Patricia “Patty” Houchen Johnson Justice (1938-2009)
Patricia “Patty” Houchen Johnson Justice, passed away in Community Hospice Care Center on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009.
She was born Jan. 8, 1938, in Austin, Ind., to Cecil and Louise Houchen, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Oren Justice, M.D.; a brother, Terry (Runell) Houchen of Glasgow, Ky.; her children, Sherri (Donald) Johnson Kelly, Bryan (Maria) Johnson, J. Wesley (Karin) Johnson II, DVM and Elaine (Steve) Corbitt and her beloved grandchildren, Madeline, Kacie, Stephen, Alexandra, Taylor, Lily, Grace, Leighton and Anna Caryl. Also surviving are her stepsons, Daniel (Tona) Justice and Allen (Amy) Justice and the father of her children, J. Wesley (Phyllis) Johnson, M.D.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Patty loved life. She was a registered nurse graduating from the Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Louisville, Ky. She was adventurous as she was petite. She rode in a hot air balloon and went soaring in Arizona, sailed in the Caribbean, snow skied in the Rockies and drove the roads of Ireland, Scotland and England. She sang soprano and played saxophone. But most of all, she loved her family and her community. She was scout leader, PTA president, coach, Sunday School teacher and taxi driver extraordinaire. She was instrumental in the opening and operations of the Community Kitchen and the Shelter of Hope. She volunteered at King’s Daughters Medical Center and taught preschool at Ashland Child Development Center. In her final days, she ensured winter clothes were purchased for children and families had gifts for Christmas.
All services will be at First Christian Church, 1930 Winchester Ave., Ashland where she was a faithful member.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 22, and the funeral service is at noon Wednesday, Dec. 23. She will lie in state at the church from 11 a.m. until service time. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Graveside services will follow in Ashland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Organ Fund, the Community Kitchen, Shelter of Hope, Community Hospice or any favorite charity.

Ora Kazee (1938-2009)
Ora Kazee, 71, passed away Saturday evening, Dec. 19, 2009, in the Boyd County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ashland.
Ora were born May 19, 1938, in Isonville, Ky., a son of the late Jeff and Fannie Adkins Kazee. He was an active member of the Cannonsburg Fire Department for 37 years, a graduate of Fairview High School class of 1958, enjoyed working on cars or anything mechanical and sand drag racing, and a member of Local 248 pipefitters retiring in 1998 following a 36-year career.
Left behind are his loving wife of 48 years, Gertrude Sparks Kazee; a son, Mark Kazee of Ashland; a daughter, Robin Kazee of Ashland; a brother, Roger Kazee of Ashland; two sisters, Goldie Collier of Catlettsburg and Alice Williams of Flatwoods, Ky.; and granddaughter, Ava Bailey.
Also preceding him in death is a brother, Thurman Kazee.
A funeral service to honor Mr. Kazee’s life will be Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at noon at Neal Funeral Home, Center Street in Catlettsburg. Rev. Tom Jackson will offer comforting words to those in attendance. Final rest will be in Rose Hill Burial Park with full fire fighter grave rites.
A visitation for family and friends is today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to service time.
Jack E. Fosson (1925-2009)
Jack E. Fosson, age 84, of Bruin, Ky., formerly of Ashland, Ky., died Dec. 19, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.
He was born June 2, 1925, in Ashland, a son of the late W.B. and Mima Weidenheller Fosson.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, W.R. Fosson.
He was a partner in W.B. Fosson and Sons Construction General Contractors. He was a long time member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and a World War II Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Watson Fosson; a son, Randy Fosson and wife, Carol of Lexington, Ky.; daughters, Patty Jacque Fosson Abrams and husband, Bob of Paintsville, Ky., and Julia C. Fosson of Avon, Conn.; sisters, Dorothy Leedy of Thomasville, Ga., and Jo Ann Williams of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; grandchildren, Stephanie Ruth and husband, Jeff of Lexington, Robbie Abrams of Paintsville and Laurie Huddle and husband, Tommy of South Point, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Tyler Ruth and Kendall Ruth of Lexington and Tre Huddle of South Point.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009 at Rose Hill Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Susan Elkow of Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayson, Ky. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.

