Mildred Corrine Kruck Davis (1917-2009)
Mildred Corrine Kruck Davis, beloved wife of Joseph Charles Davis, died Nov. 14, 2009, in Glenmoor Retirement Community in St. Augustine, Fla.
She was born Feb. 11, 1917, in Canton, Ohio, to the late Laura Mary (Hitz) Kruck and Edward Frank Kruck.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Gertrude Margaret Kruck, a sister of Notre Dame; her sister-in-law, Marie Agatha Davis; and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Ann (Williams) Davis, all of whom had a very special place in her heart.
Growing up in Canton, Ohio, Millie enjoyed a large, extended family of German and Swiss relatives. After attending St. Peter’s Grade School and Mount Marie High School, she enrolled at Canton Actual Business College, where she met her future husband, Joe, who survives. She and Joe were married at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Sept. 21, 1940. Prior to their marriage, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Catholic Community League. She and Joe lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Ashland, Ky. Joe was employed by the Ashland Oil and Refining Co., which was based in Ashland. They ultimately retired in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Millie was a devoted wife and mother. She and her husband, Joe, were happily married 69 years. With wit, wisdom, perseverance and most of all, love, she raised the following five children who survive: Susan Marie Davis Gooch, Joseph Edward Davis, Thomas Francis Davis (Mary Beth Hood), Sally Laura Davis and Amy Margaret Davis Nesfeder (Michael Robert).
Additional survivors who will cherish her memory and carry on her legacy are her grandchildren, Katrin Anne Gooch Gerig (J. Tyler), Lara Anne Gooch Mann (Nikolas Philip), Joel Anthony Gooch (Alison Sarah Glassman), Mark James Holmes (Tracey Ann Schmidt), Douglas James Holmes, Todd James Holmes (Mariko Inoue), Jennifer Marie Davis Geldhof (Eric James), Christopher Charles Davis, Amy Elizabeth Davis, Bryan Thomas Davis, Katherine Marie Davis, Emily Marie Antworth, Joseph Vinton Antworth, Daniel Richard Nesfeder, Mary Paige Nesfeder and Brett Michael Nesfeder.
Grace Noelle Gerig, Davis Michael Gerig, Samuel Louis Gerig, Elisabeth Davis Mann, Zoe Anton Mann, Hope Marie Mann, Carter Jonah Gooch, Taylor Charles Holmes, Allie Marie Holmes and Parker Joseph Geldof are Millie’s beloved great-grandchildren.
Millie’s focus in life was her church, family and friends. Additionally, she enjoyed bridge, golf, travel, gardening and flower arranging. Along with Joe, she hosted the family’s 38th annual reunion at Glenmoor in June 2009. Although she was very ill, she was able to attend the dinner where three new Davis baby boys, her great-grandsons, were officially introduced to the family. She continually exclaimed, “Look at those little dolls!”
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 28, 2009, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in St. Augustine. A private committal service will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Ponte Vedra Beach at a later time.

Helen Sparks (1930-2009)
Helen Short Sparks 78, of Ashland, formerly of Westwood, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, following an extended illness.
Helen was born Nov. 27, 1930, in Boyd County, to the late James and Laura Diamond Short.
She attended Westwood Wesleyan Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Sparks, and three sisters.
She is survived by a son, Cecil Boyd Sparks of Ashland; two daughters, Sherry Lynn Sparks of Ashland and Bertha Elaine York and her husband, Curtis, of Catlettsburg; three grandchildren, April (Jeff) Bond, Hank York and Jason York; and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at Kirby Flats Cemetery by the Rev. Charles Rice at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 20, 2009.

