John Philip Meeks - 1939-2009

John Philip Meeks, 70, of Westwood, Ky., husband of Chiquita Gabbert Meeks, died Thursday morning, Dec. 17, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital following an extended illness.

John was born Aug. 26, 1939, in Ashland, Ky., a son of the late Acie and Faye Conn Meeks.

He was a retired clerk with the U.S. Postal service in Ashland and was a U.S. Army veteran. John was preceded in death in addition to his parents by a brother, Roger A. Meeks.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Wesley Meeks and Philip Meeks, both of Westwood; a daughter, Julie Horne of Plant City, Fla.; a sister, June Kay Allred of Anniston, Ala.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2009 at Preston Family Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Mike Rice. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Burial Park.

Visitation is Monday from 11 a.m. until service time.

Mary Carolyn Sturgill - 1939-2009

Mary Carolyn Sturgill, 70, of Fort Collins, Colo., passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, in Fort Collins.

The Ironton, Ohio, native was born April 10, 1939, the daughter of the late Aaron and Edna Johnson Saunders.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Darvin Sturgill, whom she married Aug, 15, 1958, at Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Lawrence County, Ohio

She was a 1957 graduate of Rock Hill High School, where she was class valedictorian. She served her community in school PTAs, as a Sunday school secretary and teacher, on church committees and church choirs. She was a former employee for Ashland Oil and Refining Co. beginning in 1957 and quitting in 1960 to raise a family and returned to work for Ashland Oil in 1977. She went on disability in 1992 and retired in 2004 with a total of 30 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stephen Saunders.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Margaret Sturgill of Fort Collins; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn and Andy Sartain of Galloway, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Natalia Sturgill, Aaron Sartain and Louis Sartain.

A memorial gathering will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009 at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. 7th St., Ironton, Ohio.

Alberta Duncan

Alberta Louise (Rucker) Duncan, 84, of Ashland, died Friday in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Rev. Gordon Duncan.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Steven Dyer II - 1975-2009

Steven Harris Dyer II, 34, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday in Fort Myers.

He was born Oct. 3, 1975, in Ashland.

His wife, Tabitha Lowe Dyer, survives.

John Tipton Jr. - 1946-2009

John W. Tipton Jr., 63, of Catlettsburg, died Friday in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Catlettsburg.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Neal Funeral Home in Catlettsburg. Committal will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home.



Raymond Hanshaw

Raymond Hanshaw, 86, of Wurtland, died Friday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

His wife, Earline Collier Hanshaw, survives.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Carman Funeral Home in Flatwoods with Masonic service at 7 p.m. by Greenup Masonic Lodge 89.



Richard Hopkins - 1957-2009

Richard A. Hopkins, 52, of Olive Hill, formerly of Columbus, Ohio, died Sunday in Olive Hill.

He was born Dec. 28, 1957, in Mansfield, Ohio.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date in North Carolina.

There is no visitation.

Jackie Bartley - 1947-2009

Jackie D. Bartley, 62, of Lake Panasoffekee, Fla., formerly of Mount Sterling, died Thursday in Lake Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.

He was born May 2, 1947.

His wife, Daisy Bartley, survives.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Spruce Church of God in Jeffersonville. Burial will be in Machpelah Cemetery in Mount Sterling.

Norita Corn - 1933-2009

Norita Vivian Corn, 76, of Ironton, died Thursday in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital.

She was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Ironton.

Her husband, John D. Corn, survives.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Calvary Cemetery.

There is no visitation.

Juanita “Needy” Norris - 1920-2009

Juanita “Needy” Norris, 89, of Ironton, died Wednesday in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

She was born Feb. 3, 1920, in Williamsport, Md.

Her husband, Albert Norris, preceded her in death.

The funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens in South Point.
