Anna Lee Watts (1930-2009)

Anna Lee Watts, 79, of Westwood, died Saturday morning at her home with her family at her side following an extended illness.

She was born July 4, 1930, in Elliott County, Ky., a daughter of the late James and Nora Smith Johnson.

She attended Ironville Independent Baptist Church, was retired from the Fairview Independent School District and was a Kentucky colonel.

Her husband of 61 years, James E. Watts, preceded her in death this summer. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Randolph and Joe Johnson.

Surviving are four daughters, Sandra Kay Young and husband Perry of Westwood, Ky., Margaret Ann Grubb of Smyrna, Tenn., Vicki Lynn Donta of Ashland, Ky. and Patty Jo Watts of Smyrna; two sons, James Earl Watts Jr. and wife Tina of Haverhill, Ohio, and Christopher Lyn Watts of Westwood, Ky.; six grandchildren, Tammy Jo Young Jackson, Hope Marie Young Lowe, Melony Ann Young McKinney, James Earl Watts III, Angela Michelle Grubb York and Brittany Smith; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at Preston Family Funeral Home by Brother Perry Young. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.

Anna Lambert (1933-2009)

Anna Imogene Foster Lambert, 76, of Grayson, died Saturday morning, Oct. 31 in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell.

She was born July 14, 1933, in Floyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late J.D. and Tempie (Bradford) Foster.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael; six brothers, Vernon, Velton, Chapman, Charles, James and Cletis Foster; and three sisters, Beatrice Daniels, Esther Carr and Irene Campbell.

She was a retired housekeeper and had been employed with the Carter County School District. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Shore.

Surviving is her husband, Edgar Lambert; a brother, Jack Foster of South Shore, Ky.; three sisters, Geraldine Preston of Paintsville, Ky., Phyllis Spradlin of South Shore and Sue Burnett of Grayson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3 at Sparks Funeral Home by Russell Foster, minister. Burial will be in Adkins Cemetery on Evermans Creek near Grayson.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 2 at the funeral home.

Clayton Burnett (1918-2009)

Clayton Alexander Burnett died Oct. 31, 2009, at his home at Lindsey Chapel, Grayson, Ky.

He was born March 18, 1918, in Grayson, to the late Edwin “Ned” Burnett and Ella Alexander Burnett.

He was baptized when he was 12 years old and was a member of Lindsey Chapel Methodist Church. He often quoted Hebrews 12:14: “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise James Burnett; a stepson, Thomas Watt Pope; a stepson-in-law, Harold Carroll; and two stepgrandsons, Christopher Pope and Luke Wellman.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Burnett; two sons, Stephen (Toni) Burnett of Ashland and Roderick Burnett; a brother, Edwin (Pat) Burnett of Long Beach, Calif.; and a sister, Alma Jackson of Grayson.

He graduated from Prichard High School in 1936 and Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo. He worked at Owens-Illinois Glass in Kanawha City, W.Va., as a drafting engineer and assistant plant manager until 1962. He returned to Grayson to pursue the love of his life, farming. He operated Burnett Polled Hereford farm and ran a large chicken house operation for many years. He served on the Carter County Soil Conservation board for 17 years. Part of his farm was subdivided to form the Corral Park Subdivision.

He sang with the Wheeler Parsons group at many area churches and maintained a large selection of music he enjoyed listening to.

He had a stepson, Tony (Bee) Pope, and two stepdaughters, Nancy Carroll and Sue (Harold) Wellman of Grayson.

Additional survivors include four granddaughters, Melissa (Rodney) Salyers of Olive Hill, Carrie (Chris) Boggess of Independence, Ky., Amy Stephens of Argillite and Allison (Arnold) Burnett/Kilburn of Pleasant Valley; stepgrandchildren Doug (Shirley) Carroll, Greg (Patty) Carroll, Mignon (Randy) Colley, Erica Gallion, Jeffrey (Shellie) Wellman, Tracy (Byron) Wallace, Tommy (Sylvia) Pope, Brooxie (Rodney) Newton, Shea Pope, Corey (Stephanie) Pope, Stephanie Geise, Ginger Johnson and Amber Amburgey; and great-grandchildren Cathy Ryker, Nicholas and Brody Stephens, Kelly and Kyle Burnett/Kilburn, Jessica Burnett, Jennifer Robson, Dakota Potter and Julia Boggess.

Also surviving are stepgreat-grandchildren Ashlee Bailey, Ian Johnson, Tyler, Ambrelle and Brian Amburgey, Brandy Litchford, Brieanna Colley, Dawn Keffer, Whitney Carroll, Crystal Shepherd, Junie Knipp, Lisa Sammons, Christopher and Rene Pope, Drew Pope, Thomas and Andrew Wallace, Mattie and Taylor Newton, Aaron, Nathan and Ashley Gallion, Brittney, Travis and Jeffrey Thomas Wellman, Evan Wellman and Ryan Royce; a great-great-grandchild, Autymn Marie Robson; stepgreat-great-grandchildren Jannessa Sayers, Nathan Keffer, Braxton Ison, Garrett Colley, Carlie Grace Litchford, Gregory, Jordan and Lidia Knipp, Kobe, Kyler, Conner, Kyran and Luke Gallion and Spencer and Lexie Gallion; nieces and nephews; and many, many friends and extended family.

He spent the last years of his life enjoying the swing on the back porch of his home. From there he could oversee the farming operation of his stepson, Tony, and his friend, Morris Shearer. He entertained many friends and family from his place on the porch and was always ready with a good story. He loved to entertain and each year he and Faye hosted a large family reunion. Clayton was an integral part of an extremely large family who will miss his great wit and wisdom. They have plans for a greater reunion someday.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson. Ministers John Moore and Lewis Davis will officiate. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Mary Porter, 87, of Raceland, died Saturday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Jared Sturtvant, 10, of Grayson, died Sunday in Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill.



Infant Madilyn Nashae Walters

Madilyn Nashae Walters, 5 months old, died Wednesday.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville.

The Rev. Wendell Johnson (1922-2009)

The Rev. Wendell Johnson, 87, of West Liberty, died Saturday in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

He was born Oct. 3, 1922, in West Liberty. His wife, Daisy Potter, Johnson, preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Potter Cemetery in West Liberty.
