Philadelphia Ann Harrison Robinson Walters - 1919-2009

Delphia R. Walters, born Aug. 10, 1919, to the late Dr. M.M. Robinson and Ida Benge Robinson, died Nov. 4 at Baptist Hospital Northeast in La Grange, Ky.

She is survived by her daughters, Marian (Bob) Bartley of La Grange and Dr. Barbara Walters (Phillip) Morris of Ashland; four grandchildren, Deborah Phillips of Crestwood, Rebecca Walters of Salt Lake City, and Todd Walters and Clay (Tina) Walters of Berea; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Known affectionately as Mimmie, she resided in Ashland several years after the death of her husband, J.A. Walters Jr., former lockmaster of Boonesboro. She graduated from Madison High School and attended Eastern State College in Richmond, Ky. She was a native and long-time resident of Madison County and a 31-year employee of Reppert’s Funeral Home in Berea. She was the namesake of an ancestor, the sister of Benjamin Harrison, 23rd U.S. President. She was a Kentucky colonel, charter member of Lewis-Benge chapter of DAR, volunteer for Berea Hospital Auxiliary, member of Berea Woman’s Club, a knitting group, and Body Recall.

In earlier years, she was active in various PTA’s and American Legion Auxiliary.

She followed the University of Kentucky Wildcats religiously.

The celebration of her life will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Reppert’s Funeral Home in Berea.

Roscoe Edward “Ed” Stephens - 1931-2009

Roscoe Edward “Ed” Stephens, of Maloneton, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

He was born June 1, 1931, in Load, Ky., to the late Roscoe and Nellie Sperry Stephens.

He was a member of Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. As a lifetime resident of Greenup County, Mr. Stephens served as an educator for 35 years in the Greenup County Schools and also in Boyd County Schools. During that time, he served as a teacher, coach, principal, instructional supervisor and superintendent of Greenup County Schools.

He held both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Morehead State University. Mr. Stephens was an avid UK football and basketball fan and a Kentucky colonel. He also served from 1950 to 1952 in the United States Air Force.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rise Elaine Stephens and two sisters, Mary Stephens Kilgore and Miriam Stephens Burton.

Surviving family members are his loving wife of 54 years, Joan Lemaster Stephens; three sons, Creighton Edward Stephens and Jon David Stephens of Maloneton and Thomas Mark Stephens (Anne) of Greenup; a great-niece, Mary Hafey Johnson of Maloneton; a sister, Lenore Stephens Shipley of Bonifay, Fla.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, Nov. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 9 at noon at Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Butch Kiger, Brother Marvin Boggs and Brother Jim Stephens presiding. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

American Legion Post 23 of Portsmouth, Ohio will conduct military rites.



Clayton Gifford - 1936-2009

Clayton Gifford, 73, of Grayson, died Thursday evening, Nov. 5, 2009 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 15, 1936, in Hitchins, Ky., a son of the late Earl Harlan and Myrtle Grizzell Gifford.

Clayton was retired from General Refractories Brick Yard in Hitchins and was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy May Marcum Gifford and four brothers, Kenneth, Dick, Lawrence and Richard Gifford.

He is survived by four sons, Danny, Bill, David and Donald Gifford, all of Grayson; one daughter, Peggy Fanning of Grayson; one brother, Bob Gifford of Mount Sterling, Ohio; two sisters, Helen Sagraves of Grayson and Mae Sells of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by Terry Dean. Burial will follow in Edison Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Gloriadene “Bootsie” Drown - 1935-2009

Gloriadene “Bootsie” Drown, 74, of Clayton, N.C., formerly of Route 75, Kenova, W.Va., passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 at home in Clayton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ceredo-Kenova Funeral Home in Ceredo with the Rev. George M. Plantz officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery.

She was born June 10, 1935, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy Esque Small. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Drown Jr., who died June 24, 1985; a sister, Helen Louise Spry; a son, John Wesley Drown and a granddaughter, Crystal Lee Drown.

Survivors include sons, Delbert Drown III of Huntington, Robert Lee Drown and wife, Andrea of Kenova, Frank Jeffery Drown and wife, Donna of Huntington and David Allen Drown of New Hampshire; daughters, Linda Louise Richards and husband, Fred of Clayton, Dorothy Marie Mount and husband, Gary of Milton, W.Va., and Lula Mae Sharp of Kenova; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Small and wife, Delores of Huntington; along with many other extended family and friends who were very special to momma.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at funeral home.

Raymond Roar - 1924-2009

Raymond Roar, 85, of Olive Hill, died Thursday in Veterans Administration Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va.

He was born June 7, 1924, in Carter County.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill. Burial will be in Roar Cemetery in Grahn.

William Knell - 1929-2009

William Chesley Knell, 80, of Vanceburg, died Thursday in Golden Living Center.

He was born May 20, 1929, in Laurel.

His wife, Goldie Johnson Knell, died in 1991.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Black Oak Cemetery.

Laura “Vicki” Branham - 1968-2009

Laura “Vicki” Branham, 41, of Pikeville, died Wednesday in Detroit, Mich.

She was born Feb. 20, 1968.

Her husband, Lawrence Branham of Anderson, S.C., survives.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at Thacker Memorial Funeral Home in Pikeville.
