Wilma A. Burkhart Broce - 1930-2009

Wilma Arlene Barber Burkhart Broce, 79, of Westwood, died Tuesday morning in Community Hospice Care Center, with her loving family at her side, following an extended illness.

Wilma was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Westwood, a daughter of the late Taylor and Nettie Douglas Barber.

She was a retired insurance clerk with Ashland Family Medicine and a member of Westwood Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Burkhart, in 1991; her second husband, Robert Broce, in 1996; and a son, Thomas Mark Burkhart, in 2001.

Surviving are two sons, Bill A. Burkhart and wife Pauline of Jacksonville, Fla., and Doug Burkhart and wife Ella of Ashland, Ky.; a sister, Peggy Ann Holbrook of Westwood, Ky.; three special nieces, Yvonne Fain and Ruth Jones of Westwood and Paula Caudill of Ashland; a special nephew, Jerry Dean Holbrook of Russell, Ky.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by minister Dean Jackson. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.

Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Westwood Christian Church, 424 Wheatley Road, Ashland, KY 41101.

Brenda J. Phillips - 1943-2009

Brenda J. Phillips, 66, of Ashland, Ky., died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.

She was born June 29, 1943, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Oscar D. Prince and Laura Withrow Prince.

She was a retired hostess at Paradise Lanes bowling alley and a member of Wayside Baptist Church.

Surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law Robert Prince of Ashland, Gary R. Prince and Norma of West Liberty, Ky., and Randy Prince and Nancy of Flatwoods, Ky.

Many thanks to the oncology department at King’s Daughters Medical Center and Ashland Community Hospice.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Clyde Bolling. Burial will be in Wellman-Prince Cemetery in Greenup County, Ky.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Nov. 5, 2009, at the funeral home.

David Haley - 1952-2009

David Edward Haley, 57, of Ashland, went home to be with the Lord after his passing on Tuesday evening, Nov. 3 from the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington.

Mr. Haley was born March 19, 1952, in Ashland, a son of the late Lawrence and Patricia Hulse Haley.

David was a retired activator operator at Calgon and a member of Second Baptist Church of Ashland. He enjoyed fishing, music and projects around the house. He was an avid UK basketball fan and a Kentucky colonel. His favorite scripture was II Timothy Chapter 4, verses 6 through 8: “For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

Surviving are his wife, Denise Branham Haley; a son, Michael David Haley; daughters Allison and Jarrett Haley of Louisville, Ky., Adrienne Clarke of Ashland, Andrea and Aaron Manis of Clarksville, Tenn., Janie LeMaster of Paintsville, Ky., Aimee and Shajai Jackson of Jefferson City, Tenn., Christy Lewis of Paintsville and Mahayla Dutton of Paintsville; a brother, Stephen Haley of Nashville, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren.

Also preceding in death was a sister, Beverly Williams.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6 at Ashland Second Baptist Church. Pastor Ed Caudill will offer words of comfort. Final rest will be in Ashland Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 5 at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg and an hour before services at the church.



James Donald Sturgill - 1941-2009

James Donald Sturgill, 68, of Ashland, Ky., died Nov. 4, 2009, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va., from injuries he received in an automobile accident.

He was born June 3, 1941, in Salyersville, Ky., a son of the late Joe and Maude Bailey Sturgill. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Prater.

He retired from the U.S. Army with 22 years of service and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the VFW.

Surviving are his wife, Vallie Sturgill of Ashland; a daughter, Kim Suzanne Richardson and husband A.J. of New Boston, Mich.; a brother, Hershel Sturgill and wife Joyce of Dayton, Ohio; and grandchildren Zachary James Richardson and Hailey Nicole Richardson.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Pastor Tony Daniels. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the funeral home.

Quentin Salyers

Quentin Salyers of Olive Hill died Wednesday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

His wife, Mayjean Tackett Salyers, survives.

Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill is in charge of arrangements, which are pending.



Carol Edington - 1956-2009

Carol Marie Cooley Edington, 53, of Vanceburg, died Tuesday at her residence.

She was born March 15, 1956, in Lewis County.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Camp Dix. Burial will be in Armstrong Cemetery in Lewis County.

Chester Ingram

Chester Grant Ingram, 65, of Wellington, died Tuesday in Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lexington.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at First Church of God in Frenchburg. Burial will be in Ingram Family Cemetery in Wellington.

David Fields

David Fields, 53, of Morehead, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was the husband of Edith Fields.

Edward Willim IV - 1959-2009

Edward Willim IV, 50, of Vanceburg, died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Aug. 29, 1959, in Washington, D.C.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Maysville. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.

Richard Estep - 1935-2009

Richard L. Estep, 74, of Willow Wood, died Monday in Jo-Lin Health Center in Ironton.

He was born July 5, 1935, in Wilgus.

His wife, Pauline Freeman Estep, died in 2005.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Linnville Baptist Church. Burial will be in Linnville Cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 2761.

Elizabeth V. Brown, 83, of Ironton, died Tuesday in Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.

She was born April 10, 1926, in Lawrence County.

Her husband, John Brown, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Lawrence Furnace Cemetery.
