Dollie Sammons (1913-2009)

Dollie Stevens Barker Sammons, 96, of Olive Hill, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, Sept. 27, 2009, at the Hospice House of Huntington in Huntington, W.Va.

Mrs. Sammons was born June 26, 1913, in Carter County, Ky., to the late James and Margaret Barker Stevens. Dollie was a homemaker and a member of Clifty United Baptist Church for more than 70 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Lonnie Barker in February 1960 and Tom Sammons in September 1974; a grandson, Jarrod Barker in August 2009; five brothers, Tom Stevens, Marvin Stevens, Ezra Stevens, Oather Stevens and Hermal Stevens; and four sisters, Either Stevens, Ola Belle Knipp, Lola Messer and Elizabeth Waddell.

She is survived by three sons, Emerson and Bonnie Barker of Alliance, Ohio, Ronnie and Linda Barker of Olive Hill, Ky. and Roger and Jeanette Barker of Ceredo, W.Va.; three daughters, Phyllis and Charles Johnston and Sue and Roger Johnson and Joy Roe, all of Olive Hill, Ky.; a brother, Stanley Stevens of Delong, Ind.; three stepsons, Charles Sammons of Raceland, Ky., Claude Sammons of Minford, Ohio, and Bill Sammons of Swannanoa, N.C.; and 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and other extended family members, including church family, neighbors and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Clifty United Baptist Church with Brother Clayton Marshall, Elder Eury Barker and Elder J. D. Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Clifty.

Friends may call today at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, Ky., or after 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Rob Randalls, Billy Rowe, Brad Fuller, Shawn Collins, Rick Burton, Jerry Barker, Albert Delong, Jimmy Binion, Dru Shoppe and Walter Stubblefield will serve as pallbearers.

Jake Cogan (1920-2009)

Jake Cogan, 89, of South Point, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.

The Scioto County native was born June 23, 1920, to the late Louis and Emma Hughes Cogan. He is survived by his wife, Frances Marie Daniel Cogan, whom he married Aug. 26, 1953.

Mr. Cogan was a 1942 graduate of Hanging Rock High School and a U.S. Army Veteran. He retired from Armco Steel in 1983 after 35 years of service as a welder. He was a member of South Point United Methodist Church, where he was an usher and greeter for years. He was a loving husband and grandfather who enjoyed photography, carpentry and doing yard work outdoors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Blagg; two brothers, Charles Cogan and Walter Cogan; and a granddaughter, Deborah Kilver.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Connie and Michael Hardy of Kokomo, Ind., Carol and Fred Kilver of South Point and Christie and Randy Keffer of South Point; a son, Carlton and Mary Cogan of South Point; eight grandchildren, Christopher Hardy, Elizabeth Kilver Goodrich, Jacob Kilver, Rebecca Kilver, Anna Keffer, Andrew Keffer, Jake Cogan and Maddie Cogan; a great-granddaughter, Brooke Wininger; a brother, Albert and Ethel Cogan of Newark, Ohio; and a sister, Mary Ferguson of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton by Pastor Terry Washburn. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Virginia L. Smith

Virginia L. Smith, 90, of East Sparta, Ohio, formerly of Ashland, died Monday at her residence.

She was born in Wayne County, Ohio.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Finefrock-Gordon Funeral Home in Magnolia, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the funeral home to help defray expenses.

Howard Kent Cecil

Howard Kent Cecil, 76, of Spring Hill, Fla., formerly of Harold, died Sunday in the Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Spring Hill, Fla.

His wife, Callie Hunt Cecil, survives.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in the Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

Ruby A. Hall

Ruby A. Hall, 92, of Melvin, died Tuesday at her residence.

Her husband, Juluis C. Hall, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial in Davidson Memorial Gardens at Ivel.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Edna Hannah Hackworth (1923-2009)

Edna Hannah Hackworth of Paintsville died Tuesday at her residence.

She was born June 1, 1923, in Johnson County. Her husband, Albert Hackworth, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville. Burial in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and until services Friday at the funeral home.



Donna Patterson

Donna Sue Crownover Patterson, 41, of Salyersville, died Monday.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville.

Marjorie Tipton (1932-2009)

Marjorie Tipton, 76, of Ironton, died Sunday in a local health care center.

She was born Nov. 19, 1932, in Chillicothe, and was preceded in death by her husband, Julius W. Tipton.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home.
