Mildred Mae Keeton Barber - 1918-2009

Mildred Mae Keeton Barber, 91, of Ashland, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. She was born Aug. 30, 1918, in Salyersville to the late Warren Preston Keeton and Ida May Rice Keeton.

She was a housewife and a member of Holy Family Church and DAR. She was a former member of Westwood Homemakers Club, Rotary, Roadrunners and Lady Lion. She volunteered for years at the KDMC gift shop and community kitchen. She was a member of several bridge clubs and graduated from Ashland High School in 1936, where she remained a member of the 36th club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. “Mike” Barber Sr. She is survived by a son, Michael J. “Mike” Barber Jr. and his wife Nikki of Paintsville.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Holy Family Church by Rev. John P. Noe. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Church, 900 Winchester Ave. Ashland, KY 41101.

Esther Naomi McGranahan - 1934-2009

Esther Naomi McGranahan, 75, of Ashland, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in Oakmont Manor in Flatwoods. She was born April 23, 1934, to the late Walter Caldwell and Layla Williams. She was raised by her grandparents, Cantas and Alice Williams.

She was the former owner of Giovanni’s in Catlettsburg and attended Crum Chapel Church.

She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas McGranahan; and a brother, Ed Caldwell, Jr.

Surviving are a son, Willis Keith McGranahan of Ashland; four daughters, Kathy Runyon of Flatwoods, Ruth Murphy of Inverness, Fla., Anita Williamson of Homosassa, Fla. and Karen Williams of Floral City, Fla.; a sister, JoAnn Simpson of Ashland; and 7 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Crum Chapel Church by Pastor Bill Smith. Interment will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from noon until the time of service Monday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Oakmont Manor Nursing Home, 1100 Grandview Drive Flatwoods, KY 41139.

Ernest E. Yates - 1924-2009

Ernest E. Yates, 85, of Ashland, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center. He was born May 6, 1924, to the late Rev. Rod Yates and Blanch Neal Yates in Johnson County, Ky. His wife, Louise Yates, preceded him in death.

He retired in 1989 as the owner and operator of Yates Wrecker Service and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Fred Yates.

Surviving are a son, Robert Yates and wife Brenda of Catlettsburg; a daughter, Tootie Howard and husband David of Willow Wood, Ohio; three grandchildren, Joey Yates, Tina Adams and Teresa Preston; 6 great-grandchildren; a brother, Hershel Yates of Fla.; and a sister, Thelma Whites of Mich.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Chuck McCormick. Interment will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hazel Hamilton Dye - 1915-2009

Hazel Hamilton Dye, 94, of Ashland, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, in Ashland Community Hospice Care Center. She was born Aug. 4, 1915 in Floyd County, Ky. to the late John Hamilton and Elizabeth Robinette Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clell Dye.

Hazel was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She attended Ashland Kingdom Hall where she was an outstanding example of undeterred faithfulness in the ministry.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Edward Evans; brothers Charles Hamilton and Ervin Hamilton; stepbrothers, Luther Evans, Estel Evans, Delmar Evans and Fred Evans; and stepsisters, Myrtle Evans Robinette and Mabel Evans.

She is survived by niece and nephew, Beth and Philip Hamilton of Minnie, Ky.; cousins, Ronald and Shelby Robinette of Prestonsburg, Ky.; a sister-in-law, Glenith Rowena Evans of Fischer, Texas; nephews, Shane Evans of Fischer and Paul Vernon Martin of Raton, N.M.; grandnephews, Jacob Evans of Bastrop, Texas, Michael Johnson of Idaho Springs, Colo. and Timothy Johnson of Idaho Springs; and a niece-in-law, Brenda Evans of Greenville, S.C.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Steen Funeral Home, 1501 Central Avenue in Ashland with Joseph C. Monnett officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call an hour before services at the funeral home.



Susan Hardeman - 1970-2009

Susan Woods Moore Hardeman, 39, of Catlettsburg, passed away Friday afternoon, Dec. 4, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was born Oct. 17, 1970 in Louisa, and was the daughter of Clifford P. Woods, his wife Pamela of Ceredo, W.Va. and Ellen W. Cyrus and a very special stepfather, Tom Cyrus, of Catlettsburg.

