Janet A. Evans - 1936-2009
Janet A. Evans, age 73, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday morning, Nov. 8, 2009, at her home following an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 21, 1936, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Walter L. and Pauline Bailey Lewis. She was preceded in death by her stepson, Emmor Evans Jr.
She was a retired Ashland Oil employee and a graduate of Ashland High School.
Surviving are her husband, Emmor Evans Sr. of Ashland; daughters Debbie (Claude) Brown of Ashland, Sandy (Jeff) Rice of Nippa, Ky., and Beth (Kelly) Petrie of Ashland; a stepson, Ronald (Mary) Evans of Catlettsburg; her stepson’s wife, Debbie Evans of Ashland; a sister-in-law, Patricia Lewis of Ashland; grandchildren Casey (Annie) Jones of Nippa, Adam Petrie of Ashland, Tessie Rice of Nippa and Evan Petrie of Ashland; four stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2009, at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens by Dr. Lee Gussler.

Elmer Scaggs - 1927-2009
Elmer Scaggs, 82, of Brighton, Mich., passed away at his home Sunday evening, Nov. 8, 2009.
He was born June 23, 1927, in Boyd County, Ky., the son of Robert and Addie (Whitt) Scaggs. In March 1954, he was married to Vera Bostain in Wattsburg, Ky., moving to Brighton in 1978.
Elmer was a member of the Brighton Church of Christ. Prior to his retirement in 1989, he had been employed as a pipefitter for General Motors.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Vera, are a daughter, Judith (Bill) Manns; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother and two sisters. Mr. Scaggs was preceded in death by a son, Robert.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Keehn Funeral Home in Brighton with minister Jay Tyler of Brighton Church of Christ officiating. Interment will be in Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2009, at the funeral home.

Paul E. Baldridge - 1936-2009
Paul E. Baldridge, 73, of Ashland, husband of Hattie Pennington Baldridge, died Sunday evening, Nov. 8, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following an extended illness.
Paul was born Aug. 11, 1936, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Ed and Clara Meeks Baldridge.
He was a member of Mavity Freewill Baptist Church and the former owner and operator of Paul’s Door and Window Service.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, Melvin and Ralph Baldridge, and two sisters, Geneva Daniels and Kathleen Queen.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Laura Wilson and husband Roy of South Point, Ohio, and Jane Wiley and husband David of South Point; two grandchildren, Jessica Gulley of Newport Beach, Calif., and Jerrid Wiley of Worthington, Ky.; two brothers, Elwood Baldridge of Flatwoods, Ky., and Carl Baldridge of Ashland, Ky.; and two sisters, Phyllis Wilson and Garnet Brooks, both of Ashland, Ky.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mavity Freewill Baptist Church on Ky. 3 in Catlettsburg, Ky., by Brother Mike Gullett and Brother Jess Brewer. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Martha Belle Leadingham - 1935-2009
Martha B. Leadingham, 74, of Ashland, Ky., died Monday morning, Nov. 9, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Martha was born July 1, 1935, in Boyd County, Ky., a daughter of the late Forest O. and Lena M. Robinson Darby.
She was a member of Second Freewill Baptist Church and a former member of Summit Nazarene Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Teresa Snyder and husband Mike of Westwood, Ky., Pamela Leadingham of Ashland, Roberta Littleton and husband Henry of Ashland and Greta Rodkey and husband Rod of Ashland; seven grandchildren, Amber Pratt, Aaron Snyder and wife Kayla, Rob Rodkey, Alyson Snyder, Jordan Rodkey, Paige Littleton and Austen Martin; and two great-grandchildren, Kaylynn Darbi Pratt and Rhannon Owen Pratt.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Randy Scaggs. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Edna Goldie Baker Vickers - 1913-2009
Edna Goldie Baker Vickers, 96, of Olive Hill, Ky., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 8, 2009, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson, Ky.
Ms. Vickers was born July 19, 1913, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Watt and Beulah Gorman Baker.
Edna was a homemaker and of the Church of God faith.
In addition to her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, David Webster "Webb" Vickers; a brother, Ercel Baker Sr. and his wife, Mary; a sister, Phyllis Baker Walker and her husband, Jesse; a brother-in-law, Blackie Robertson; a nephew, Lowell L. Baker; and a niece, Linda Walker Marsh.
She is survived by a sister, Ruby Baker Robertson of Huntington, W.Va.; three nephews, Ercil Baker and wife Betty of Evansville, Ind., Larry Walker and wife Wanda of Canton, Mich., and Harold Baker and wife Elizabeth Ann of Olive Hill; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews; 14 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and three great-great-great-nieces and great-great-great-nephews. She also leaves several other extended family members and friends.
Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2009, at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill with Brother Mike Blankenship officiating. Burial will be in Jr. OUAM Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Edna Marie Floyd Stapleton - 1916-2009
Edna Marie Floyd Stapleton, 93, surrounded by her family and friends, went to be with the Lord on Nov. 7, 2009, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 16, 1916, in Carter County, the daughter of the late George and Emma Elliott Floyd. She was a housewife and mother and a member of Straight Creek Nazarene Church.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Luther Stapleton; four brothers, Leonard, Lonnie, Clyde and John Floyd; and three sisters, Betty Stephens, Ruby Simon and Evie Wilburn.
Her survivors include a daughter, Mae Louise Walker of Ashland; and five sons, Luther (Gledia) Stapleton of Lorain, Ohio, Leroy (Patty), Earl (Claudette) and Randall (Jackie) Stapleton, all of Ashland, Ky., and Donald (Joy) Stapleton of Rush.
The Lord blessed her with 16 granchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Brother Mickey King officiating. Burial was in Adkins Cemetery near Grayson.
Visitation was from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mary Enna Horne - 1910-2009
Mary Enna Horne, 99, of Rush, Ky., went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in Heartland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Point, Ohio.
She was born March 21, 1910, in Iron Hill, Ky., a daughter of the late Frank and Junie Franklin Davis. She was a schoolteacher at Iron Hill and Fairview and a member of Rush Missionary Baptist Church since 1954, where she taught Sunday school for more than 30 years. She loved crocheting, quilts and gardening.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Horne, in 2002; brothers Howard, Hobert and John Davis; sisters Bertha Goodwin, Ida Davis and Jewell Davis; and a niece, Kimberly Robinson.
Her survivors include three nephews, Gary Goodwin, Roy Francis Hall and Brent Davis; seven nieces, Joyce Goodwin Leaver, Janet Smith, Mary Lee Adams, Jeanette Rogers, Susan Davis, Karen Davis and Melissa Sainz; a special great-nephew, Douglas Leaver; and a special friend and neighbor, Norma Jean Ingle.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2009, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by Jerry Foster, minister. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

