Berneta Joan “Jo” Morrison - 1938-2009

Berneta Joan Morrison, 71, of Westwood, Ky., died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12, 2009, at her home following an extended illness.

Jo was born July 26, 1938, in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late Hartford and Nancy Margaret Brown Nunley.

She was retired from the food service industry and was of the Pentecostal faith. Jo was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and devoted companion to her dog, Precious. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a son, Michael Anthony Whitt.

Surviving are three daughters, Joetta Lynn Lee and husband, Rudy of Ashland, Ky., Monica Irene Corns and husband, Jim of Franklin, N.C., and Gail Louise Blanton and husband, Bo of Rush, Ky.; two sons, Donald Lewis Nunley and wife, Sue of Grayson, Ky., and John Wayne Whitt and wife, Jeanell of St. Augustine, Fla.; two brothers, Philip Nunley and wife, Lydia, and James Nunley and wife, Jewell of Grayson; two sisters, Doris Barr and husband, Marshall of Mount Washington, Ky., and Evelyn Warden and husband, Ed of Springfield, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at noon, Thursday, Dec.17, 200,9 at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by Pastor Bob Burnett of Grayson Church of God. Burial will be in the Cribbs Hill Cemetery.

Bette Margaret Thompson - 1925-2009

Bette Margaret Thompson, born Nov. 30, 1925, in Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Thompson Jr.; infant son, J.C. Thompson III; parents, J.R. and Ida Mae McKenzie; and brothers, William and Marshall McKenzie.

Surviving are daughters, Suzanne (William) Bogdan, Nancy Wolske and Jan Elizabeth Thompson; and by much loved grandchildren, Joe and Meg Wolske, of whom she was very proud; siblings, Bobbe (Jim) Stapleton, Miriam (Homer) Meadows, Jane McPeek, Beth (Guy) Adams, Dale (Kim), Paul (Dede), Jim (Linda), Tom (Ruby), John (Cindy, and Stephen McKenzie, and Vicki (Jeff) Lovins; father’s widow, Clara Mae McKenzie; and many nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

Private services will be at a later date with inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery.

Dr. Daniel Frederick “Dan” Daniel - 1944-2009

Dr. Daniel Frederick “Dan” Daniel, 65, Southwestern College emeritus professor, died Dec. 13, 2009, in Edgewood, Ky.

Dan Daniel was born Jan. 17, 1944, in Columbus, Ohio, to L. Marshall and Ruth Murray Daniel. He graduated from high school in Ashland and earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature at Berea College in Berea, Ky. He earned a master’s degree at the University of Chicago and a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin.

Dan came to Winfield in 1970.

He taught English literature at Southwestern College for 39 years until retiring April 1, 2008. Dan was an early supporter of “Jan-Term” at Southwestern, when short courses and field trips were offered between semesters. He was the originator in 1992 of an integrated studies program for freshmen and sophomores. That program gained national attention and was adopted by other colleges.

Dan developed a strong interest in the interconnectedness of fields of knowledge. In 1998, he and Reza Sarhangi co-founded the Bridges Conference on connections between mathematics and art. The conference continues; its 2009 site was Banff Center, Canada.

A lover of Shakespeare, Dan was active in Shakespeare on the Walnut in Winfield. He acted in several Winfield Community Theatre productions, including the lead in “The Dresser.” Dan was an avid fan of the Walnut Valley Festival, locally known as the “Bluegrass.” He and his former wife, Kathy, led the crafts at the festival for five years.

Dan did postdoctoral work at the University of Kansas and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He traveled abroad frequently, visiting England, India, China, Morocco and the Soviet Union, among other countries.

In the 1980s, Dan wrote a weekly column for the Winfield Daily Courier.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth, in February 2004.

He is survived by his daughter, Rachel Daniel Green, and her partner, Lorrie Green of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; and a grandson, Joshua Daniel Green, also of Lawrenceburg.

Dan’s father, L. Marshall Daniel, 93, Ashland, also survives, as do a sister, Marsha Muir, and her husband, Don of Bel Aire, Md., and a brother, Steve Daniel, and his wife, Sally of Virginia Beach, Va.

Dan’s former wife, Kathy Docherty of Berea, also survives. A niece, Dawn Marie Frost of Williamsburg, Va., and nephews, Chris Daniel and Brian Daniel of Virginia Beach, survive as well.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at 39th Street Baptist Church, 732 39th St., Ashland, Ky. Minister Mike Saunders will officiate. Burial will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland and Thursday at 10 a.m. until service time at the church.

Leo Dean “Sugar Foot” Pinchin Sr. - 1917-2009

Leo Dean “Sugar Foot” Pinchin Sr., 92, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 in Oakmont Manor Nursing Home.

He was born June 20, 1917, in Crown Point, N.Y., a son of the late Clarence Pinchin and Addie Pinchin.

His wife, Maxine Kazee Pinchin; and two sons, Clifford Pinchin and Leo Dean Pinchin Jr., also preceded him in death.