Susan was raised in Catlettsburg, went to school at Catlettsburg Elementary, Catlettsburg Junior High and graduated from Boyd County High School in 1988. Her first job was at Catlettsburg Dairy Cheer at age 16. By age 18 she was doing temp office work and data entry. She was hired full time at Catlettsburg Federal Savings and Loan as a mail clerk. She worked her way up to loan office and eventually Branch Manager. Later, she was also employed at EZ Mortgage Loans Inc. Susan was a faithful member of 39th Street International Pentecostal Church of Christ in Ashland. She was active in Sunday School, VBS Youth and Ladies Ministries.

Susan was the loving wife of Scott Hardeman and proud mother of two fantastic boys, Drew Moore, age 20, and Shane Hardeman, age 8. Susan considered her greatest accomplishment to be accepting Christ as her Savior and mothering her boys.

Also left behind are two brothers, Steven Woods and his wife Sonya of Catlettsburg and Scott Woods and his wife Penny of Grayson.

To remember Susan, a service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastors Cline McAllister and Rick Ratliff will bring a heartfelt eulogy. Final rest will be at Golden Oaks Memorial Garden.

Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Susan’s personal request was that contributions be made to Community Hospice, 1538 Central Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101, a testament of her unselfish heart and giving spirit.



Russell Painter Jr. - 1926-2009

Russell P. “Grandad” Painter Jr., 82, of South Shore, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born Dec. 21, 1926, in Johnstown, Ohio, to the late Russell P. Painter Sr. and Blanche M. Cramer Painter.

He was retired from McGinnis Inc. and was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Vietnam, where he retired from the Army as a Command Sargent Major. He was a member of James Flannery Post 276 American Legion in South Shore.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Ebersbach Painter; and a brother, Robert Painter.

Surviving are children, Sheila Ballard of Columbus, Ohio, Russell E. Painter of Ashland, Debora M. Painter of Winchester, Ky. and Robin L. Thomsen of Edmund, Okla.; a brother, Ralph Painter of Middleport, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Rauch of Newark, Ohio and Dorothy Brown of Chester, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Morton Funeral Home in South Shore. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery with military graveside rites by James Flannery American Legion Post 276.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Robinson “Rob” Minix

Robinson “Rob” Minix, 79, of Salyersville, died Friday.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Magoffin County Funeral Home.

Glen Trosper Sr. - 1935-2009

Glen Trosper Sr. of Ft. Gay, W.Va., died Friday at Three Rivers Medical Center in Louisa. He was born Aug. 6, 1935, in Genoa, W.Va. His wife, Eloise Trosper, preceded him in death.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Young Funeral Home Chapel in Louisa. Burial will be in Robertson Cemetery on Route 1 in Ft. Gay.

Anthony Lee Smith - 1993-2009

Anthony Lee Smith, 16, of Vanceburg, died Friday in a vehicle accident at the intersection of Hwy 59 and Hwy 9. Hwy was born May 3, 1993, in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Dickerson Funeral Home in Vanceburg. Burial will be in Bloomfield Cemetery in Grassy, Ky. at Dummitt Branch Road.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

W. H. Rudd - 1942-2009

W. H. Rudd, 67, of Maytown, died Saturday in Morgan Co. ARH. He was born June 30, 1942, in Maytown. He was the husband of Ruth Perry Rudd.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in McGuire Cemetery in Maytown.

Deborah Kinner - 1957-2009

Deborah Kinner, 52, of Grayson, died Friday at her residence. She was born Sept. 25, 1957, in Grayson. She is survived by her husband, Larry W. Kinner.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Burial will be in Buchannan Chapel Cemetery.

Patricia Daniels Pendleton - 1946-2009

Patricia Daniels Pendleton, 63, of Catlettsburg, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was born Oct. 4, 1946, in Boyd County. Her husband, Bill Pendleton, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Madalin F. Jones Simmons - 1928-2009

Madalin F. Jones Simmons, 81, of Waverly, formerly of Portsmouth, died Thursday in Southern Ohio Medical Center Hospice in Portsmouth. She was born Jan. 4, 1928 in Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chesley Simmons.

There will be no visitation. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore, Ky. is in charge of arrangements.