Keith Self (1958-2009)
Keith Self, 51, of Ashland, was lifted by angels and carried to his home in Heaven on Dec. 20, 2009, in KDMC after a courageous 20 month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Keith was born Oct. 31, 1958, to Geneva Hall Bentley in Detroit, Mich. In 1975, Keith relocated to the Boyd County area and graduated from Boyd County High School.
Keith was employed by CSX Railroad for 10 years. In 1991, he incorporated Quality First Services, Inc., a commercial janitorial service specializing in tile floor work. The business grew over the years and expanded to KY, OH & WV, attributed directly to Keith’s hard work ethic, dependability and reputation. From 1993 to 1997, Keith owned and operated 29th Street Pantry and Videos, Inc. where he enjoyed interaction with many friends old and new.
Keith is survived by his wife, Lynn Adkins Self; a son, Eric Keith Self and his fiancée, Lauren Rutt; a son by marriage, Christian Layne Wheeler, at home and a daughter, Brooke Christian Self of Ashland. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by a sister, Patricia (Ron) Warren of Warren, Mich.; a brother, Mike Bentley of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; a brother, Butch (Emily) Bentley of Hartford, Mich.; nieces, Jamie Tadros, Kimberly Bernureter, Jennifer Williams and Vernece Hollon; three nephews, Jo Vitale, Dion Bentley and Jason Bentley; three great-nieces and two great-nephews and a special friend, Gene Fuller.
Keith was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Whitni Amber Self in 2005 and brothers, Joey Lee Bentley in 1995 and Gregory Lynn Bentley in 1960.
Keith was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the Elks Lodge and coached Ashland American Little League and Ashland Babe Ruth.
Keith had a passion for sports particularly softball. He played on Mr. Gene’s softball team from 1978 until 1992 and participated in numerous tournaments throughout the state of Kentucky. He participated in the Ashland YMCA Summer and Fall Leagues, Worthington Fall League, Elks Post 350 and Russell YMCA Basketball League. Keith was also a member of several local bowling leagues. In addition to sports, Keith enjoyed horse racing and renovation properties.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood by the Rev. Ike Nicholson. Burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Christian Wheeler, Stephen Crum, Carl Williamson, Jon Hart, Jay Brooks, Tony Adkins and Dean Young.

Hershal McIntyre (1939-2009)
Hershal Eugene McIntyre, 70, of Berea, Ky., formerly of Ashland, Ky., passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 19, 2009 in Veterans Administration Medical Center in Berea.
Hershal was born Feb. 14, 1939, in Boyd County, Ky., a son of the late Charles Herbert Sr. and Thelma Clark McIntyre.
Hershal proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of Westwood Enterprise Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Hershal was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles H. McIntyre Jr. and Marvin Edgil McIntyre and two sisters, Ellen Stephens and Gloria Fields.
He is survived by three sisters, Minnie (Allen) Tomlin, Loretta Pennington and Saundra (Drexel) Blanton, all of Ashland; several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 22, 2009, by Rev. Raymond Stephens at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park.
Friends may call one hour before the service today at the funeral home. Military services will be by Kenova American Legion Post 93.
Ralph McDowell (1932-2009)
Ralph McDowell, age 77, of Ashland, Ky., died Monday morning, Dec. 21, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center.
He was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Lawrence County, Ky., a son of the late John Michell and Marie Albright McDowell.
He was retired from PPG Industries. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashland. He was former owner and proprieter of Rolf Photography in Columbus, Ohio, an accomplished musician with several churches, a pianist for the Journeyman Quartet and an artist.
Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Alta “Sally” Caldwell McDowell of Ashland; a son, Mitchell Lute (Paula) McDowell of Ashland; a daughter, Cathy Marie McDowell of South Point, Ohio; brothers, John (Nita) McDowell and Roy (Kim) McDowell, both of Ashland; a sister, Amanda (Cecil) Sloan of Louisa, Ky.; one granddaughter, Tiffany Vassar; a great-granddaughter, Destinee Rearden and a very special friend of the family, Jan Rader.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at the Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel in Ashland by the Rev. Harold Moore, the Rev. Rick Frazier and the Rev. Jim Nichols. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Jasper Wayne Miller (1923-2009)
Jasper Wayne Miller, 85, of New Boston, Ohio, a former Greenup County resident, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Ky.
He was born Dec. 21, 1923, in York, Ky., a son of the late Joseph D. Miller and Edith Madden Miller.
He was a retired employee of North American Refractories of South Shore, Ky., and a WWII Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Violet Howard Miller and Jean Bagland Miller; eight brothers, Boyd, Lloyd, Elbert, Charley, Ed, Bill, Homer and Hiram Miller; and six sisters, Sylvia Miller, Dorthula Darnell, Mettie Quillen, Eva Bailey, Flora Wolfe and a sister who died at birth.
Surviving are three sons, Steven D. Miller, Tony Miller and Gary Miller, all of Greenup, Ky., one daughter, Carol Bailey of South Shore; one brother, Jim Miller of South Shore; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore with the Rev. Norman Potter officiating. Burial will be in Miller Family Cemetery in York.

