Clyde Edward “Eddie” Smith - 1946-2009
Clyde Edward “Eddie” Smith passed away Oct. 20, 2009, in Crestview Manor of Dayton, Ohio, with Hospice by his side.
Clyde was born April 27, 1946, in Ashland, Ky. He was retired from the Judo Steel Plant in Dayton. Clyde resided in Dayton for more than 40 years, which he loved, and met many friends over the years. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, which he loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Solomon and Jane (Gallaher) Smith of Ashland; three brothers, Richard Douglas, Bob and Jack, all of Ashland; and a sister, Virginia (Smith) Jacobs of Ashland.
Survivors include five brothers, James “Jim,” William “Bill,” Charles and Herbert “Ron” Smith, all of Ashland, and Bernard Smith of Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; two sisters, Veronica Louise Hunley of Ashland and Mary Davidson of Elko, Nev.; many nieces and nephews; two special nieces whom he loved so much, Sonja Gamble of Rush, Ky., and Tonya Smith of Flatwoods, Ky.; and a nephew who will proudly carry on his name, Charles Edward Hunley of Mechanicsville, Va.; and a great-nephew, Charles’ son, Braylon Edward. Clyde also left behind his best friend and closest to his heart, his dog Rusty, whom he loved so much.
Clyde loved everybody and will be missed by all.
He will be honored with a military service and be buried in Dayton, Ohio Veterans Cemetery at 11 a.m. Oct. 27, 2009.

Fred Long - 1943-2009
Frederick Kenneth Long, 65, of Ashland, husband of Judith Long, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 21, 2009, following an extended illness.
Fred was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Raleigh County, W.Va., a son of Evelyn Bryant Long of Barrett, W.Va., and the late Frank Long.
Fred retired as a safety coordinator after 35 years of service with AEP. He was a member and former elder of Westwood Christian Church, a member and former chairman of the Boyd County Board of Education and a member of the Ashland Community College Board of Trustees for a number of years. He was a Kentucky colonel. One of his proudest accomplishments was being heavily involved in the construction of the Boyd County High School baseball field.
Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Judith Downs Long of Ashland; a son, Brian Long of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Kelli Long of Ashland; his mother, Evelyn Long of Barrett, W.Va.; a brother, Frank Long Jr. of Barrett; and a host extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Westwood Christian Church by Tim Ingram, minister. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Parker, Kenny Parker, Alvin Parker, Jay Woods, Jeff McFarlin, John Ruggles, Kenny Downs and Keith Downs. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Shelton, Cy Reynolds, Jim Coburn, Steve Helms, Dan Blanton, Larry Cripple, Bob McCarty and Wayne Whitt.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Fred’s memory be made to the Westwood Christian Church Building Fund, 424 Wheatley Road, Ashland, KY 41101.
Sherri Lynn Bocook Conley - 1962-2009
Sherri Lynn Bocook Conley, 47, of Ashland, Ky., peacefully went home to be with her Lord on Oct. 21, 2009 in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
Sherri was born on Oct. 15, 1962, in Ashland, to the late Robert Bocook and Myrtle Mae Castle Bocook of Ashland.
She enjoyed attending outreach church services and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to her mother, Sherri is survived by a daughter, Krystin Dawn Salyers of Greenup; three grandchildren, Stevie Lynn Conley, Alexus Leigh Sal-yers and Kalen Tyler Sal-yers; three brothers; a sister and their families, Robert and Diane Bocook, Larry Darrell Bocook, Joseph Bocook and Jodie Spriggs and Sam and Connie Hampton; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and fellow residents at Sunset Nursing Home.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Philip Knipp.
Mark Edward Burdette - 1947-2009
Mark Edward Burdette, 62, of Nederland, Texas, formerly of Robin Road, Kenwood, passed away in Southeast Texas Medical Center on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, after a lengthy illness.
Mark was born March 10, 1947, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Jiles Edward and Dorothy Ellen Deke Burdette.
He is a 1965 graduate of Russell High School, graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering and was employed with Chicago Bridge and Iron in Beaumont, Texas.
Mark is survived by his wife, Carolyn Smith Burdette; a daughter, Amanda Jane Burdette Schoonover (Christopher), and a grandson, Jackson Carter Schoonover of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Samantha Jo Hampton Burdette Haddox (Fred) of Hurricane, W.Va.; and a stepson, John Walter Hampton Burdette of Greenup, Ky.
In addition, he is survived by siblings Deborah Ellen Burdette Kirtz (David) of Pittsburgh, Pa., Michael Edward Burdette (Paula) of Cannonsburg, Ky., Patrick Edward Burdette (Rebecca) of Fishers, Ind., and Jeffrey Edward Burdette (Traci) of Ashland, Ky.
A memorial service planned by Mark’s wife and daughter will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at Greenup Presbyterian Church with our dear friend, Jack Edwards, officiating.

Ina Mae Bowen - 1933-2009
Ina Mae Bowen, 76, of Kenova, W.Va., went to be with her Lord the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at home after a long battle with cancer.
She was born April 29, 1933, in Tomahawk, Ky., to the late Clara Gilispi Daniels.
She was a faithful member of Catlettsburg Freewill Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She united in marriage to Mr. Bonnell Bowen on March 16, 1957, and he survives.
Mrs. Bowen leaves behind her children, Marie Tapscott of Katy, Texas, Connie Overstreet and Cynthia Bowen of Huntington, W.Va., Wanda Staley and Teresa Bowen of Kenova, Garry Bowen of Cleveland, Tenn., Erma Morton of Charleston, W.Va., and Bernice Brown of Misawa, Japan. In addition to her children, she leaves behind 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Malta Clara Lackey, and a sister, Jenny Lee Sluss.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Catlettsburg Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Roger Branham officiating. Burial will be ub Maple Hill Cemetery in Kenova.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home in Ceredo.
