William Lawrence Mitchell Sr. - 1921-2009

William L. “Boots” Mitchell Sr., 87, of Lawrence, Kan., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009.

He was born Oct. 25, 1921, in Ashland, the son of Charles H. Mitchell Sr. and Lena Sparks.

He was a graduate of Ashland High School and married Zelma K. Skirvin Ross on Oct. 4, 1941, in Ashland. She preceded him in death on Sept. 30, 1998.

He owned C&E; Art and Engineering Service in Kansas before retiring in 1988. Mr. Mitchell was a deacon of the Southern Baptist Church and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lenexa. He was known for his folksy personality and quirky sense of humor and will be remembered for his passion for life, family and faith.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Glen C. Mitchell, and sister, Zelma Mitchell Hetrick.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret R. Mitchell of Sanford, N.C.; two sons, Charles F. Mitchell and his wife, Sharlene, of Atlanta, Ga., and William L. Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Lawrence; a brother, the Rev. Charles H. Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Gwendell, of Villa Hills, Ky.; a sister, Patricia A. Kern and her husband, Richard, of Homosassa, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Julia Mitchell of Ashland; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Olathe, Kan.

The family suggests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.

Ruth Lycan Smith - 1924-2009

Ruth Lycan Smith, 84, of Ashland, Ky., met her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 25, 1924, in Fort Gay, W.Va., a daughter of the late Wayne and Minnie Austin Lycan.

She was a member of Unity Baptist Church, where she served as secretary of the Sunday school for many years.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years, LeRoy Smith of Ashland; a son, Roy Allan Smith and wife Rita of Huntington, W.Va.; a daughter, Kathy Whitt and husband Roy of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Edgar Lycan and wife Ruth of Ulysses, Ky.; sisters Esther Fairchild of Ashland and Lillian Queen (Arlie) of Wayne, W.Va.; grandchildren Wendy Hooten of Milton, W.Va., Chris Smith and wife Heather of Huntington, W.Va., Shane Whitt and wife Amber of Canton, Ohio, and Tara Venditti and husband Chuck of Canton; and great-grandchildren Amanda Salvatore, Rachel Hooten, Rylee Whitt, Maisyn Whitt, Stephen Venditti, Catherine Venditti and Caroline Venditti.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 4, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by Dr. Floyd Paris and the Rev. Harold Cathey. Music will be performed by Johnny Stevens. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Melissa E. “Missi” Henderson - 1972-2009

Melissa E. “Missi” Henderson, 37, of Ashland, Ky., passed away Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Cabell County, W.Va., native was born Feb. 5, 1972, the daughter of the late Paul and Patricia Prater Osborne. She is survived by her husband, Paul Edward Henderson, whom she married Feb. 5, 1997.

She was a homemaker.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by three sons, Paul Henderson III and Dylan Henderson, both of Waterloo, and Drew Osborne of Ashland; two grandsons, Tyler Osborne and Drew Osborne, both of Ashland; and a brother, Paul Osborne of Savannah, Ga.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, Ohio, with the Rev. Jim Lee Cremeans officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Ray Perkins, Fred Ehrlich, Mike Harvey, Michael Harvey and Jamie Love.

Lorraine Fields - 1925-2009

Lorraine Frances McCoy Fields, 84, of Ashland, widow of Calvin Jason Fields, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2009, following an extended illness.

Lorraine was born March 3, 1925, in Boyd County, Ky., to the late Earl Raymond and Anna Branham McCoy. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Russell.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Jason Fields; a brother, Earl McCoy; and a sister, Virginia Wiley.

Survivors include three sons, Richard (Melinda) Fields of Raceland, James (Brenda) Fields of Wurtland and Ronald (Barbara) Fields of Ashland; two daughters, Kay Reid of Ashland and Nancy Monk of Raceland; a sister, Betty McCoy of Covington, Ky.; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 4, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by the Rev. Ken Gowin. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Friends may call after noon today at the funeral home.



William Eugene “Gene” Cooper - 1932-2009

William Eugene “Gene” Cooper, 77, of Ashland, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born March 21, 1932, in Morgan County, Ky., the son of the late Ollie J.B. and Lela Brown Cooper.

