Lora Marie Wells Conley - 1936-2009

Lora Marie Wells Conley, 73, of Catlettsburg, Ky., passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, Ky.

She was born Jan. 18, 1936, in Ashland, Ky., a daughter of the late Ira Wesley and Lucy Jane Collins Wells Sr. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eucker Conley; a brother, Ira Wells Jr.; and seven sisters, Georgia Francis, Ida Hardy, Sue Huffman, Myrtle Howard, Geneva Howard, Erma Howard and Evelyn Gallagher.

She sold tickets for the Coalton Country Jubilee and was of the Baptist faith. She was a 1954 graduate of Ashland High School and Ashland Vocational and Technical College with a secretarial and accounting degree.

She is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Garry) Bayless of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Nettie (Chuck) Lewis of Grayson, Ky.; a son, Mark Wayne Conley of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two stepsons, Bill and Dean Conley of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods, Ky., by Pastor Michael D. Rice. Burial will be in Bayless Cemetery in Catlettsburg, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.



Don M. Virgin - 1923-2009

Don M. Virgin, 85, of Greenup, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Don was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Peach Creek, W.Va., to the late Orin and Sadie E. May Virgin.

He was a retired carman’s helper for the CSX Railroad, a member of Greenup Lodge 89, F&AM;, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and Wurtland First Missionary Baptist Church.

Don enjoyed gardening, selling produce, working and helping at Imel’s Family Greenhouse, as well as square dancing and going flea marketing.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lorene Scott Virgin, whom he married July 14, 1943; two sons, Gale Virgin and his wife, Gayle, and Kyle Virgin and his wife, Lisa, both of Greenup; a daughter, Connie Crum and her husband, Don, of Wurtland; a sister, Alberta Scott of Wheelersburg, Ohio; six grandchildren, Stephanie Bentley, Chris Bentley, Todd Virgin, Kylie Virgin, Elissa Virgin and Ethan Virgin; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary Virgin, Payton Virgin, Sophia Virgin, Kristen Crum and Nathanial Crum.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Marvin Boggs and Brother Butch Kiger. Burial will be in Virgin Cemetery at Argillite.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Masonic funeral rites will be at 7 p.m. during visitation.

Clifford Raymond Cooper - 1944-2009

Clifford Raymond Cooper, 65, of Webbville, Ky., formerly of Whiteland, Ind., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, from the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

He was born April 20, 1944, in Cherokee, Ky., a son of the late Ray and Opal Hunnicutt Cooper. He married Mary Swanagan on Sept. 5, 1964, and she lovingly survives. Mr. Cooper attended Webbville and Blaine schools, was employed with Cooper Tree Service in Whiteland for 24 years and was a member of Cherokee Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Carl, Lloyd, Clyde and J.L. Cooper; a sister-in-law, Sheila (Shields) Cooper; and a brother-in-law, Bill Stanley.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dwayne (Nancy) Cooper of Greenwood, Ind., and Kelly Cooper of Palmyra, Ind.; a granddaughter, Allison Cooper of Greenwood; three brothers, Harold Edward (Mattie) Cooper of Ashland, Ky., James Cooper of Whiteland and Ralph Cooper of Greenwood; and six sisters, Mary (Frank) Earl of Newark, Ohio, Mabel Coburn of Blaine, Ky., Ruby (John) Grooms of Bargersville, Ind., Alberta (Charles) Maynard of Grove City, Ohio, Sharon (Rhondal) Sturgill of Bruin, Ky., and Patty (Gerry) Geddis of Dallas, Texas. In addition to these, he is also survived by three special nieces, Shari, Courtney and Emily Roark of Greenwood; a special Aunt, Miriam Poole of Ashland, Ky.; a special uncle, James Cooper of Blaines Trace, Ky.; three sister-in-laws, Donna Jean Cooper of Mount Morris, Pa., Christine Cooper of Grayson and Willa Jo Cooper of Morgantown, W.Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Ky., by David Boggs. Burial will be in Cooper Family Cemetery in Webbville, Ky.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 26, 2009, at the funeral home.

Marvin B. Stepp - 1942-2009

Marvin B. Stepp, 67, of Ashland, died Sunday at his residence.

He was born Jan. 5, 1942. His wife, Irene Stepp, survives.

Lazear Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Thelma Naomi Johnson - 1910-2009

Thelma Naomi Johnson, 99, of Ashland, died Saturday in Community Hospice Care Center.

She was born Sept. 22, 1910.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church. Entombment will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the church or the care center.
