James V. Powers (1934-2009)
James V. Powers, 75, of Ashland, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, in the Hospice Care Center. He was born March 8, 1934, in Ashland to the late Fred and Ida Layne Powers. He was retired from the Federal Correctional Institution and was a former employee of Tri-State Terminals. He was a member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church for 40 years, sang in the choir for 20 years, taught a Boys Sunday School Class for 10 years, and was a Kentucky Colonel and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Glenna Baker Powers; two daughters, Cathy L. (Rusty) Jewett of Clearwater, Fla. and Laura B. (Tim) Black of Catlettsburg, Ky.; two sons, Timothy D. (Lisa) Powers of the U.S. Army stationed in Kuwait and James L. (Mary) Powers of Ashland, Ky.; a brother, Robert H. (Lucille) Powers of Baltimore, Md.; ten grandchildren, Doug Powers, Nick Powers, Katie Powers, Emily Powers, Ben Jewett, Madison Jewett, Michael Powers, Kayla (Aaron) Snyder, Aaron Black and Jonah Black; five great-grandchildren, Darby Powers, Tucker Donahue, Colt Powers, Bailey Powers, Adyson Powers and a greatly anticipated great-grandchild baby Snyder due in May.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by Dr. Ronnie L. Mayes. Entombment will follow at the Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Steven H. Dyer II (1975-2009)
Steven H. Dyer II, 34, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, in Ft. Myers, Fla. He was born Oct. 3, 1975, in Ashland, Ky. He was the son of Steven Harris Dyer of Ashland and Ava Browning Hall of Greenup, Ky.
Stevie was a 1994 graduate of Boyd County High School and attended Cumberland University and ACTC. He was a fiberoptics installer and welder. He was a member of the Heritage Freewill Baptist Church in Cannonsburg, Ky.
Stevie enjoyed fishing, motorcycling, camping, football, basketball, working and spending time with his family and friends. He belonged to the Faternal Order of Eagles and the Sons of the American Legion. He had a special zest for life and a smile that lit up the room. He loved the elderly and friends’ children and was looking forward to being a dad.
Steven was preceded in death by his grandmother, Rosemary Dyer.
Surviving are his beautiful wife, Tabitha Lowe Dyer and his precious daughter, Stevie Ann Dyer, born Dec. 16, 2009. Other survivors include his uncles, Drexel O. Dyer, John B. Dyer and Jeff (Amy) Dyer, all of Ashland, and Richard (Pat) Dyer of Christmas, Fla.; his aunts, Sally Dyer, Linda Dyer and Mary Ann Dyer (Sis), all of Ashland; his cousins, JR (Courtney) Floyd, Andrea Dyer, Terry Dyer, Adam (Brandy) Dyer and the fudge makers Ellen Robinson and Ann Hensley.
Stevie will be deeply missed by his family and a multitude of friends across the country. He will be forever in our hearts.
Funeral services will be at noon Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Lazear Funeral Home Chapel in Ashland by Rev. Tim York and Rev. Edd Cook. Interment will be in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Albert H. “June” Lake Jr. (1938-2009)
Albert H. “June” Lake Jr. of Ashland, Ky. died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at his residence. He was born June 24, 1938, in Ashland, Ky. to the late Albert H. Lake Sr. and Ada Conley Lake. He was the co-owner of Bluegrass Truck and Automobile Alignment and an avid Ashland Tomcat Football fan who had not missed a game for 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Louis Young and Rose Buckland.
Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Clark Lake; two sons, Don Lake and his wife Teresa and Steve Lake, all of Ashland; two grandchildren, Dawn Loree Distel and her husband Eric and Madison Lake, all of Ashland; five sisters, Laura York of Worthington, Ky., Jennie Neal of Cleveland, Ohio, Nellie Griffith of Ashland, Wanda Erwin of Catlettsburg, Ky., and Sharon Lake of Ashland; and a special niece, Debbie Cook of Ashland.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Ashland Cemetery by Shane Cox. Burial will follow at the cemetery.

Jerry Wayne Porter (1949-2009)
Jerry Wayne Porter, 60, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, in Brunswick, Ga. He was born in Ashland, Ky. on Dec. 8, 1949, to the late Marie (Blevins) and Leslie E. Porter. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He retired as the bowling alley manager at the Athletic Club of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Porter and his best friend, Michael Aleshire.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Porter of Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Donna M. (Adrian) Porter of Columbus; four grandchildren and one great-grandson; sisters, Sandy Isbell and Judy (J.D.) Young; and a brother, Kenneth Elwood (Janet) Holbrook.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 4501 Hoover Rd., Grove City, Ohio, with Pastor Peter Ray officiating. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Washington Cemetery in Washington Court House, Ohio.

