Delbert “Shorty” Sargent (1928-2009)

Delbert “Shorty” Sargent, 81, of Ashland, Ky., died Monday morning, Nov. 16, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born May 30, 1928, in Logan County, W.Va., a son of the late John Harve and Zola Dehart Sargent.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen D. Headley Sargent, in 2000; two sons-in-law, D.D. Fields and Melvin Lyons; brothers Clyde Sargent, James Sargent, Harvey Sargent and Robert Sargent; sisters Jewel Dehart and Beatrice Sargent; and grandchildren Mark Fields, Chris Evans and Mathew Parsons.

In 1948, he went to work as a bricklayer and allied craftsman and continued to work for 53 years until his retirement. He was a member of Hoods Creek Freewill Baptist Church since 1991 and a member of Brick Layers Local 7. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and very instrumental in the Babe Ruth fields, where he coached for many years.

Surviving are daughters Brenda Lyons of Graceville, Fla., Barbara Deloris (Wendell) Hall of Raceland, Ky., Linda Fields of Cannonsburg, Ky., and Pamela Sargent of Ashland; brothers Ervin (Erma) Sargent of Raceland and Dana (Pat) Sargent of Shallotte, N.C.; sisters Midge Collins of Roane, Ind., Gaynell (Johnny) May of Guyandotte, W.Va., Patty (David) Stevens of Mendon, Mich., Ellen Faye (David) Rice of Vicksburg, Mich., Janet (Joel) Long of Sunset Beach, N.C., and Rita White of Lumberton, N.C.; grandchildren Stephanie Klotzer, Jeff Frazier, Sandra Duvall, Jodi Ayres, Shawna Atkins, Misty Criswell and Krissy Adkins; and great-grandchildren Brendan Klotzer, Allie Taylor, Landen Duvall, Kyndall Duvall, Gaje Ayres, Ryan Atkins, Jodee Atkins, Hailey Hughes, Brooke Davidson, Avery Isaacs, Nikki Isaacs and Christopher Isaacs.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 19, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland with the Rev. Mike Sargent. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Betty Lou Hall Buckley

Betty Lou Hall Buckley, 60, of Ashland, Ky., died Nov. 14, 2009, in Blanton House in Grove City.

She was a member of Bridges Christian Church, the Ashland Retirees Group and OES. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Jenny Hall.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and John Metcalf of Grove City, Ohio; granddaughters Lindsay and Ella; a sister, Billie Rae Hall of Kentucky; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Bridges Christian Church, 1402 Kenwood Road, Russell, Ky., by the Rev. Joe Talley. Family will receive friends after 3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at The Church Ogle Cemetery in Louisa, Ky.

Beulah M. Taylor (1916-2009)

Beulah M. Taylor, 93, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in Logan Acres Care Center.

She was born March 17, 1916, in Ashland, Ky., the daughter of David and Damie Blankenship Davis, who preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Wright; her second husband, Paul Taylor; two brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois (Dennis) Douglas; a stepson, Douglas Taylor; grandchildren Gloria Douglas, Curtis Douglas, Kathy Godwin and Teri McIntire; stepgrandchildren Jeff, Doug, Steven and Stephanie Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Kevin F. Jennings Funeral Home in West Liberty, Ohio. Services will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home by Pastor A.W. Purdin. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery in West Liberty.



Bonnie Jean Peffer Phillips (1929-2009)

Bonnie Jean Peffer Phillips, 80, of Grahn, Ky., passed away Monday, Nov. 16 at her son’s residence.

Mrs. Phillips was born in North Dakota in 1929, the daughter of the late Alonzo and Ida Nicholson Peffer.

In her early years, Bonnie was employed at First National Bank of Grayson Ky., and later in the finance office of the VA Center in Dayton , Ohio.

She was a Christian and attended Garvin Ridge Wesleyan Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Paul Phillips, in 1999 and a brother, John N. Peffer, in 1996.

Bonnie is survived by the following loved ones: a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Elaine and Benny Oakley of Grahn; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Paul and Tammie Phillips of Grahn; four grandchildren, Mark Oakley and Amy Dillon of Grahn and Melinda Oakley and Mike Mosbey of Olive Hill and Allison Marie and Paul Spencer Phillips of Grahn; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Elaine and Hunter Dewayne Oakley; a sister, Carrie L. Layne of Grayson, Ky.; and two sisters-in-law, Naoma Phillips Lyons of Kettering, Ohio, and Camilla Phillips of Albany, Ga.

In addition to these, she is also survived by several nieces and nephews whom she also loved very much, many other relatives and a host of friends.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson by J.C Bond and Norman Carrico. Burial will be in Newell Cemetery in Grahn.

Merlin E. “Mert” Higgins (1922-2009)

Merlin E. “Mert” Higgins, 87, of Sandusky, Ohio, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 2, 2009, in Stein Hospice Care Center.

Mert was born June 11, 1922, in Sandusky, to the late Helen (Andres) and Edward Higgins. He had worked at Lyman Boat Works and then for the Scott Paper Co. before retiring in 1982 after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran who served during World War II.

Mert was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sandusky, a life member of American Legion Post 83 and a member of VFW Post 2529 and Knights of Columbus Council 546.

A loving husband and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Jean (Weingates) Higgins; sons Edward (Linda) Higgins of Lafayette, Ind., and Larry (Ann) Higgins of Ashland, Ky.; daughter Jean (Ed) Ryan of Bellevue, Ohio; grandchildren Jennifer Landes, Matthew Higgins, Andrea Higgins, Dr. Kristin Ryan, Timothy Ryan, Alissa Durbin, Amy Higgins and Kelly Higgins; great-grandchildren Sierra Goggin and Kameryn Durbin; brother Kenneth Higgins of Sandusky; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mert was preceded in death by sisters Dolores Krueger and Jeanette Landoll and brothers Lamont, Joe and Harold Higgins.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 5, 2009, at Groff Funeral Home, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky. A Mass of Christian Burial was Nov. 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 429 Central Ave., Sandusky by the Rev. David Nuss. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
