Edith E. Herman - 1930-2009
Edith E. Herman, 79, of Ashland, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at her residence. She was born Nov. 17, 1930, in Ashland to the late Harry McKnight Sr. and Hazel Ousley McKnight. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Ray Herman, preceded her in death.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy McKnight; and two sisters, Goldie Cramer and Freda Emminizer.
Surviving are two sons, Ray Herman of East Jordan, Mich. and Randy (Donna) Herman of Va.; a daughter, Joyce Herman of Springfield, Va.; two brothers, Harry (Eulah) McKnight Jr. of Calif., and Billy McKnight of Ashland; a sister, Shirley Stanley of Ashland; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There are no services scheduled at this time. Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland is in charge of arrangements.
Nelson E. Walker - 1929-2009
Nelson E. Walker, 80 of Westwood went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
He was born July 11, 1929, in Greenup County, the son of the late John and Ella Hyden Walker. He retired from Allied Chemical/AK Steel Coke Plant. He worked there for 37 years as a RC Local Operator. He served two years in the U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954. He also served on the KYOVA GMA Board of Directors and attended Ironville Independent Baptist Church. He enjoyed praising and serving the Lord through gospel music.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jauwan "Bobby" George Walker.
He is survived by his two daughters, Carol Boyd and Debbie (Tim) Church, both of Ashland; one sister Nella Shelton of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one special sister-in-law Wanda Waggoner; four grandchildren Missy (Phillip) Hager, Heather Messer, Jon (Robin) Church, Jason Boyd; three great grandchildren, Zach Messer, Austyn Church, and Ryleigh Church; and several loving nieces and nephews, and a large family of brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Thorny Artrip, Perry Young and Ed Richardson. Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Mausoleum, with military services conducted by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Friends may call Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the service on Sunday.
Pallbearers will be Jason Boyd, Jon Church, Jimmy Kazee, Emory Stambough, Josh Brewer, Tim Church and Travis Ferguson.

Shirl Sutton - 1927-2009
Shirl Sutton, 82, of Ashland, passed away suddenly on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009. He was born in Boyd County on Feb. 2, 1927, to the late Greene and Lula Howard Sutton.
Shirl was a graduate of Boyd County High School and he served our country as a Navy seaman in World War II. He retired from Armco Steel in 1989 and enjoyed a love of farming and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joy Taylor Sutton; his daughter, Shirleen (Paul) Maynard of Catlettsburg; his son, William T. Sutton of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Molly Maynard, Brookley Maynard and Valerie (Derik) Kearns; and three brothers, Joe Sutton of Jacksonville, Fla., J.T. Sutton of North Huntingdon, Pa. and Wayne Eugene Sutton of Lexington.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Troy Poff, pastor of Centenary United Methodist Church, where Shirl attended. Interment will be in Ashland Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. and until the service time on Friday.

