Mabel Thompson (1937-2009)

Mabel E. Blevins Thompson, 72, wife of Clarence Thompson Jr., of Ashland passed away Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, following an extended illness.

Mabel was born June 26, 1937, in Westwood to the late Albert and Ethel Porter Blevins. She had worked as a cook for the Fairview School system and was a member of the Westwood United Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Willis and Alvin Blevins. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Clarence Thompson Jr. of Ashland; two sons, Rick (Kathy) Thompson of Westwood and Terry (Joyce) Thompson of Bellefonte; a daughter, Gwendolyn (Mark) Grant of Westwood; three brothers, Charles Blevins of Westwood, Willie Blevins of Louisa and Elwood Blevins of Westwood; four sisters, Joyce (Ronald) Johnson, Betty (John) Grossl of Westwood, Cora (Jerry) Hall of South Point, Ohio, and Debbie (Roger) Esque of Raceland; eight grandchildren Julie Profitt, Scott Grant, Tiffany Stewart, Justin Grant, Aaron Thompson, Danielle Thompson, Matthew Thompson and Rebecca Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, Trey Profitt, Zoé Grant and Rylie Grant.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, by Elders A. J. Williamson, J. D. Riggs and Frank Lavender at Westwood United Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood with graveside service by Gary Murray.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood, and one hour before the service on Sunday at the church.



Mary Ellen Jewell Easterling Debord (1930-2009)

Mary Ellen Jewell Easterling Debord, age 79, of Olive Hill, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 1, 2009, in Life Care Center in Morehead.

Mrs. Debord was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Carter County, a daughter of the late John and Lucy Meade Easterling.

Mary was retired from the Olive Hill Elementary School where she worked as a cook. She was a Christian and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Debord.

She is survived by her companion, Eddie S. Sparks; four daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Dallas King, Linda and Talmage Reynolds and Cathy and John Dailey, all of Olive Hill and Donna McCallister of Ripley, W.Va.; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; five brothers, Bobby Easterling, James Easterling, Billy Easterling, Gary Easterling and Johnny Easterling Jr., all of Olive Hill; and seven sisters, Opal Stevens, Geneveve Bryant, Kate Hedge, Phyllis Easterling, Virginia Easterling, Joyce Jones and Judy Conn, all of Olive Hill. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family members and friends who will sadly mourn her passing.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother Jim Porter and Brother Eddie Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Debord-Easterling Cemetery.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

Donald King, Kyle King, James Ray Easterling, Ray Reynolds, David Dailey, Matthew Gregory, Mark Messer, Paul Horn and Ronnie Easterling will serve as pallbearers.

Retha Lynn Lowe Pursel (1964-2009)

Retha Lynn Lowe Pursel, age 45, of Georgetown, formerly of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 30, 2009, in Georgetown, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Ms. Pursel was born Sept. 21, 1964, in Rowan County, a daughter of Lloyd and Jessie Fultz Lowe of Olive Hill.

Retha was a 20-year employee of Estate Source Realtors in Georgetown and a graduate of Morehead State University in Morehead. She attended the First Christian Church in Olive Hill.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Dylan Lane Pursel of Georgetown; three sisters, Rosetta Lowe of Georgetown, Brenda and Gary Mozingo, and Caffie and Gary Caudill, all of Olive Hill; one niece, Shawna Erbe and Jim of West Milford, N.J.; and former husband, Ray Pursel of Georgetown. She also leaves other extended family members and friends who will sadly miss her.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother David Gee and Brother Ron Arnett officiating. Burial will follow in the East Carter Memory Gardens in Grayson.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday and until the service hour Monday at the funeral home.

Gary Caudill, Gary Mozingo, Jim McCormick, Elmer Lee Lowe, Mike Lowe, Lloyd H. Lowe and Allen King will serve as pallbearers.

Charles “Chuck” Plybon (1950-2009)

Charles “Chuck” Plybon, 59, of Kenova, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, at the Kenova United Methodist Church of which he was a member, with the Rev. Lindsay Thorp officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kenova.

He was born Feb. 1, 1950, in Fort Gay, W.Va., son of the late James O. “Chuck” and Floelizabeth Parker Plybon.

Chuck was a retired welder and machinist from the ACF Corp. He was an avid supporter of girls basketball and an assistant coach with the West Virginia Thunder girls AAU team.

He is survived by his wife, Carole R. Foster Plybon; one daughter, Kelsey Elizabeth Plybon of Kenova and one sister, Shirley LaFontaine of Florida.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 2, 2009, at the church.

Anthony Sanford

Anthony Todd Sanford, 42, of Ashland, formerly of Portsmouth, Ohio, died Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

Brown Funeral Chapel in Ironton is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Dorothea Fearing

Dorothea Kurtzhalz Fearing, 96, of Port Orange, Fla., formerly of Ashland, died Thursday in Florida.

Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the music programs at First Presbyterian Church, Ashland, Port Orange Presbyterian Church in Port Orange or Westminster by the Sea Presbyterian Church in South Daytona Beach, Fla.



Terri Vickery (1966-2009)

Terri Lynne Vickery, 43, of Greenup, died Sunday.

She was born Jan. 27, 1966, in Willows, Calif.

A celebration will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at her residence.



Cecil Heaberlin Jr. (1928-2008)

Cecil Bennett Heaberlin Jr., 80, formerly of Wurtland, died Nov. 1, 2008, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

He was born July 6, 1928, in Wurtland.

His wife, Irma Brewer Heaberlin, survives.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at Heaberlin Cemetery in Wurtland.



Elsner Counts (1917-2009)

Elsner Brintin Counts, 91, of Olive Hill, died Thursday in St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born Nov. 11, 1917, in Bottineau County, N.D.

His wife, Nell Sawyer Counts, survives.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Bowen Chapel Cemetery with military rites by Olive Hill American Legion Post 138.

Aythel Pence (1924-2009)

Aythel Mae Ison Pence, 85, of Fern Park, Fla., formerly of Olive Hill, died Tuesday at her residence.

She was born Feb. 2, 1924, in Carter county.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Olive Hill Memorial Park.

Donnie Clay Martin, 61, of Salt Lick, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born April 29, 1948.

His wife, Carolyn Pack Martin survives.

Eugene “Bob” Newsome (1939-2009)

Eugene “Bob” Newsome, 70, of Sitka, died Wednesday.

He was born June 26, 1939, in Ligon.

His wife, Geraldine Thurston Newsome, survives.

The funeral will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Father’s House. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Jewell McCoy (1942-2009)

Jewell McCoy, 66, of Johnson City, Tenn., formerly of Prestonsburg, died Wednesday in Johnson City Medical Center in John City, Tenn.

She was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Grethel.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home in Martin. Burial will be in Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel.

Clarence “Clair” Depriest Sr. (1929-2009)

Clarence E. “Clair” Depriest Sr., 80, of Pedro, died Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born June 11, 1929, in Pedro.

His wife, Linda Smith Depriest, survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Puckett Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 8850.
