Linda Kay Smithers (1946-2009)

Linda Kay Smithers, 63, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

She was born July 9, 1946, in Kayford, W.Va., a daughter of the late Franklin Lane and Madalee Songer Lane.

She was a homemaker and a member of Raceland Church of God.

Surviving are sons Jeff Fraley, Steven Fraley and Franklin Fraley, all of Ashland; a daughter, Tamra White of Ashland; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Michael Lane of Columbus, Ohio, and Bryan Artis of Cannonsburg, Ky.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 1, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Rick Mays. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.



Priscilla Sue Roy (1947-2009)

Priscilla Sue Barber Roy, 62, of Westwood, wife of Dorsie Glen Roy, died Monday evening in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 18, 1947, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of the late Delbert Barber and Lillie Mae Joseph Barber of Ashland.

She was a retired licensed practical nurse at King’s Daughters Medical Center and was preceded in death, in addition to her father, by a sister, Connie Wells.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Glen (Susan) Roy of Ashland and Chancie (Bari) Roy of Ceredo, W.Va.; a daughter, Denise (Rick) Meeks of Westwood; brothers John T. Barber and Lonnie Barber of Westwood and Delmar Barber of Catlettsburg, Ky.; a sister, Peggy Withrow of Flatwoods, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 1, 2009, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother John Haney.

Clarence Edward “Mousey” Gray Sr. (1915-2009)

Clarence Edward “Mousey” Gray Sr., 94, of Lexington, Ky., formerly of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Ashland, a son of the late William and Ruth Moore Gray.

He was retired with 44 years of service from Armco Steel Inc. in the blast furnace maintenance department. He was a former member of Unity Baptist Church, a member of Big Hill Christian Church in Richmond, Ky., and a 60-year member of Fred M. Gross Masonic Lodge 953, F&AM;, of Westwood. He was a Kentucky colonel.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred “Midge” Cossett Gray of Lexington; two sons, Clarence Edward Gray Jr. and his wife, Janice, of Ashland and Paul Victor Loar and his wife, Audrey, of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Terri Clere and her husband, Donald, of Hiram, Ga., Clarice Jayne Gilbert and her husband, Dan, of Lexington and Holly Riggs and her husband, Jim, of Lexington; grandchildren David Gray, Anita Smith, Chris Clere, Traci Bowman, Jodi Bailey, Dr. Paul Loar III, Bruce Clere, Bethany Sams, Jarin Howard, Katlyn Gilbert and Jacob Riggs; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Jim D. Riggs. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dan Gilbert, David Sams, Jacob Riggs, David Gray, Bruce Clere, Chris Clere and Paul Loar.

Stella Brown (1922-2009)

Stella Faye Brown, 87, of Oldtown, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital emergency room in Russell, Ky., after suffering a heart attack at her home.

Mrs. Brown was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Elliott County, Ky., a daughter of the late Emory and Myrtle Blankenbeckler Stone.

Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and a farmer, was of the Christian faith, was a Blue Ribbon quilt maker and had enjoyed quilting for many years.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lowell Stone, George Stone and Linzy Stone; and two sisters, Bertha Scaggs and Zelma Stone.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Edward Brown; a son, James Kenneth (Sheila) Brown of Russell; three daughters, Jewell (Aleck) Dean of Wurtland, Ky., Wilma (Ralph) Stephens of Oldtown, Ky., and Sandy (Philip) Litteral of Argillite, Ky.; four sisters, Opal Scaggs and Madge Lewis, both of Olive Hill, Ky., and Gretta Flannery and Vesta Flannery, both of Sandy Hook, Ky.; six grandchildren, Greg Stephens of Oldtown, Shellie Austin of Greenup, Ky., Joseph Litteral of Louisville, Ky., Jason Litteral of Grandy, N.C., Brian Brown of Cannonsburg, Ky., and Crystal Brewer of Russell; and nine great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Stephens, Rylee and Brody Austin, Hunter, Hannah and Hayden Brown and Caedmon, Izak and Caelyn Faye Brewer.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, East Main Street, Greenup, Ky., by Dr. Tom Melvin. Burial will be in Oldtown Cemetery in Oldtown, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church.

Mary Tanner (1946-2009)

Mary Lois Tanner, 63, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., formerly of Ashland, died Sunday at her residence.

She was born March 17, 1946, in Ashland.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Merrill Royse

Merrill Dean Royse, 59, formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday in Georgetown, Ind.

His wife, Carol Royse, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Love Funeral Home in Palmyra, Ind.

Harold Kielman (1940-2009)

Harold Kielman, 68, of Maysville, died Monday at his residence.

He was born Oct. 15, 1940, in Oak Ridge.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Monte Lewis Stamm Post 5438.

Friends may call an hour before services Friday at the church.

Michael Tibbs (1960-2009)

Michael Anthony Tibbs, 49, died Sunday in Pikeville Medical Center.

He was born July 12, 1960.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Thacker Funeral Home in Pikeville. Burial will be in Annie E. Young Cemetery in Chloe.



Gilford Mayhorn (1928-2009)

Gilford Gib Mayhorn, 81, of Morehead, died Wednesday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born May 28, 1928.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Sarah Hackworth (1928-2009)

Sarah Marie Hackworth, 81, of Ironton, died Monday in Hospice of Huntington.

She was born Aug. 14, 1928, in Lawrence County.

Her former husband, Frank Hackworth, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be at noon Friday at Woodland Cemetery.
