Roger F. Coleman 1951-2012

GREENUP — Roger F. Coleman, 61, of Flatwoods, formerly of St. Charles, Illinois, passed away Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Coleman was born Feb. 5, 1951, in LaSalle, Illinois, a son of Phyllis Landers Coleman and the late Ronald W. Coleman. He was also preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Pete and Florence Coleman; maternal grandparents, William and Elizabeth Landers; and his brother-in-law John Picco.

Mr. Coleman graduated from LaSalle Peru High School class of ’69, attended Illinois Valley Community College, and Southern Illinois University. Roger Coleman started his career in ad sales at the News Tribune in LaSalle, Ill., and moved to the Tampa Tribune, in Tampa, Fla. He then moved to St. Charles, Ill. and spent 20 years at the Kane County Chronicle, becoming the publisher. In 2002 he became publisher of The Independent, in Ashland. He was the president of Conley Media in Wis., and then became publisher of the Hudson-Catskill Newspaper in Hudson, New York. He always believed in being active in the lives of his family and his profession. Most recently he was past president of the New York Press Association.

Mr. Coleman was a devout Catholic. He helped develop his family’s strong ties to the St. John Neuman Catholic Church in St. Charles, Illinois. He attended and was committed to the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland, since moving to this area.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife of over 37 years, Christie Stevenson Coleman; two daughters, Courtney Anne Coleman of New York City,  N.Y., and Ashley Elizabeth and her husband, Daniel Kilgore of Savannah, Ga; “papa” to two grandchildren, Colton Brentley and Collins Teagan Kilgore; a brother, Rick, and his wife, Donna Coleman of Utica, Ill.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Dorothy Stevenson, of Utica, Ill.; sister-in-law, Cindy Picco of Middlebury, Ind.; brothers-in-law, Tom Stevenson of Peru, Ill., Tim Stevenson, of Waunakee, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at St. Mary’s Church in Utica, Illinois, with Monsignor James Swaner officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Vincent Cemetery in LaSalle, Ill., where he will be laid to rest with his father.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Hurst Funeral Home in LaSalle, Ill.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland with the Rev. Garrett Bugg and the Rev. Jennifer Johnson officiating.