Hershal McIntyre (1939-2009)
Hershal McIntyre, 70, of Berea, Ky., formerly of Ashland, Ky., passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 19, 2009, in the VA Hospital in Berea. He was born Feb. 14, 1939, in Boyd County, Ky. to the late Charles Herbert Sr. and Thelma Clark McIntyre.
He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps and was a member of Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles H. McIntyre Jr. and Marvin Edgil McIntyre; and two sisters, Ellen Stephens and Gloria Fields.
He is survived by three sisters, Minnie (Allen) Tomlin, Loretta Pennington and Saundra (Drexel) Blanton, all of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009, by Rev. Raymond Stephens at Caniff Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Michael DeWayne Criswell (1970-2009)
Michael DeWayne Criswell, 39, of Louisa, Ky., went to be with his Lord on Friday, Dec. 18, following a sudden illness. He was born Oct. 7, 1970, in Lawton, Okla., to Larry M. and Berneita Gene Troutman Criswell.
He was a loving father and son, and a member of the Chadwicks Creek Misisonary Baptist Church where he played and sang in the Chadwicks Creek Boys Bluegrass Gospel Band. He was the owner and operator of Coal Sled Trucking in Louisa.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife, Nicole Ball Criswell; his parents, Larry and Geanie Criswell of Catlettsburg, Ky.; children, Jordan Nicole and Brett Michael Criswell, both at home; a sister and brother-in-law, Shelley and Virgil Eversole of Harlan, Ky.; two nieces, Emma and Avery Eversole. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Luke Matthew Criswell.
Rev. Chuck McCormick, Rev. Sean Mayenschin and Rev. Harold Matheny will conduct his funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Chadwicks Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the East Carter Memorial Gardens in Grayson, Ky.

James Archie Jim Carroll (1937-2009)
James Archie “Jim” Carroll, 72, loving husband of Lois Burton Carroll for 53 years, passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 20, 2009, at his residence in Olive Hill, Ky. He was born Jan. 23, 1937, in Carter County, Ky. to the late Kenneth Edward Carroll and Lottie Laura Smith Carroll.
Jim graduated from Prichard High School in Grayson, Ky. in May, 1955. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in June, 1955, serving in the U.S. and Japan. He completed his three year enlistment as SP2 (E-5). He worked for a short time as an apprentice machinist at Armco Steel in Ashland, Ky. He was employed by General Adjustment Bureau for 13 years and Cincinnati Insurance Company for 25 years as an Insurance Claims Adjuster in Ill., Ohio, Ind. and Va. He was also employed as a Licensed Funeral Director for 8 years with the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson.
Jim was an ordained Baptist Minister serving churches in Ill., Ohio, Ind., Va. and Ky. He was active in associational Christian Work in Ind., Ohio and Va. He was an active member of the Bedford, Va. Breakfast Lions Club, serving as secretary for 8 years, Vice President and President. He was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and was selected Adjuster of the Year by the Lynchburg Claims Association, where he served as Association President.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Sherman and Vada Burton; his paternal grandparents, Arch and Bessie Carroll; his maternal grandparents, James T. and Alice Smith; and a brother-in-law, Larry Riffe.
Jim is survived by his wife, Lois Burton Carroll; four sons, Daniel Thomas of Evansville, Ind., John Anthony (Julie) of Carmi, Ill., Charles Robert of Olive Hill, Ky. and James Matthew of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, Kenneth Edward Jr. (Edna) Carroll of Raceland, Ky.; two sisters, Donna Sue Riffe of Argillite, Ky. and Sharon Kay Buyalos of Cornelius, N.C.; two granddaughters, Samantha Carroll Robinson and Jessica Carroll; seven grandsons, three great-grandsons, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Ky. by Jim’s son Charles Robert Carroll and Keith Robinson. Burial will follow in the Burton Family Cemetery in Olive Hill, Ky. with military rites conducted by the East Carter JROTC.

Raymond Hanshaw (1923-2009)
Raymond Hanshaw, 86, of Worthington, Ky., passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009. He was born Jan. 29, 1923 in Wurtland, Ky. to the late Eli Preston (Fred) Hanshaw and Beulah Walker Hanshaw.
He was an Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II serving as a member of the 443rd Bombardment Squadron. He was a retired yard conductor for the C&O; Railroad with 45 years of service. Raymond was a former Mayor and council member for the City of Wurtland. He was past president of the Wurtland Band Boosters and a member of Greenup Lodge 89 F & AM. He was also a member of The Wurtland Union Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, J.B. Bridges; a daughter, Linda Lou Hanshaw; and an aunt, Daisy Walker.
Surviving are his wife, Earline Collier Hanshaw; a son, Earl Ray Hanshaw; a daughter, Ramona (John) McComas, all of Worthington. Also surviving are grandchildren Jhonda L. McComas and John R. McComas.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky. Officiating will be Dr. Tom Melvin.

Freda L. Nichols (1934-2009)
Freda L. Nichols, 75, of Commercial Point, Ohio, formerly of Greenup, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Kingston, Ohio. She was born March 15, 1934, in Flatwoods, Ky. to the late Coral and Ella Marie Short Church.
She is survived by her children, James Robert (Margaret) Nichols Jr. of Commercial Point, Danny (Glora) Nichols of Frankfort, Ohio and Glenda (Jeff) Spillman of Kingston, Ohio; six grandchildren, Lisa (Jason) Wiseman, Jeffy Spillman, Danny (Chris) Nichols, Trisha (Shawn) Pollard, Russell Nichols and Crystal Nichols; five great-grandchildren, Dorothy, Little Shawn, Chelsea, Justin and Joshua; two sisters, Sue Sears of Columbus, Ohio and Ruth (Glenn) Porter of Worthington, Ky.; a special niece, Christina Harris; and special friends Franny Martin, Dorothy Brown, Marcus Fullen and Martha Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Nichols; three brothers, Robert “Bob” Church, Carmen “Hank” Church and James Edward Church; and three sisters, Delilah “Dottie” Tipton, Blanch Osborn and Jean Collins.
Freda was a loving, generous person and was loved by so many people. She was a friend to many, “Grandma” to most every child who met her and “Mom” to more than her own children. She lived a selfless life and gave the world the gift of God, which is love. Our loss is certainly Heaven’s gain. As we weep, all of Heaven rejoices as Freda looks upon the face of God and says, “Thank you Jesus!”
