Jo Ann Roberts (1929-2009)
Jo Ann Roberts of Ashland, Ky., died Monday evening, Dec. 7, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center following a sudden illness. She was the widow of J. Bryan Roberts, who died six months ago.
She was the daughter of the late Dewey and Sola Boyd Roberts of Harold, Ky. She was a graduate of Betsy Layne High School, where she was valedictorian, and the Ashland School of Commerce. She taught a year at the Sammy Clark Branch School (a one-room school) on Little Mud Creek in Floyd County.
Jo Ann was a dedicated Christian and a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. She served as secretary of Chuck Stewart’s Sunday school class and had not missed attending church in nearly nine years.
She and her late husband were saved and baptized at Leach Station Baptist Church many years ago. They previously attended Pollard Baptist Church.
Jo Ann is survived by a sister, Herma Lee Roberts Skeens (William) of Barboursville, W.Va.; a brother, Charles Walters (Madge) of Hamilton, Ohio; a niece, Vicki Cartmel (Thomas) of Catlettsburg, Ky.; a nephew, Dr. Michael Skeens (Joyce) of Ona, W.Va.; great-nieces Amanda Cartmel and Katelynn (Justin) Menshouse of Catlettsburg, Suzi (Jason) Smith, Jackie (Jeremiah) Elkins and Jennifer Skeens, all of Ona; a great-nephew, Clinton Skeens of Ona; brothers-in-law Harry Gene Roberts (Betty June) of Baton Rouge, La., and Franklin Roberts (Virginia) of Glencoe, Mo.; sisters-in-law Allene Roberts of Lexington and Vanceburg, Ky., Jackie Roberts Tucker of Georgetown, Ohio, Shirley Roberts Sloas (Leonard) of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, and Nell Roberts Crooks of Ashland; and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Funeral services will be at noon Friday, Dec. 11 at Rose Hill Baptist Church in Ashland by Brother Chuck Stewart and Dr. Ronnie Mays.
Visitation will be an hour before services at the church. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland.

Barbara Rice (1937-2009)
Barbara Ann Hall Rice, 72, wife of Arnold Rice of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, following an extended illness.
Barbara was born April 26, 1927, in Westwood, to the late Steril and Clara Bell Price Hall.
She retired from the food service department of King’s Daughters Medical Center and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Hall; and two sisters, Dottie Singer and Nola New.
Survivors include her husband, Arnold Rice of Ashland; a son, Michael Rice and his wife, Donna, of Ashland; a daughter, Terri “Susie” Keeton, and her husband, Danny, of Ashland; a brother, Larry Hall of Ashland; and four grandchildren, Megan Rice, Matthew Rice, Corey Keeton and Jillian Keeton.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by Donald Damron, pastor. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.

Kathleen Fugitt (1930-2009)
Kathleen Fugitt, 79, of Ashland, Ky., formerly of Louisa, Ky., died Tuesday evening, Dec. 8, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.
She was born June 24, 1930, in Chapman, Ky., a daughter of the late Benson Ray and Myrtle Chapman Fugitt.
She was a teacher of home economics at Vashti Methodist School for two years in Thomasville, Ga., and for a year at the Erie School in Olive Hill, Ky. She worked at Ashland Oil in the business department for several years and completed her career with the Department of Human Resources for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Ashland, a graduate of Louisa High School Class of 1948 and a graduate of Asbury College, with an AB degree in education.
Surviving are brothers Charles Ray (Linda C.) Fugitt of Nicholasville, Ky., and Bobby Glen (Anna W.) Fugitt of Ashland; nieces Melissa Humphrey, Julia (Don) Schultz and Carol Fugitt; great-niece Emily Schultz; and great-nephews Matthew Schultz and Joshua Fugitt.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at Christ United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Moore. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery in Louisa.

Evelyn V. Wells (1944-2009)
Evelyn V. Wells, 65, of Westwood, Ky., died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born Nov. 4, 1944, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Jesse Adams and Mollie Eldridge Adams Walters.
In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Wells, in 2008 and several brothers and sisters.
She was a retired cook with Ashland Oil-Marriott with 25 years of service. She was a member of Blackburn Avenue Baptist Church and the VFW and Eagles, all of Ashland.
Surviving are two sons, James E. Wells and Timothy E. Wells, both of Westwood; two daughters and a son-in-law, Paulette (Rusty) Clark of Princess, Ky., and Tammy S. Wells of Westwood; four grandchildren, Steven D. Wells, Britney D. Wells, Kayla R. Wells and Alan J. Tacket; a great-grandson, Christopher N. Wells; a brother, Clell Ray Adams of Ironton, Ohio; and a sister, Betty Nash of Brunswick, Ohio.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home in Ashland by Brother Leroy Dixon. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Donald Cole (1932-2009)
Donald Cole of Whites Creek Road, Catlettsburg, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 8, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland.
Mr. Cole was 77 years of age, born Jan. 31, 1932, in Morgan County, Ohio, a son of the late Herbert and Leota Webb Cole.
Also preceding him in death was his loving wife of 52 years, Juanita Rogers Cole. Don was an employee of Columbia Gas for 46 years and a Kentucky colonel. He loved his farm and cattle and was of the Baptist faith.
Donald leaves behind two sons, Donald Cole and his wife, Kay, of Catlettsburg and Harold Cole and his wife, Cindy, of Nitro, W.Va.; four grandchildren who loved their “Pops“ very much, Sarah (Rob) Brandenburg, Matt Cole, Russ (Amanda) Cole and Steven Cole; two precious great-grandchildren, Chloe and Mia Brandenburg; and a brother, James (Barbara) Cole of Kenova, W.Va.
To honor the life of Donald Cole a funeral ceremony will be Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home on Panola Street in Catlettsburg. Words of comfort will be offered by Minister Wayne McDonald and Pastor Mike Blankenship. Final rest will be in Bowling Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 10 at the funeral home.
Freeman Woodrow Abdon (1913-2009)
Freeman Woodrow Abdon, 95, of Load, Ky., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, in Wurtland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wurtland, Ky.
Mr. Abdon was born Dec. 31, 1913, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Charles Cleveland and Lucy Johnson Abdon.
Mr. Abdon was a member of the Globe Church of Christ.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ida Claro Archey Abdon; three brothers, Ted Abdon, Glen Abdon and Clyde Abdon; a sister, Josephine Burns; and a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Juanita Abdon.
He is survived by three sons, Jerry Abdon of Load, Marshall (Teresa) Abdon of Lloyd, Ky., and Danny (Patty) Abdon of Load; a daughter, Connie (Talmage) Mabry of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Roy (Carol) Abdon of Greenup, Ky.; two sisters, Louise Kegley of Troy, Ohio, and Vilean (Joe) Bradley of Portage, Ind.; 13 grandchildren, Michelle Light, Todd Abdon, Chris Abdon, Angela Bloomfield, Katrina Craig, Lynette Rulen, Greg Abdon, Pamela Mabry, Heather McDowell, Andrew Abdon, Dana McCleese, Anthony Mabry and D.J. Abdon; and 16 great-grandchildren.