He was retired from CSX Railroad and the Kentucky National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Faye Cooper, and a daughter, Annette Cooper Harford.

Survivors include a daughter, Dixie Smith and her husband, Mike, of Ashland, Ky.; two sisters, Glenda Orndorff of Boyd County, Ky., and Ann Davis and her husband, Charles “Chops,” of Ashland; four grandchildren, Adrianne Cooper, Kyle Cooper Hyden and Kim Petitt, all of Ashland, and Kelly James Smallwood of Washington Court House, Ohio; and six great-grandchildren, Zoey Cooper, Brad Petitt, Chase Petitt, Haleigh Smallwood, Hannah Smallwood and Hope Smallwood.

The family will receive friends for a memorial visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.

Belva Salyers Holbrook - 1931-2009

Belva Salyers Holbrook, 78, of Wurtland, Ky., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.

Belva was born July 4, 1931, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Cecil and Ollie Bowling Salyers.

Belva was a member of Kenwood Baptist Church for nearly 40 years, where she was treasurer for several years and was a faithful worker in many areas of the church. She was an Avon representative for more than 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Seth Holbrook; four brothers, Troy Salyers, Chet Salyers, Otha Salyers and Beecher Salyers; and three sisters, Cora Wallace, Betty Howard and Mary Carr Fannin.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Holbrook of Wurtland; a very special friend whom she looked upon as a daughter, Kathy Collier of Load, Ky.; a sister, Phyllis Foughty of South Point, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Bill Howard of Worthington, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Stephens of Greenup, Ky.; several special nieces and nephews and their families; and her faithful companions, Sassy, Rascal and Sable.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Pastor Dallas Sutton and Brother Clyde Newman. Burial will be in Quillen Cemetery at Lynn, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.



David C. Baldwin - 1946-2009

David C. Baldwin, 63, of Grayson, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

David is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna Baldwin; his daughter, Allison Caudill and her husband, Benjamin, of Morehead; his father, D.C. Baldwin of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two brothers, Tim Baldwin and his wife, Lisa, and Van Baldwin and his wife, Andrea, all of Grayson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ishmael and Estelle Grim of Paintsville; a brother-in-law, Mark Grim and his wife, Judy, of Paintsville; a sister-in-law, Paula Grim of Paintsville; and several nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his mother, Berneeda Baldwin.

David graduated from Morehead State University in 1969. He taught business courses at Hitchins High School and East Carter High School for 32 years. During this time, he coached football for 18 years. He was the FBLA adviser, implemented the Raider Bank and served on the site-based council for several years. He retired from teaching in 2001. He was a member of the Jaycees and Lions Club and was a Kentucky colonel. Upon retirement, he remained actively involved by substitute teaching and umpiring girls’ high school softball. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, watching sports, spending time with his family and spending the winter months in Florida, where he attended Fellowship Bible Church in Zephryhills.

Services will be at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Grayson.

In lieu of flowers, the family has established a scholarship fund in David’s memory. The scholarship will be awarded to graduates of East Carter High School who attend Morehead State University.

Katie Prater Dolan, 85, of Salyersville, died Wednesday.

Henry Johnson Jr., 74, of Prestonsburg, died Monday.

Elmer Mahan - 1924-2009

Elmer Earl Mahan, 85, of Staffordsville, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Johnson County.

His wife, Esta Ward Mahan, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Friends may call until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Olivia Kaylee Rogga

Infant Olivia Kaylee Rogga, 85 days old, of Bayside, Wis., died Tuesday in Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

She was born June 9, 2009, a daughter of Brian and Lee Ann Goodan Rogga.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliottville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Lloyd Salyers - 1975-2009

Lloyd Adam Salyers, 33, of Grayson, formerly of Elliott County, died Tuesday in Carter County from injuries he received in a motor vehicle accident.

He was born Sept. 10, 1975, in Boyd County.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in Open Arms Cemetery in Elliott County.

Gladys Hartley - 1944-2009

Gladys Blanche Hartley, 64 of Vanceburg, died Thursday at her residence.

She was born Sept. 4, 1944, in Carter County.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery.

John Bartee

John Robert Bartee, 88, of Vanceburg, died Thursday in the Golden Living Center in Vanceburg.
