Mary Childers - 1955-2009
Mary Childers, 54, of Ashland, Ky., died Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 18, 1955, in Ashland, the daughter of the late Edgar Ray and Easter Morrison Kimbler Justice.
She was an employee of Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road and Gatti Land. She was also a member of Abundant Life United Pentecostal Church in Raceland, Ky.
Survivors include her husband, Guy E. Childers; two daughters, Veronica Lynn Childers and Addie Marzec and husband, Richard of Ashland; two sisters, Nellie Pauline Hinkle and Robin Hicks of Ashland; four brothers, Ralph Justice, Edgar Justice II, Carl Justice and John Justice of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews include a special great-niece, Haley Hicks.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Dixon Cemetery by the Rev. Anthony Keaton. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.

Fern Gibbs Short - 1933-2009
Fern Short went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was the daughter of the late Ransom and Frankie Williams Gibbs. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Short Jr. and several brothers and sisters.
Fern was a homemaker and a member of the New Life Fellowship Church of Russell, Ky.
She is survived by two sons, Earl (Rita) Short and Craig (Teresa) Short of Wurtland, Ky.; daughters, Patricia (Dean) Hall of Rush, Ky., and Christine (Jack) Devore of Williamsport, Ohio; brother, Lon Gibbs of Pontiac, Mich.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods officiated by Bishop Henry Montgomery. Burial will be in Palmer Cemetery in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Smith H. Bayes Jr. - 1927-2009
Smith H. Bayes Jr., 82, of Flatwoods, Ky., passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
Mr. Bayes was born July 2, 1927, in Ashland, a son of the late Smith H. and Julia A. Grimes Bayes Sr. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Talva Irene Bayes in December of 1994 and a sister, Mary Bayes.
Mr. Bayes was a machinist for Rockwell and ACF, a Naval veteran of both WWII and the Korean War, then honorably discharged in 1952. He was a member of Smith Masonic Lodge F&AM; 775, DAV Chapter 24, American Legion Post 200 and First Baptist Church of Russell.
Survivors include four sons, Ronald (Andrea) Bayes of Palm Harbor, Fla., David (Johnda) Bayes of Catlettsburg, Ky., Bruce (Nenna) Bayes of Flatwoods and Kevin Bayes of Alexandria; two brothers, James “Jim” (Rose) Bayes of Lexington, Ky., and Edward Bayes of Eustis, Fla.; four sisters, Dorothy Lavoie and Eunice (Chuck) Quinn, both of Leesburg, Fla., Naomi “Nickie” Coyle of Eustis, and Joan Bayes of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, John (Kim) Bayes, Jennifer Bayes, Corey Bayes and Andrew Bayes; and one great-grandchild, Benjamin Bayes.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Russell officiated by Pastor Ken Gowin. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at the church. Honor Guard will be provided by Boyd County High School Naval Junior ROTC and American Legion James L. Flannery Post 276.

Hattie Leydeon Dickerson - 1915-2009
Hattie Leydeon Dickerson, 94, of Grayson, Ky., went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 27, 1915, in Carter County, Ky., the daughter of the late Claude and Hattie Bayes Waggoner.
She was a homemaker and a member of Hitchins Wesleyan Church, formerly known as Pilgrim Holiness Church, where she served as missionary chairwoman for four years, missionary treasurer for 18 years, deaconess for two years and Sunday school secretary for 43 1/2 years.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Dickerson; two daughters, Frances and Harriet Mullins; two sisters, Mae Rice and Lurene Caudill; and four brothers, Kenneth, Raymond, Everett and Leslie Waggoner.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda and husband Don Sparks of Ashland, Ky.; a son, Stanley and wife,Ruth Dickerson of Grayson; a brother, Milton Otis Waggoner of Ashland; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 14, 2009, at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson by George T. Smith and Dennis Romans, ministers. Burial will be in Waggoner Family Cemetery.

Ernest “Bud” Hunt, 82, of Raceland, died Friday in Wurtland.
He was born July 5, 1927.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Hunt Cemetery in Hall Ridge.

Nina Gwen Watkins, 62, of Worthington, formerly of Pikeville, died Thursday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.
