Francis William “Dick” Sweet (1918-2010)

Francis William “Dick” Sweet, 91, of Ashland, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in Baptist East Hospital in Louisville. He was born July 29, 1918, in Ashland to the late Jack Dillard and Della Mary Sweet.

He was a Navy and WWII Veteran. He retired from Allied Chemical after 35 years of service. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Sandy Creek Golf Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son in law, Neal Frisbee.

Surviving are his wife, Mavis Alexander Sweet; a son, Richard Sweet and wife Barbara; a daughter, Kathy Schoenbaechler and husband Tom; grandchildren, Kate Compton, Alex Sweet, Kelly Compton, Samantha Sweet, Katie Schoenbaechler, Greg Schoenbaechler, Jessie Broughton, Jayme Hosch and Taylor Broughton; and a sister, Della Burton.

Pallbearers will be Richard Sweet, Richard Sweet Jr., Taylor Broughton, Tom Schoenbaechler and others to be named later.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mabel Lorene Williams (1933-2010)

Mabel Lorene Williams, 76, of Ashland died Thursday evening, Jan. 21, 2010, at Community Hospice Care Center. She was born March 17, 1933, in Boyd County, Ky. to the late George and Mary Click McCalvin.

She was a member of the Traveleers and sang in churches and on the radio for many years. She worked at the Cinderella Dress Factory and was a devoted homemaker and caregiver. Also, she was a charter member of Grandview Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur McCalvin and two infant brothers; and sisters, Blanche Salyers, Emalena Roberts and Evelyn Ingles.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Glen Williams of Ashland; sons, Dana G. (Johnda) Williams of Ashland and Kevin D. (Debra) Williams of Columbia, S.C.; brothers, Mitchell McCalvin, Delbert McCalvin, Albert McCalvin and Glen McCalvin; sisters, Katherine Perfater, Judy Hutchinson and Edie Workman; four grandchildren, Dean Williams, Libby Williams, Carlie Williams and Calista Williams; and two step grandchildren, Cody Pennington and Colten Bryant.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2010, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Rev. Fred Workman and Rev. Albert McCalvin. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2010, at the funeral home chapel.

Inez Alexander (1924-2010)

Inez Alexander, 85, of Ashland, passed into the presence of the Lord Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in Boyd County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 25, 1924, in Rush, Ky. to the late Arvil and Ella Crisp Griffith. She was a homemaker and a member of England Hill Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Russell Alexander; son, Edward Alexander; brothers, Howard Griffith and Lawrence Griffith; and sisters, Geneva Hutchinson, Alta Reed and Maria McCormick.

Surviving are sons, Ronald (Cidney) Alexander of Ashland and William (Margaret) Alexander of Satsuma, Fla.; a sister, Emma (Wetsel) Phillips of Roseburg, Ore.; 8 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettburg. Pastor Mike Rice will offer a message of comfort. Final rest will be at Golden Oaks Cemetery.

Desmoine Dee Chaffin (1942-2010)

Desmoine Dee Chaffin, 67, a child of God, rests now in his Saviors arms, passing from King’s Daughters Medical Center Thursday evening, Jan. 21, 2010. He was born April 4, 1942, in Yatesville, Ky. to the late Mitchell and Dolly Mae Vanover Chaffin.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served our great nation during the Vietnam War. He was a mechanic for Special Metals Burnaugh Plant for 30 years and a member of the United Steel Workers of America Local 7153. He loved his garden and being outdoors.

He is survived by his adoring wife, Drucilla Ratliff Chaffin. Their union in April of 1964 brought to their home two beautiful children, a son, Jeff Chaffin and wife Kimberly of Flatwoods and Deanna Slone and husband Mike of Kennasaw, Ga. She also leaves behind a brother, Wray Chaffin and wife Brenda of Catlettsburg; three sisters, Sonja Brewer and husband Charles of Catlettsburg, Lillian Kimberlain of Ashland and Claudia Hood and husband George of Flatwoods; and a handsome grandson, Chase Slone, 13, of Kennasaw, Ga.

