Mary Lois Tanner (1946-2009)

Mary Lois Tanner, 63, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., formerly of Ashland, died Sept. 27, 2009, at her residence.

She was born March 17, 1946, in Ashland, Ky., and was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Eileen Lois Double Tanner.

She worked for Ashland Oil in Ashland and at various accounting firms in Florida and Texas and most recently at Malone Group Accounting and Consulting Firm in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

She was of the Presbyterian faith, educated in Ashland and Louisville, Ky., and a graduate of the University of Kentucky.

Surviving are cousins Carol and Ed Kashuba of Ashland, Robert and Carol Tanner of Charlottesville, Va., Charles and Toni Gartrell of Cape Canaveral, Fla., Roger and Martha Gartrell Bell of Covington, Ky., Douglas Tanner and Susan Tanner, both of Amarillo, Texas, Buck and Peggy Shrewsbury of Ashland, Lindsay Carol Gartrell of Cape Canaveral and Alice Ann and Lyle Herbig of Kenmore, Wash.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today, Oct. 4, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Gary Arrington. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Paul Roscoe Cyrus (1939-2009)

Paul Roscoe Cyrus, formerly of Boyd County, died of cancer in Hallandale, Fla. at the age of 69, one day before his 70th birthday. He is survived by his wife Carmella of Hallandale, Fla. and Badajoz, Spain.; a daughter, Annette Haider of Salem, Ore.; a son, Paul Cyrus and wife Stacey of Lutz, Fla.; a sister, Jan Cyrus Arnett of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, Tom Cyrus and wife Ellen of Catlettsburg, Ky.; and three grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Merlyn and Ruth Cyrus of Flatwoods, Ky. He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Burial will be at a later date in Spain.



Stephen Ray Farris (1956-2009)

Stephen Ray Farris, 52, of Flatwoods, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at his residence. Mr. Farris was born Dec. 27, 1956, in Ironton, Ohio, to the late Hershell Farris and Marjorie Webb Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Cochran; and a brother, Hershell Farris.

He was a member of the Melrose United Methodist Church and was a self-employed carpenter.

Surviving are his loving wife, Mary Eva Baker Farris; a sister, Patricia Baker of Worthington, Ky.; two brothers, Clifford Farris of South Point, Ohio and David Farris of Ironton, Ohio; and his true best friend, Larry Rister of Worthington, Ky.

Friends may call today, Oct. 4, 2009, at 1 p.m. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. at the Melrose United Methodist Church by Pastor Frank Wallace and Pastor Jack Edwards.

Margaret Taylor (1916-2009)

Margaret Ellen “Margo” Taylor, 92, of Radford, Va., formerly of Huntington, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, in the Radford Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Matewan, W.Va., the daughter of the late Grant and Rachel Ratcliffe Pigg.

She was a member of the Westmoreland United Methodist Church in Huntington, W.Va. for over 50 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband W. Sherman Taylor.

Survivors include a daughter, Jill Songer and husband Jerry of Christiansburg, Va.; two sons, Sherman F. “Scrappy” Taylor and wife Nell of Venice, Fla. and James “Chip” Taylor and wife Janice of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren, Sheree Taylor and Sherman F. Taylor Jr. of Tampa, Fla., Rachel Taylor of Melbourne, Fla., Sarah Tillery of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carrie Ellen Songer of Jacksonville, Fla. and Amanda Taylor Songer-Mikell of Bell, Fla.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home by Rev. Steve Grimes. Burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boyd County Animal Shelter, 1025 Bob McCulllough Drive, Ashland, KY 41102.



Phyllis J. Hall (1940-2009)

Phyllis J. Hall, 69, of Arcadia, Fla., died Thursday in Arcadia, Fla. She was born Sept. 20, 1940, in Ashland. Her husband, Bobby Joe Hall, survives.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Golden Oaks Cemetery in Ashland.

Reed Funeral Home in Greenup is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Perkins, 62, of Flatwoods, died Friday at her home.

Mary Carte (1921-2009)

Mary Elizabeth Short Carte, 88, of Flatwoods, died Friday at her home. Her husband, Robert B. Carte Jr. preceded her in death.

Caniff Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Anna Stewart

Anna Stewart, 90, of Grayson, died Saturday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Arrangements are pending at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.



David Blanton

David Blanton, 54, of Staffordsville, died Saturday in Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. His wife, Shirley Ratliff Blanton, survives.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Jones-Preston Funeral Home.



Shannon Ashley Ward Howard

Shannon Ashley Ward Howard, 29, of West Liberty, died Thursday in Morgan County ARH Hospital in West Liberty.

Funeral will be today at 1:30 p.m. at Herald & Stewart & Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty. Interment will be in Walnut Cemetery in West Liberty.



Mary Rowe (1945-2009)

Mary Elizabeth Rowe, 64, of Kenova, formerly of Catlettsburg, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. She was born Feb. 28, 1945, in Ashland.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Committal is at Catlettsburg Cemetery.

Friends may call Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