Dallas Ray Fannin (1954-2009)
Dallas Ray Fannin, 55, of South Shore, Ky., died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 4, 1954, in Elyria, Ohio, a son of the Seanitha Elberta Brown Fannin of Portsmouth, Ohio, and the late Hagar J. Fannin. He was a disabled construction worker and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Surviving are his mother, Seanitha Elberta Brown Fannin of Portsmouth; three brothers, Wendel Fannin of South Portsmouth, Ky., Hagar Fannin Jr. of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Donald Fannin of South Shore; and one sister, Debbie Lykins of South Shore.
Preceding him in death is one sister, Reginia O’Neal.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, at the Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore with Roger Madden, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery in South Shore.

Ballard Belcher (1936-2009)
Ballard Belcher, 73, of Flatwoods, Ky., went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Dec. 20, 2009, in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. He was born June 26, 1936, in Logan County, W.Va., a son of the late Ballard and Dorothy Toler Belcher Walden.
He was a retired barber and a licensed minister with the Church of the Nazarene. He was a member of the Wurtland Church of the Nazarene and a U.S. Army veteran. He also enjoyed working at the skating rink in Camden Park.
Ballard spent his last days on earth trying to bring a smile to everyone he met. He spoke to each and every individual about the condition of their soul and asked them if they were saved and offered a prayer for God to save them. He spoke of all the sad faces around him and did his best to encourage each person to smile, because of the joy and happiness that God brings us.
Left behind are Sheila Donahue Belcher, his loving wife of 33 years; a half brother, Robert Walden (Mary) of Mann, W.Va.; a half sister, Donna Ward of Binghamton, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; one very special friend, Cullie Wheeler and a loving church family. Also preceding him in death are one brother, Ernest Belcher of Malory, W.Va.; and one sister, Regina Belcher Mills of Mann.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Wurtland Church of the Nazarene on Fulton Avenue with Pastor Scott Hill and Brother James A. Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods.
Visitation will be at the church from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday.

Carole S. Crace
Carole S. Crace, daughter of Mary Cordle and the late Albert Cordle, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, in University of Kentucky Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Jamie Cross (Scott); special niece, Michelle Meeks (David); grandchildren, Zachary, Alex, Todd Bradley and Emily Cross; three brothers; a sister; and many nieces and nephews.

Curtis Ray Ferguson (1941-2009)
Curtis Ray Ferguson of Keaton Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Dec. 19 surrounded by his family. Curt was born in Sandy Hook, Ky., in 1941, the only son of Curt C. and Ivory Whitley Ferguson.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy before joining Columbia Gas Service Systems in Columbus, Ohio, in their research and development department. He was married for 41 years to the former Judy Chappell and they moved to the Keaton Beach area in Florida following his retirement in 1997.
Curt was a member of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dublin, Ohio, and the Masonic Lodge, was a Kentucky colonel, a member of Draft Board of Taylor County, and was the Keaton Beach “Santa” for several years. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and the epitome of a “do it yourself” person.
In addition to his wife, Curtis is survived by his daughter, Norma Lindsey of Tucson, Ariz.; and his grandson, Alex Bernal, a student at the University of Memphis. He is also survived by his sisters, Marilyn (Bernie) Mason of Ashland, Ky., and Marcella Howard of Troy, Ohio; a special aunt, Faye Whitley of Grayson, Ky.; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Mike Howard of Troy and two very special cousins, Keith Whitley and Randy Whitley.
Curtis chose to donate his body to Mayo Clinic for research. Burns Funeral Home in Perry, Fla. is in charge of arrangements.
A celebration of life in Curt’s honor was held at his home on Cedar Island prior to his death with Curtis in attendance among many familly members and friends.