Jessie Belle Adams Barker (1925-2009)
Jessie Belle Adams Barker, 84, of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.
She was born April 12, 1925, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Jesse Adams and Mollie Eldridge Adams.
She was a homemaker and a member of Blackburn Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher.
Also preceding her in death was her husband, Ralph Barker Sr., on Sept. 19, 2006; a son, John Barker; and a daughter, Mary Crabtree.
Surviving are her children, William and Anita Barker of Ashland, Ella and Norris Suttles of Westwood, Ky., Sam Barker of Ashland, Ralph Jr. and Shateka Barker of Catlettsburg, Ky., Lois and Ray Sloan of Flatwoods, Ky., Brenda and Scot Moore of Worthington, Ky., and Linda and Steve Woods of Flatwoods; 24 grandchildren; and beloved great- and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Ron Riley. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Julius H. Mahar (1934-2009)
Julius H. Mahar, 75, of Ashland, Ky., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center following an extended illness.
Julius was born July 25, 1934, in Portland, Maine, a son of the late Floyd and Marguerite Robinson Mahar.
He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and a member of Holy Family Church and Ashland Elks Lodge 350 and enjoyed playing in the Allied Chemical Mens Golf League at Sandy Creek Golf Course.
Julius was also preceded in death by his wife, Jeannine Drown Mahar, in 2005.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin Mahar and wife Debbie of Midland, Mich., and Rich Mahar and wife Tammy of Ashland; four daughters, Julie Conant of Indianapolis, Ind., Lisa Heitsch and husband George of Commerce, Mich., Bernadine Mahar (Dan) of Seattle, Wash., and Mary Clark of Pinconning, Mich.; a sister, Eleanor Mahar of Rocky Hill, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Holy Family Church in Ashland, Ky. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Robert M. “Bob” Mitchell (1923-2009)
Robert M. “Bob” Mitchell, 86, of Russell, Ky., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Boyd County, Ky., the son of the late William Sherman and Martha “Kitty” Baker Mitchell. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a member of First Baptist Church of Cannonsburg and Ashland Elks Lodge 350. He was a Kentucky colonel and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Staley Mitchell.
Survivors include his wife, Ida Marie Daniels Mitchell; a son, Robert Kevin (Nancy) Mitchell of Columbus, Ohio; a grandson, Robert Scott Mitchell of Columbus; a stepdaughter, Jean (Sammy) Bowman of Ironton, Ohio; three stepsons, the Rev. David A. (Sandra) Estep of Harrisburg, Ill., Stephen Michael (Glenna) Estep of Sapulpa, Okla., and Ronald Day (LaTisha) Estep of Patterson, N.J.; and three brothers, James Mitchell of Winterpark, Fla., Russell Mitchell of Speedway, Ind., and Clarence Mitchell of Mooresville, Ind.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Stanley Williams. Entombment will be in Rose Hill Mausoleum.

Catherine Sue “Cathy” Hunt (1945-2009)
Catherine Sue “Cathy” Hunt, 64, of Worthington, Ky., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.
She was born in Ashland on Oct. 22, 1945, a daughter of Nettie Beatrice Paul Porter of Pittsburgh and the late Norman Russell Porter.
She was an employee of Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and a member of South Shore First Church of God.
Surviving are her husband, James E. Hunt, whom she married on Aug. 24, 1966; a son and his wife, Michael Lee (Devonda) Hunt of Summit, Ky.; two daughters, Melissa (Jay) Virgin of Oldtown, Ky., and Mindy Leanne Hunt of Flatwoods, Ky.; four brothers, Paul Porter of Winchester, Ky., and Wayne Porter, Donnie Porter and Brian Porter, all of Pittsburgh; three sisters, Phyllis Martin of Newport News, Va., Carole Beary of Atlanta, Ga., and Pamela Douglass of Pittsburgh; and two grandsons, Austin Tyler Hunt and Brian Ray Hunt.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at South Shore First Church of God on Main Street by the Rev. Tim Cole. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.

Virgil Dale Hunt (1944-2009)
Virgil Dale Hunt, 65, of Greenup, Ky., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, Ky.
He was born in Greenup County, Ky., on Aug. 16, 1944, a son of the late Nollie Hunt and Myrl McFarland Hunt.
He was a retired carpenter and construction worker.
Surviving are a daughter, Paula Hunt Lunsford of Hull, Ga.; a granddaughter, Jordan Leigh Lunsford of Hull; two brothers, Ralph Hunt of Greenup and Ray Hunt of Greenville, S.C.; and two sisters, Olive Polly of Roanoke, Va., and Pearl Tollier of Stockdale, Ohio.
Also preceding him in death were a brother, Denver Hunt, and two sisters, Ruth Mullins and Myrtle Bays.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Long Cemetery in Greenup by the Rev. Douglas Virgin.

Marjorie Arnett Kelly (1934-2009)
Marjorie Arnett Kelly, 75, of Greenup, Ky., went to be with the Lord and reunited with her two best friends, Eunice Gillispie and Fannie Collins, on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Kelly was born Sept. 25, 1934, at Halo, Ky., a daughter of the late Fred Caudill and Dwella Burke Caudill Hall.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Carl Arnett; a brother, Freddie Caudill; a stepsister, Areta Guseman; a stepbrother, Junior Hall; her stepfather, Bennie Hall; and a great-grandson, Clarence William Henry III.
She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Teresa and Rick Sutton of Grayson, Ky.; four sons and their wives, David and Anne Arnett of Parma, Ohio, Jeff and Della Arnett of Wurtland, Ky., Greg and Diane Arnett of Greenup and Steve and Sue Arnett of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother, Glenn Hall of Lexington, Ky.; a sister, Imogene Knipp of Louisa, Ky.; a stepbrother, Clark Hall of Akron, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23 at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Brother Danny Brown. Burial will be in Hall Farm Family Cemetery on Alcorn Road in Greenup.