John Gordon Dyer Jr. - 1982-2009
John Gordon Dyer, Jr. 27, of Ashland, KY, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at Norton Hospital in Louisville. John was born April 9, 1982 in Ashland, a son of John G. Dyer of Ashland and Kim and Fred Harris Jr. of Flatwoods. He attended Christ United Methodist Church and was a 2000 graduate of Fairview High School. He attended the University of Louisville and was presently a student at Ohio University Southern. He was active in the Flatwoods and Ashland Babe Ruth Baseball League, the Catlettsburg Little League, and the Adult Summer League Baseball program.
Surviving in addition to his parents include one brother, Steve Dyer of Flatwoods; paternal grandparents, Henry and Barbara Dyer of Ashland; maternal grandparents, Arnold Sexton Jr. and wife Judy, of Flatwoods, Marjorie Sexton of Ashland; maternal great-grandmother, Garnet Sexton of Ashland; stepbrothers, Lee Harris of Ashland and Nathan Harris of Lexington; stepsister, Sarah Mattingly of Crittenden; an uncle, Jerry Dyer of Ashland; and a great-uncle, Roger Dyer of Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Ken Gowin, and the Rev. David Gross. Burial will be in the Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Diane Harris Alexander - 1951-2009
Diane Harris Alexander died Monday at her home in Greenup County.
She was born Nov. 17, 1951, in Erwin, Tenn., to Murldean Stover and the late Herbert Harris. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, Rachael Copley of Ashland, and the late Charles Copley, along with her cousins Chuck (Jo) Copley and Janie Copley, whom she considered her siblings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron Alexander and two stepdaughters, Rhonda Nelson and Goldia Moore.
Survivors include her children, Shawn Edward (Debbie) Black of Florence, Jamie Preston Black of Lexington, Tawnee Lynn Messer of Catlettsburg; and a stepson, Garland Alexander; five grandchildren, Conner, Chloe and Carson Black of Florence and Lucas and Jacob Messer of Catlettsburg; and one sister, Glenda Glass.
Funeral will be at noon Friday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with the Rev. James Webster officiating.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon.
Snowy Brooke Hall - 1991-2009
Snowy Brooke Hall, 18, of Grayson on Nov. 23, 2009, in the blink of an eye was carried by Angels to dwell in the House of the Lord forever. She was born Sept. 19, 1991, in Morehead. This wonderful and beautiful girl was the daughter of Johnny Lee and Cloma Jean Elliott Hall of Grayson.
She is also survived by her brother, Johnny Gene Hall; sister-in-law, Christa Gearhart of Ashland; brother, Michael Lee Hall of Grayson; sister, Kristy Dawn Thompson; brother-in-law, Jeremy Thompson; nephew, Austin Thompson; niece, Alexis Thompson all of Grayson; her grandparents, Lowell and Jewell Elliott of Grayson; her closest aunts and uncles, Loretta and Ernie Hall of Hitchins, Lowell and Angel Elliott of Grayson, Joe Hall and Florence Fryer, both of Ashland; her closest cousins, Tabitha Stewart, Rebecca Hall, Kyle McCowen, Trey and Quincy Elliott, Keelee and Isabelle Stewart; and many other family members near and far; her beloved boyfriend, David Guilds and his family, Peggy, Doug, Dillon and Morgan Guilds, all of Willard; her closest friends, Shelby Mullins, Megan Horton, Ashley Boyles and hundreds of others.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Henry Hall, great-grandparents, Otto and Belle Steele and Sylvia Sparks.
Snowy was a member of the Iron Hill Missionary Baptist Church and attended college in Ashland. Her goal was to be a registered nurse. She had already accomplished being a state registered nursing assistant and was working at Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayson. She dearly loved her family, friends and her job taking care of people. She had the care and compassion to have made a wonderful nurse. There just are no words for how much we love and miss her. To our greatest sorrow, God only allowed us the joy of having her with us a very short 18 years.
Funeral services for Snowy will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with Lowell Elliott, Eddie Barker and David Guilds officiating. Burial will be in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Irene Martin Robinette, 89, of Ashland died Monday at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington.
She was born Oct. 11, 1920, in Ashland.
Her husband, Howard Robinette, preceded her in death.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dorsel H. Lowder, 90, of South Shore died Tuesday at South shore Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born Jan. 21, 1919 in Quincy.
His wife, Helen Stone Lowder, preceded him in death.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Quincy, with military graveside rites by th James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 of South Shore.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. and until the funeral time at the funeral home.

She was born May 29, 1927, in Laura.
Her husband, Ezra Fraley, preceded her in death.

Bonnie Reatha Hamlin, 85 of Ellijay, Ga., died Saturday at her home.
She was born Sept. 2, 1924, in Vanceburg.
Her husband, Grimes Harrison Hamlin, preceded her in death.
Funeral will be at noon Saturday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Ribolt.

George Russell Applegate - 1946-2000
George Russell “Peanut” Applegate, 63, of Vanceburg died Saturday at Hospice Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth.
He was born April 3, 1946, in Vanceburg.
Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery with military graveside rites by the VFW Monte Lewis Stamm Post 5438.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg.
James Carlton LeCompte - 1934-2009
James Carlton LeCompte, 75, of Louisa died Sunday.
He was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Arlington, Va.
His wife, Ernestine LeCompte, survives.
