French D. Maggard - 1939-2009
French D. “Frenchie” Maggard, 70, of Ashland passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, after a battle with mesothelioma. He was born in Westwood on May 20, 1939, to the late James Tivis (J.T.) and Letha Wright Maggard.
Maggard was a demolition specialist in the United States Army, stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany, and was also a member of the National Guard. After serving our country, he worked as a bricklayer at AK steel for 34 years. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America and the International Union of Bricklayers.
Maggard was an active member of Rose Hill Baptist Church for 30 years, serving as a deacon and visiting with widows through the Widows Ministry program. He was also a member of the Greenup Baptist Builders, constructing wheelchair ramps for many in need. He was dedicated to helping youth in the community, serving on the Rose Hill Christian School Board for 15 years, and volunteering at both the Ramey Home and the Boys Group Home. Maggard also volunteered at the Ashland Community Kitchen and was a frequent blood donor, giving over 32 gallons to the American Red Cross in his lifetime.
In addition to helping those in need, Maggard loved fishing, especially with his grandchildren. He was an avid gardener, and often shared his bounty with neighbors and friends. He was a man with a special talent for fixing things, and loved to help friends and family with their projects. His favorite hobby later in life was camping with his wife and their beloved dog, Trixie.
In addition to his parents, Maggard was preceded in death by his brother, Jesse Maggard. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Shirley Maggard; brothers, Frank Maggard and Tivis (Donnie) Maggard of Ashland, and Ray (Melanie) Maggard of Hamilton, Ohio; two sons, Randall Maggard of Catlettsburg and Ronald (Lynne) Maggard of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and a special niece, Teresa Williams of Catlettsburg, who helped care for him during his illness. He will also be greatly missed by his four grandchildren, Annie, Brad, Kevin and Taylor Maggard.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Ronnie Mayes and Dr. Charles Stewart. Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood, with military graveside rites by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Pallbearers will be deacons of Rose Hill Baptist Church and honorary pallbearers will be members of Smokey Ingram’s Men’s Sunday School Class.

Bronston Logan - 1947-2009
Bronston Logan, 62, of Wurtland went to be with the Lord with his family by his side on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. He was born June 13, 1947, in Kehoe, a son of the late Elwood and Allie Hall Logan.
Bronston was retired from General Telephone Company in Greenup after 29 years of service. He worked as a “Go-For” for River Cities Builders in Greenup and was a member of the Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church. He was a United States Army veteran.
He also was preceded in death by one brother, Billy H. Logan; one granddaughter, Lyndsi Suzanne Haas; and his stepmother, Lillian Logan.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Donna Enyart Logan; two daughters, Debbie Logan (Lloyd) Haas of Newark, Ohio, and Allison Logan of Wurtland; one brother, Bob (Jewell) Logan of Leatherwood; four sisters, Betty Lewis-Snyder of Morehead, Janet (Curt) Johnson of Lloyd, Georgiann (Jr.) Kautz of Morehead and Carol Plummer of West Portsmouth, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Judy Logan of Lloyd; and four grandchildren, Logan Depriest, Zachary Haas, Remington Haas and Kennedy Logan.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Wurtland Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Vallance. Pallbearers will be Greg Logan, Steve Logan, Byron Plummer, Charles Keith Hall, Robert Bonzo, Michael Bonzo, Mark Lewis, Rodney Logan and a special pallbearer, Logan Depriest.
Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, with military graveside rites by the James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 in South Shore.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup and one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.

Harold Voiers, 96, of the Homestead Nursing Home in Lexington, formerly of Vanceburg, died Wednesday at the nursing home.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Vanceburg ChristianChurch. Burial will be in Lewis County Memory Gardens in Black Oak.

Nickey Horton, 75, of Sandy Hook died Wednesday at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.
His wife, Bonnie Bowling Horton, survives.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Waddell & Whitt Funeral Home in Sandy Hook. Burial will be in the Bowling-Todd Cemetery at Neal Howards Creek.
Visitation will be after 5 pm. today and anytime until the service hour at the funeral home.
Cynthia Frasure - 1924-2009
Cynthia Mae Music Frasure, 85, of Prestonsburg died Wednesday at Riverview Health Care Center.
She was born April 7, 1924.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bonanza Freewill Baptist Church. Burial will be in Frasure Cemetery on Abbott Cr. Road.
