Vivian Burke - 1920–2009
Vivian Olive Cole Burke, 89, formerly of Catlettsburg, passed away Saturday Oct. 17, 2009, in Richmond, where she was residing with her granddaughter, Lara (George) Dulaney, and the apples of her eyes, Mason and Dawson.
Mrs. Burke was born March 24, 1920, in Mount Vernon, Mo., a daughter of the late George and Martha Ella Stogsdill Cole. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Laburn Burke; two brothers, Jack Cole and Milford Cole; and two sisters, Reva Maynard and Wilma Phillips.
She was an Avon representative, known as “The Avon Lady,” for 53 years.
Surviving are her sons, Larry (Mary Lou) Burke of David, Ky., and David Dean (Pat) Burke of Georgetown, Ky.; a daughter, Linda “Bubbles” (John Kanouse) Kirtley of Ashland; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Mrs. Burke will be at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 22, 2009, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Officiating will be the Rev. Philip Duncan. Committal will be at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland, Ky.

Gertrude Arthur Rice - 1912-2009
Gertrude Arthur Rice, 97, of Flatwoods, Ky., died Oct. 20, 2009, in Kingsbrook Life Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born April 13, 1912, in Oldtown, Ky., a daughter of the late B.F. and Anna Rayburn Arthur. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William B. Rice; brothers Herbert R. Arthur and Ernest Arthur; and sisters Verna A. Thompson and Edith Riggs.
She was a retired teacher with the Russell Independent School District and a member of Bridges Christian Church and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.
Surviving are nephews Roger Arthur (Linda) of Russell, Ky., and Jerry Harrell of Wilmington, Del.; great-nephews Douglas and David Harrell of Wilmington; and great-niece Lisa Arthur of Columbus, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by Mark McKinney. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Margaret M. Preston Vanhoose - 1924-2009
Margaret M. Preston Vanhoose, 85, of Richardson, Ky., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, in Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa, Ky.
She was born March 7, 1924, in Richardson, a daughter of the late Arthur and Lillian A. Wilbur Preston Sr.
She was a housewife and a member of Richardson Primitive Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Hubert Vanhoose Sr.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Clinton) Rutherford of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Glenda (Clinton) Childers of Richardson; a son, Walter H. “June Bug” (Shirley) VanHoose of Louisa; four grandchildren, Rodney (Lynette) VanHoose, Matthew (Eva) Rutherford, Jason (Kristie) Rutherford and James “Jamie” (Mindy) Childers; three great-grandchildren, Kyle VanHoose, Jude Walker Rutherford and Max Cooper Rutherford; several nieces and nephews; and a host of church family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Young Funeral Home in Louisa with Elder Tommy Meade and Elder Brad Dutton officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Blain Duncan - 1938-2009
Blain Duncan, 71, of Olive Hill, died Tuesday at his residence.
He was born April 25, 1938.
His wife, Marjorie Holter Duncan, survives.
There will be no visitation or service.

She was born July 24, 1917, in Carter County.