He was a retired guard with Armco Steel with 27 years of service. He was a Navy veteran, and a member of First Christian Church of Christ and Ceredo-Kenova American Legion Post 93.

Surviving are a very dear friend, Frances Rayborn of Ashland; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip Pinchin and Debbie of Arizona; a daughter, Jennie Cantrell of Ashland; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at noon Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Stanford G. Hacker - 1937-2009

Mr. Stanford G. Hacker, 72, of South Shore, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 at his residence.

He was born Oct. 2, 1937, in South Portsmouth, Ky., a son of the late Pete Hacker and Louella Thompson Hacker.

He was a retired employee of the North American Refractory of South Shore, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving is his wife, Frieda Timberlake Hacker, to whom he married Feb. 24, 1958.

Preceding him in death was one brother, Jimmy Hacker.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore by the Rev. Bob Taylor. Burial will be in Collier Memorial Gardens in South Portsmouth.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight and from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour Wednesday at the funeral home.



Gladys Irene Lacks - 1926-2009

Gladys Irene Lacks, 83, of Worthington, went to be with the Lord and her awaiting husband on Dec. 14, 2009.

She was born in Ashland, Ky., on Oct. 26, 1926, to the late Walker and Essie Gue Akers.

She was a retired quality inspector for Owens Illinois Glass Factory and was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her husband, Clarence and parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Thelma Nippert and Norma Young; and a great-grandchild, Cassie Daniel.

Surviving are five children, Kenny Lacks (Carol) of Worthington, Ky., Veralyn Eyermann (Bob) of Ashland, Brenda Daniel (Terry) of Worthington, Keith Lacks (Trish) of Raceland, Ky., and Cindy Lacks of Worthington; nine grandchildren, Joe Hale of Palm Bay, Fla., Mike Lacks of Worthington, J.R. Daniel of Ashland, Jon Hale of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Brian Daniel of Flatwoods, Susan Lacks Ison of Worthington, Renee Lacks of Raceland, Tim Lacks of Worthington and Chris Lacks of Raceland; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Shirley Barney of Zephryhills, Fla.; and a special caregiver, Lana Thompson of Ironton, Ohio.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods by the Rev. Paul Neal officiating.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.



Martha Ellen Griffith Rucker - 1917-2009

Martha Ellen Griffith Rucker departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Neil Shinaberry of Mount Gilead, Ohio.

She was born June 30, 1917, to the late Obie H. and Celia Belle Stewart Griffith in Webbville, Ky. She was the oldest of five children; three of whom preceded her in death, Oda Griffith Harrison, Obie E. Griffith and Roy E. Griffith. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Thornton Rucker; one daughter, Barbara Rucker Fleming; son-in-law, Harold Fleming; and a beloved grandson, Ryan Neil Shinaberry.

A life-long resident of Webbville, she married Thornton Rucker on July 16, 1938, and made a home with him that brought into this world eight children; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Martha was a homemaker and former teacher’s aide with Webbville Elementary and was a member of the Cherokee Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by seven children, Bethel Rucker of Centerville, Ohio, Roy Rucker of Webbville, Agnes Adams of Mount Sterling, Ky., Regina Reiser of Phoenix, Ariz., Tim Rucker of Ona, W.Va., Rita Shinaberry of Mount Gilead and Doug Rucker of Fort Thomas, Ky. She is also survived by one brother, William Griffith of Globe, Ky.

Her warm smile, heart-felt chuckle, and love for all will be deeply missed.

Funeral services for Martha Ellen will be held Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson with David Boggs, minister. Burial will be in the Webbville Cemetery.

Larry Michael Fannin - 1953-2009

Larry Michael Fannin, 56, of Fallsburg, Ky., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, with his loving family by his side.

Michael was born March 29, 1953, in Louisa, Ky., the son of Wanda Queen Fannin and the late Roy Fannin. He was a Calgon Corp. employee with the maintenance department. He served as former fire chief for the Fallsburg Fire Department, was a member of Northeastern Fish & Wildlife Trap Shoot Division, Sexton Trap Shoot Club, Fallsburg Bass Club, the Broken Arrow Archery Club and was a huge fan of the Lawrence County Bulldog football team.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Mackie Shortridge Fannin; a daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina and Jason Fyffe of Louisa; a son and daughter-in-law, Dustin and Julie Fannin of Louisa; a brother, Rick Fannin of Shepherd Branch; and five grandchildren, Sailor Fyffe, Jase Fyffe, Paisley Fyffe, Payton Fyffe and Zowie Fyffe.

Rev. Gordon Crisp will conduct funeral services at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilson Funeral Home in Louisa. Burial will follow in Adkins Cemetery on Chapel Road in Louisa.

Myrtle L. Ferguson Anglin, 89, of Morehead, died Sunday at home.

She was born June 7, 1920.

Her husband, James Anglin, preceded her in death.