John Paul Dravenstott, 54, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
He was born July 28, 1955, in Grayson, a son of James Russell Dravenstott of Willard and the late Juanita Reeves Dravenstott.
He was employed with Ford Motor Co. in Lorain, Ohio, a member of United Auto Workers, of the Baptist faith and a musician and vocalist.
He is survived by a special friend, Brenda Maggard; three daughters, Angela and husband Eddie Young, Felicia and husband Robert Barker and Regina and husband Earl Childers, all of Scotts Branch; the mother of children, Arlene Dravenstott; a sister, Joyce and husband Joe McDavid of Willard; a brother, James and wife Roberta Dravenstott of Aliquippa, Pa.; grandchildren Ashley Dravenstott, Dalton Young, Tanner Young, Barren Paul Barker, Misty Barker, Trinity Barker, Dylan Childers and Shawn Childers; and several nieces and nephews.

Roberta Louise Layne - 1940-2009
Roberta Louise Layne, 69, of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in the Southern Ohio Medical Center’s Emergency Room.
She was born Oct. 1, 1940, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Virgil and Margaret Wymer Chamberlin.
She was a registered nurse who retired from SOMC, a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Sciotoville and its Rebekah and Mary Martha circles and a member of the C.P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society.
Roberta is survived by her husband, James W. Layne III, whom she married March 10, 1973, in Slocum Station; a son, James W. Layne IV, at home; a daughter, Valerie Ann (Roger) Davis of Fincastle, Va.; a stepdaughter, Angela Layne Geis of Kenova, W.Va.; two brothers, Marvin (Mary Lou) Chamberlin of South Webster and Robert (Romonia) Chamberlin of Marysville, Ohio; a sister, Marilyn (Phillip) Mattson of Columbus; a granddaughter, Hannah Dawn Horner-Layne; and a stepgranddaughter, Allison Geis.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Christ United Methodist Church in Sciotoville by the Rev. Frank James and the Rev. Richard North. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
