Judy) Boggs of Covington; three sisters, Essie Isaacs, Hattie Baier and Minnie Womack, all of Grayson; 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Mike Rice, minister. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens. Graveside rites will be conducted by the East Carter J.R.O.T.C.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home.