Funeral ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Rick Crews will deliver a message of inspiration. Final rest is in Golden Oaks Cemetery.

Robert L. Justice (1935-2010)

Robert L. Justice, 74, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at his residence. He was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Bruin, Ky. to the late John and Gladys Casteel Justice.

He was a retired supervisor for Smith Concrete Construction and in later years worked for Bush and Burchett Construction. He attended Bruin Enterprise Baptist Church and was a member of the Hepburn Lodge 576 F&A.M.; in Sandy Hook.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Justice; and a sister, Ruby Gillium.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louelle Ridgeway Justice; three daughters, Deborah and husband Harold Stinnett of Simpsonville, S.C., Pam and husband Steve Baddorf of Arlington, Texas and Roberta Justice of Bredenton, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Evans of Ft. Meyers, Fla. and Susie Simmons of Sandy Hook, Ky.; four brothers, John Justice Jr. of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Raymond Justice of Ashland, Ky., Eugene Justice and Billy R. Justice, both of Elliott County, Ky.; three grandsons, Christopher Stinnett, Michael Stinnett and Joseph Doughty; and a great-grandson, Aiden Stinnett.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Malone Funeral Home by ministers Enis Lewis Jr. and Tim Nischan. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and after noon Monday.

Harley Shianne Rayburn-Liles (Jan. 16, 2010 to Jan. 22, 2010)

Infant Harley Shianne Rayburn-Liles, 6 days old, of Olive Hill, Ky., passed away Friday evening, Jan. 22, 2010, at University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Ky. She was born Jan. 16, 2010, in Rowan County, Ky. to James Liles and Brianna Rayburn.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Barry and Connie Johnson Rayburn of Olive Hill; paternal grandparents, Kevin Bocook and Tammy Reed of Olive Hill; maternal great-grandmothers, Alta Rayburn and Violet Barnett, both of Olive Hill; paternal great-grandparents, Everett and Sarah Stamper of Olive Hill; a sister, Sierra Liles of Olive Hill; an uncle, Jacob Rayburn of Olive Hill; an aunt, Elizabeth Hoover of Olive Hill; and several other extended family members who will sadly mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brothers Kyle Burchett and Tim Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Mary Ann Wettling (1926-2010)

Mary Ann Wettling, 83, of Columbus, Ohio, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010. She was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Elkhorn, W.Va., where she was raised and educated. She attended nursing school in Huntington, W.Va. and practiced nursing at Bellefonte Hospital in Ky. while raising her family. In 1974, she gained employment at Riverside Hospital in Columbus where she worked until retirement in the late 1980s. She had a passion for growing flowers, watching birds and looking for seashells.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Michael Jupin Sr.; and a brother, Michael Jupin Jr.

She will be missed by her children, Cindy (Robert Hillen) Wettling, Robert J. (Teresa) Wettling, Richard (Lauri) Wettling and Ray Randy Wettling; grandchildren, Ashley (Brent) Guiliani, and Jerrod, Ali and Austin Wettling; a brother, George (Freda) Jupin; nieces; and dear friend, Sandy Wagner.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Schoedinger Northwest Chapel, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus. Interment in Union Cemetery.

Raymond Jones

Raymond Jones, 7, of Ashland, died Friday in Cabell Huntington Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Steen Funeral Home in Ashland.



Margie Leadingham

Margie Leadingham, 69, of Greenup, died Saturday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

Evans Funeral Home in Raceland is in charge of arrangements.



Clifford “Buddy” Frazier Jr. (1940-2010)

Clifford “Buddy” Frazier Jr., 69, of Lawrence County, Ky., died Friday. He was born May 22, 1940. His wife, Elaine Sturgill Frazier, survives.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa. Military Graveside Honors will be conducted by members of W.O. Johnson American Legion Post 89 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6103.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