Thomas Clinton Lewis
Thomas Clinton Lewis of Greenville, Ky., died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at the age of 88.
Tom was the beloved husband of the late Mary Alice Lewis (nee Goolsby); devoted father of Lucyanne Streitenberger and Tom (Rana) Lewis; and the proud grandfather of Grant and Krista Lewis and Lori Sturgeon and great-grandfather of Ryan Roja.
Tom is also survived by a sister, Velma Lane of Flatwoods, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Tom was preceded in death by his parents, F.R. and Julia Lewis; brothers Edward and Robert; and grandson Michael Christian.
Tom graduated from Russell High School in 1939, served as a USAF pilot in World War II and retired from the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources after 20 years of service.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23 at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Verna Mae Stanley (1924-2009)
Verna Mae Stanley, 85, of Grayson, was graciously taken home by her Lord on Nov.17, 2009, in Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson.
She was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Ray Roscoe Riffe and Maggie Gillispie Riffe.
Mrs. Stanley was a lifelong member of Wilson Creek Baptist Church and retired from Cinderella Fashions in Ashland.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Stanley, in 1992; a brother, Ray Riffe Jr.; and a sister, Parthea Shaffer.
She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Lynn (Gypsie) Stanley of Louisville, Ky., and Randell Ray (Lynn) Stanley of Grayson; a daughter, Dottie (Richard) Easterling of Grayson; and five sisters, Irene Conley of Leesburg, Fla., Myrtle Smith of Ashland, Mabyn Hopkins of Ashland, Jeany Angel of Ashland and Patricia Ann Prichard of Grayson. In addition, she is survived by five grandchildren, Jeffrey Lynn Stanley II, Shayne Easterling, Crystal Schrecker-Jones, Julianne Sanders and Abigail Stanley.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 20, 2009, at Wilson Creek Baptist Church by Jim Varney and Jo Ed Rice. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Jack Douglas McKinney (1942-2009)
Jack Douglas McKinney, 67, of Grayson, went to be with his heavenly father, whom he so adored, on Wednesday, Nov. 18 following a brief illness.
Jack was born Oct. 20, 1942, in Hitchins, a son of the late Walter and America Wells McKinney.
He was a husband, father and a minister of the word of God. A U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam, Jack accepted the call to preach in 1979. He was a former pastor of the Hilltop Community Church in Lewis County, Lower Stinson Community Church and Coalton Community Church. He retired from Armco Steel in Ashland in 2004 after 37 years, working most recently in the shipping department. He was a member of the Grayson Volunteer Fire Department since 1991, where he served as chaplain. He was also a member and chaplain of the Carter County Firefighters Association and the Eastern Kentucky Firefighters Association and a member of the National Federation of Fire Chaplains. He received the Firefighter of the Year award from the Grayson Area Chamber of Commerce in 1993. He was a member of Grayson Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the church advisory board. An avid lover of God, he was always ready to proudly proclaim the glory of the Heavenly Father.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Annette McKinney; a brother, Paul McKinney; and a sister, Nora Jean DeHart.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Yvonne Easterling McKinney; a daughter, Jami Horton of Grayson; a granddaughter, Kristin Horton; four brothers, Frank McKinney of Princess, Woodrow McKinney of Ashland, Ed McKinney of Rush and Ray McKinney of Summit; three sisters, Mandy Gullett of Coalton, Leona Rucker of Ashland and Kathleen Gollihue of Grayson; his church family; and a host of friends and loved ones.

Calvin Douglas Fannin (1958-2009)
Calvin Douglas Fannin, 51, of Carter City, Ky., passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 10, 1958, in Carter County, Ky., a son of Naomi Stallard Fannin of Columbus, Ohio, and the late Rubert Howard Fannin Sr.
Mr. Fannin was a 10-year employee of CSX Railroad, where he worked as a carman welder, and was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of Olive Hill Masonic Lodge 629 and was a Shriner.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Rubert Howard Jr. and Vicki Lynn Fannin of Olive Hill; a niece and nephew, Lacy Faye Fannin and Jordan Chad Fannin, both of Olive Hill. He also leaves several other extended family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill with Brother Bill Burnett and Brother Russell Bud Burnett. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Olive Hill.

The Rev. Curtis Martin Riley, 59, of Newport, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009.
He was pastor of Bybee United Methodist Church. He was former pastor of Pleasant Valley, Catons Grove, Jones Chapel and Mulberry Gap United Methodist Church in Tennessee and many churches in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruby Riley.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Riley of Newport; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Amber Riley of Columbus, Ohio, and Chris and Lisa Hudson of Elliott County, Ky.; a daughter, Lisa Riley of Ashland, Ky.; daughters and son-in-law, Lisa and Mike Herbst of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Kimberly and Allesandro Menozzi of Reggo Amelia, Italy; a brother and sister-in-law, John (Joe) and Jeannie Riley of Ashland; sisters and brother-in-law Anita and Willy Townsend and Pam Riley, all of Ashland; grandchildren Ava and Griffin Riley, Brook and Nikie Gee, Beau Riley, Charlie Hudson, Audry Mefford, Kelsy and Jordan Herbst; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Bybee United Methodist Church in Bybee, Tenn., with Dr. Mickey Rainwater officiating.
The family will receive friends after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Sunshine United Methodist Church in South Shore, Ky., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m.
