Alice Joyce Williams (1930-2009)

Alice Joyce Williams, cherished wife and beloved mother, passed away Dec. 18, 2009. Joyce was born Dec. 1, 1930 in Lynch, Ky. to Squire Franklin Nelson and Suda Delph Nelson. She graduated from Ashland High School, attended Virginia Intermont College and graduated from the University of Kentucky. She was married to Alfred J. Williams for 57 years, and in that time she blossomed into a skilled gardener and a truly gifted artist. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church.

Mrs. Williams was nationally recognized for her watercolors. She received over 145 awards, including Gold Metals from American Watercolor Society, Guild of Boston Artists and Knickerbocker Artists, New York. She has 32 solo exhibitions and sat on the board of directors of the American Watercolor Society, eventually achieving lifetime member status. Her work is included in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the country and she is listed in the Who’s Who in American Art and American Women in the Arts. She shared this great talent through instruction and in 2007 donated a generous portion of her collection to the Kentucky Highlands Museum in Ashland, Ky.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband Alfred; her two sons, Steven Alfred and Michael Franklin and their wives; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Nelson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Reverend Charles E. Stewart.

Alberta Louisa (Rucker) Duncan (1925-2009)

Alberta Louise (Rucker) Duncan, 84, of Ashland, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, in Kingsbrook Lifecare Center in Ashland. She was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Hillsboro, Ohio to the late Sanford B. and Ettie May McDowell Rucker. Her husband, Rev. Gordon Duncan, preceded her in death.

She worked at the cosmetics counter at Parsons Department Store, was a cashier at Sears and assisted in ministry with her late husband. She was a member of the Summit Missionary Baptist Church.

She was survived by four sons, William Duncan of Seattle, Wash., Michael Duncan of Knoxville, Tenn., Stephen Duncan of Fredericksburg, Va. and Mark Duncan of Richmond, Ky.; two daughters, Fonda Miller of Flatwoods, Ky. and Gina Barbour of Danville, Ky.; two brothers, Carl Rucker of Waco, Texas and James Rucker of Hopkinsville, Ky.; a sister, Ruby Carroll of Louisville, Ky.; and 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel in Ashland by Reverend Jack E. Edwards. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel.



James V. Powers (1934-2009)

James V. Powers, 75, of Ashland, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, in the Hospice Care Center. He was born March 8, 1934, in Ashland to the late Fred and Ida Layne Powers. He was retired from the Federal Correctional Institution and was a former employee of Tri-State Terminals. He was a member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church for 40 years, sang in the choir for 20 years, taught a Boys Sunday School Class for 10 years, and was a Kentucky Colonel and a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Glenna Baker Powers; two daughters, Cathy L. (Rusty) Jewett of Clearwater, Fla. and Laura B. (Tim) Black of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two sons, Timothy D. (Lisa) Powers of the U.S. Army stationed in Kuwait and James L. (Mary) Powers of Ashland, Ky.; a brother, Robert H. (Lucille) Powers of Baltimore, Md.; ten grandchildren, Doug Powers, Nick Powers, Katie Snyder, Aaron Black and Jonah Black; five great-grandchildren, Darby Powers, Tucker Donahue, Colt Powers, Bailey Powers, Adyson Powers and a greatly anticipated great-grandchild baby Snyder due in May.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by Dr. Ronnie L. Mayes. Entombment will follow at the Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

John W. Tipton Jr. (1946-2009)

John W. Tipton Jr., 63, of Catlettsburg, passed away Friday morning, Dec. 18, 2009, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. He was born Dec. 9, 1946, in Catlettsburg, the only son of the late John W. Sr. and Beulah Holbrook Tipton. He was a graduate of Catlettsburg High School and Marshall University where he received a BA in Business Administration. He was an auditor for over 25 years with The Kentucky Revenue Cabinet. John enjoyed reading, was a member of Boyd County Democratic Women’s Club and was of the Methodist Faith.

John leaves behind two children, a son, Tony Tipton; his wife, Kristen, of Barboursville, W.Va.; and a daughter, Tammy Ball and her husband Steve of Catlettsburg. Papaw Johnny has three beautiful grandchildren, Frankie age 9, Colin age 8 and Kelsey age 5.

A solemn funeral service to remember John Tipton will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Neal Funeral Home on Center Street in Catlettsburg. Pastor Charles Allen will offer an uplifting message of comfort. Final rest will be in Golden Oaks Cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and an hour before service time Tuesday at the funeral home.



Penny Wittwer (1946-2009)

Penny Wittwer, 63, of Harrodsburg, died Friday at her home. She was born Feb. 4, 1946, in Ashland.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.

Freda L. Church Nichols

Freda L. Church Nichols, 75, of Commercial Point, Ohio, formerly of Greenup, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Glenda Spillman, in Kingston, Ohio.

Vivian Aileen Fairchild

Vivian Aileen Fairchild, 70, of Oil Springs, died Friday in Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Michael David Newkirk

Michael David Newkirk, 37, formerly of Oil Springs, died Wednesday in Highland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel in Paintsville. Burial will be in Hannah Family Cemetery in Swamp Branch.

Roberta Wells Davidson of Prestonsburg will have a funeral service at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church.

Loretta M. Akers (1952-2009)

Loretta M. Akers, 57, of Allen, died Saturday in the Prestonsburg Nursing Facility. She was born Aug. 21, 1952, in Fostoria. She is survived by her husband, Mackie J. Akers.

Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the Hall Funeral Home Chapel in Martin. Burial will be in the John Akers Family Cemetery in Dana.



Dorothy Dixon Schroyer

Dorothy Dixon Schroyer, 91, of Paintsville, died Friday in Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center.

Marion Willodean Collins Perry (1925-2009)

Marion Willodean Collins Perry, 84, of Morehead, died Friday at his residence. He was born July 23, 1925.

Edna Opal Sanders (1916-2009)

Edna Opal Sanders, 93, of Ironton, died Thursday in Jo-Lin Health Center in Ironton. She was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Ironton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Sanders.

Paul Edwards (1943-2009)

Paul Edwards, 66, of Ironton, died Thursday at his residence. He was born Nov. 22, 1943. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kay Edwards.

Malissa B. Sizemore (1923-2009)

Malissa B. Sizemore, 86, of Ironton, died Friday at Hospice Care Center in Ashland. She was born Feb. 26, 1923. Her husband, Orville C. Sizemore, preceded her in death.
