E.H. “Bob” Steenbergen

ASHLAND — E.H. “Bob” Steenbergen, of Ashland, passed away on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.

Bob was an automobile dealer in Ashland or 40 years, beginning in 1949, with the Hudson franchise. He acquired the Oldsmobile line in 1955, and in succeeding years, sold American Motors, Jeep, MG, and GMC trucks. He was awarded the Datsun (later Nissan) franchise in 1977, and purchased the Mercedes Benz dealership in 1980. He later traded the Oldsmobile franchise to Don Hall Chevrolet in exchange for the Honda franchise before selling his business and property to the Coggin-O’Steen Company in 1988. His company sold nearly 30,000 new and used cars during his business tenure in Ashland. He was also a U.S. WW II Navy Veteran.

Bob was a strong churchman all of his adult life. He served in many leadership capacities at Ashland First Church of the Nazarene until 1969, when he joined with a small group to establish the Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene. Always interested in building, he served as building contractor for the two building phases of the new church. He served on district, college, and international boards, including a term on the General Board, the governing body of the Church of the Nazarene.

Bob was married to Phyliss Pemberton Steenbergen for 68 years before her death in March of 2011.

He is survived by one daughter, Bobbie Jo (Carl) Taylor; two grandchildren, Kerri (Brian) Sox of Apopka, Fla., and the Rev. Brad (Kari) Taylor of Macedonia, Ohio. Also surviving are two great-grandsons, Braden and Keaton Taylor of Macedonia.

Bob was one of four children of Eubert and Moncy Stapleton Steenbergen; Jack Steenbergen, Mary Steenbergen Balof and Betty Steenbergen Haufler all preceded him in death.

A celebration of Bob’s life will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at the Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene with pastor Kevin Campbell officiating.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene, 784 Diederich Blvd., Ashland, KY 41101.

Steen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
