Homer B. “Burk” Moore Jr. (1947-2009)

Homer B. “Burk” Moore Jr., 62, of Homosassa, Fla., formerly of Ashland, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Cancer Treatment Centers of American in Philadelphia.

He was born Feb. 17, 1947, in Ashland, the son of the late Homer B. Sr. and Martha Shephard Moore. He was retired from AK Steel as the Union Safety Director and currently employed by TIE Construction as their safety coordinator. Homer was past president of the Ashland Area Labor Council for more than 20 years, past president of the Kentucky Health and Safety Network and a recipient of Kentucky Labor Management Safety Manager of the year award. He served on numerous committees at the Kentucky Labor Cabinet in Frankfort, a former board member of the Ashland Alliance and the United Way, a U.S. Marine veteran, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Homosassa.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Brickey Moore; a daughter, Sherri (Shawn) McKinney of South Point; a son, David (Shannon) Lewis of Townsend, Del.; three stepsons, Jeff (Jenny) Walters of Ashland, Greg (Jane) Walters of Burlington, N.C., and Joe (Leah) Walters of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two brothers, William T. “Bill” Moore of Ashland and David M. Moore of Charleston, S.C.; five grandchildren, Samantha Lewis, Katie Walters, Lindsey Walters, Grant Walters and Paige Walters; and one great-grandchild, Peyton Moore.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by pastor Kenny Estep. Entombment will follow at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Military services will be by the Kenova American Legion Post 93.

James Ray Woods (1954-2009)

James Ray Woods, 55, of Rush, died Nov. 18, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Mr. Woods was born June 4, 1954, in Russell, a son of the late Leo and Edna Gay Woods.

He was a carpenter for the Northeast Kentucky Area Development Council.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Lou Carter Woods; three sons, James Anthony Wireman of Tennessee, Adam McKenzie Woods of Greenup, Jordan Andrew Woods of South Shore; a daughter, Samantha Raye McKenzie of Greenup; two stepdaughters, Sarah Renee Tussey of Warnock and Chrystal Dawn Howard of Wheelersburg; a sister, Brenda Meadows of Greenup; five brothers, Roger Woods of Flatwoods, Herman Woods of Raceland, Ricky Woods of Chicago, Ill., Ervin Woods of Garrison and Leo Woods of Sidney, Ohio; nine grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

Edwina Joyce England (1930-2009)

Edwina Joyce England, 79, of Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Mrs. England was born Oct. 12, 1930, in Danleyton, a daughter of the late James and Edna Bates Gillum. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Russell England; four brothers; Charles, Donald, James and Bill Gillum; and a grandson, Rusty England.

Mrs. England was a homemaker, wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother and attended Pentecostal Holiness Tabernacle and Community Tabernacle.

She is survived by a son, Scott and Sheila England of Ashland; a daughter, Donna England of Ashland; Uncle Fred Bates of Flatwoods; Aunt Mary Alice Riffe of Wurtland; three grandchildren, Gary, Jonathan Tyler and Jeremy England and two great-grandchildren, Jonathan Russell England and Tyler Braxton England.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Lloyd L. Bailey. Burial will be in Bates Cemetery in Happy Ridge.

Viewing will be Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.



Nixola Kiser Roe (1924-2009)

Nixola Kiser Roe, 85, of Olive Hill, went home to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon, Nov. 19, 2009, at her residence.

She was born June 8, 1924, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Culie and Katherine Conley Kiser.

Mrs. Roe was a homemaker and has been a Christian for more than 63 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Talmage E. Roe; a son, Jimmie Wayne Roe; one grandson, Roy Daniel Roe; five brothers, Terry Kiser, Shorty Kiser, George Kiser, Truman Kiser and Norman Kiser; and three sisters, Oney Reynolds, Jean Raybourn and Brenda Kay Kiser.

Her survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Brenda Roe, Roy and Amanda Roe all of Olive Hill, and Gary and Kathy Roe of Greenup; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Brad Fuller, Nixola and Michael Giles, Lonnie and Ronita Roe, Kristy Roe, Andrea and Joe Carhart; six great-grandchildren; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Dennis Kiser, Phillip and Barbara Kiser all of Olive Hill, Jim Kiser, Tony and Lula Belle Kiser all of Alliance, Ohio; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sylvia “Wee” Maggard of Alliance and Sue and Ernie Wells of Worthington. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, other family members and friends that will sadly mourn her passing.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Globe Funeral Home in Olive Hill with brother Jimmy Barker and Brother Bobby Day officiating. Burial will follow in the McKinney Cemetery in Olive Hill.

Friends may call until the service hour Sunday at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, family suggest contributions be sent to Community Hospice Care Center, 2330 Pollard Ave. Ashland, KY 41101.

Edna Karol Bivens (1941-2009)

Edna Karol Bivens, 68, of Tick Ridge in Wheelersburg, died Thursday at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.

She was born Jan. 12, 1941.

Graveside services were Friday at Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore. Morton Funeral Home in South Shore was in charge of arrangements.



James E. Helton

James E. Helton, 79, of Lloyd, died Saturday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.

Arrangements are pending at Wright’s Funeral Home in Greenup.



Ronald Kenneth Middleton (1949-2009)

Ronald Kenneth Middleton, 60, of Elliott County, died Thursday at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

He was born July 12, 1949.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Globe Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will follow in Mauk Cemetery in Elliott County.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Gerald “Goose” Roark, 65, of Olive Hill, husband of Judith Roark, died Saturday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

Diana Joy Berry (1956-2009)

Diana Joy Berry, 53, of Grayson, died Wednesday in Brown County, Ohio.

She was born July 4, 1956.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at Oney-Henderson Funeral Home in Olive Hill. Burial will follow in Biggs Hill Cemetery in Grayson.

Agnes A. Stephenson (1926-2009)

Agnes A. Stephenson, 82, of Vanceburg, died Friday at Golden LIving Center in Vanceburg.

Ms. Stephenson was born Nov. 21, 1926, and she was the widow of John Henry Stephenson.
